I assume a more complicated method would be to use a curves layer in luminosity mode and paint on a mask selection for your area of interest, Not being adept at PS, I don't know if that would be the same. Thanks.

Hi Steve, There are indeed many ways to dodge and burn in that increasing or decreasing luminosity can be achieved using many tools. What you suggest is correct though I tend to use curves to apply contrast - ie lower shadows and raise highlights. If you just did one or other using a curve that would be akin to dodging and burning.
