Smithsonian Zoo Celebrates 50 Years Of Its Giant Panda Program

- 50 years ago, China gave the United States two pandas and the gesture of goodwill inspired the Giant Panda program at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo as well as America’s love for pandas. Since then, the zoo has hosted a total of eight pandas and made major advancements in caring for the adorable bears, including laser treatment for arthritis. NBC’s Kerry Sanders reports for TODAY.

I grew up in the DC area and I remember them forever trying to get Ling Ling and Sing Sing to mate and have a baby. I had moved out to Phoenix by 2001. But, YES, I remember Ling Ling!

@@samanthab1923 I'm literally 49-and-a-half so I remember those days too. The world was smaller for sure. Back when we used BBSs or Compuserve instead of the internet. Glad to be around in good shape and I'm proud of our generation! (The at times annoying of the Boomers Generation X one!)

Today Show ~ please interview Tai Wang at the SNZ. She is the most loving, knowledgeable and devoted panda fan! She goes to the zoo several times a week and films for the whole world to see! Her videos and commentary are outstanding! You will find she is the sweetest person ever and completely in love with Qi Ji, Mei and Tian. I'm pretty sure I speak for all panda fans that have been following Qi Ji since birth, we would love for you to interview Tai. I'm 100% sure she will be there on the 50th celebration on April 16th. Thank you so much !
I agree 100%, she is the nicest & most dedicated panda fan. Xiao Qi Ji has truly been a miracle baby in every way. He has gotten us through the pandemic & made lots of people all over the world smile...and Tai is part of the reason why. Her videos are amazing & pure gold for all of us who don't live in the DC area & can't visit very often (or at all). Tai is a true gem for taking the time for all of her CZcams viewers & making outstanding videos! ❤

This zoo mistreats pandas. They have been not only starving the Meixiang panda family, but have continuously used electric shock and artificial insemination for many years on them from 2000 until now (24 times for Meixieng panda and 22 times for Tian Tian panda).
Please stop mistreat Meixiang, Tian Tian and Xiao Qiji.
