The boys and I would get together every once in a while and pass around stories of hat making. Some of us were lucky to get out alive. *lights up cigarette, looks up at sky* Some of us never really left. *sheds tear*

To the best of my knowledge, this is actually why you will find little bows in the back of a hat, to represent skull and crossbones in memory of all the hatters who have past away due to this process

I knew about this when I googled why the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland was "Mad" instead of "Silly" like how he was in the movie. Had a huge respect for the hat makers and all the craftsman in the old times since then.

I make beaver and rabbit fur felt hats, but I also restore old silk top hats from this era. Since the silk used in the hats isn't made any more you can only buy and fix old ones and a lot of people still can get sick from just fixing them up.
