He went from fit to metabolic syndrome. He was the precursor to what we see in modern day society. Fit and healthy turned into fat and diseased. Except back in those days you needed to be wealthy to kill yourself with sugar. Nowadays it is the common mans poison. Enough sugar and carbohydrates will overwhelm any system resulting in hyperinsulinemia, insulin insensitivity, obesity, hyperglycemia, and all the complications of metabolic syndrome. All of it is preventable and much of it is reversible. Oh, and one of the underappreciated facets of the resulting metabolic syndrome is the psychiatric disturbance. Courses should be taught on King Henry, but alas they keep showing him eating giant turkey legs as if that was the cause of his obesity.

One thing I noticed you did not mention, Henry's obesity can be attributed to an injury he received from a jousting incident. When he was a young man Henry was supposedly in very good shape, described as tall, well built and handsome. However, after his injury he could not be as active as he once was and his weight ballooned as a result.

There are several good BBC documentaries on the diet of the various classes in British society. Interestingly, they show that the diet of the lower classes (outside famine periods) was actually better for you than that of the highest classes. Their diets consisted of much higher levels of fiber, protein, and carbs, lower levels of salt and sugar, etc.

Certainly, with that amount of eating, Henry would hardly have needed more than two meals a day. Three meals a day is a more recent phenomenon. In his youth Henry burned off all those calories a whole lot more because he was an active man. But he couldn't do so with thrombosed legs, and he gained weight alarmingly.
