I've been there and done that many times over the years I worked for Big R. Unless the weather was foul, I actually got to where I enjoyed the challenge and seeing the job done successfully and safely. I took my time and did it right and safe, because what was the hurry since I was union and on the clock. It was a very good job.

Wow! I remember passing a truck a couple years ago and thinking, " why the hell does that tractor have two fifth wheels?!?" I had no idea it was the Jiflocks system. That's pretty cool!

I hated doing this at Big R, never failed it was raining or in the snow when I had to do it! Matter a fact I hated working at Roadway, jump seat no matter where we went. Glad I went to UPS and finished my Teamster pension out...retired after 45 yrs accident free. Thank you Lord!!!

Worked for a Ruan service center during and after diesel college. There was a really small Roadway terminal in our town, and we worked on their equipment. White/GMC trucks with air started 6v-53's, air assist steering, and Jifflox units. Loved the Screamin' Jimmies, but the rest of those trucks were garbage. 6 speed transmissions, and geared to climb a tree. I don't think most of those would do 50. Then they had some antique as heck LCF? Ford cabovers. Kind of like the old beverage trucks of the day. Those anemic bastards had 3208 Cats in them. Again, more garbage. But the union hands driving them didn't care. Smiled all the way to the bank on payday.......

To slide the 5th wheel back onto the jiff, remove all pins from 5th wheel plate then put tractor in reverse then tap the brakes ever so gently and bam there she goes, then re-insert the pins to secure the 5th wheel onto the Jiff. Just a tip from the pros...RFLOL

Buying ill conceived equipment like this is why company's fail. The delay time needed to accomplish all this by a unionized driver, or yard men in the middle of an Ohio winter no less, would destroy most trucking companies already operating at the margins to begin with.

Can you believe they actually thought this was a good idea back then? By the time you do this in the middle of the night in snow or ice it's got to be over an hour. Crazy. If you make a mistake you're in big trouble. And you should cross the chains. It's safer. And I love the driver using the grease gloves to touch everything. Funny. That perfect uniform would be full of grease by the time you get done with all of this. The guy might as well wear coveralls and dedicate 2 hours to fucking with this crazy system. It couldn't have saved money because the accidents and workman comp claims must have been very high. Why are people so short sighted, stupid and cheap?
