  • Denver Fire Department Station 1 is the final station we visited during our first (but not last) trip to Colorado. Station 1 sits directly next to the Colorado Convention Center in Downtown Denver. Locating it at the busy intersection of Colfax Avenue and Speer Boulevard. In its history, this is the third location of Station 1 which was built in the 1970s. The house is the home to Engine 1 and Tower 1, but also their Special Operations units, along with the District 2 fire chief, and serves as headquarters for the Denver Fire Department. Due to the location and the specialties this station has to offer it is one of the busiest stations within the department. Engine 1 runs on average 5,500 calls while Tower 1 runs about 3,300 calls per year. Those kinds of numbers are closer to a full station call volume rather than a single unit. Their main coverage area is District 2, meaning the downtown area of Denver, but being part of the Tech Rescue Taskforce they can be called all over the city. Neil Bunker does a great job of walking us through the stations showing us everything from the living quarters to the weight room, and the trucks. We love the fact that these guys are not your typical firefighters but also accept the training and responsibility of the Tech Rescue disciplines.
Whenever you are in the Denver area please take the time to stop by and say hello to the crews at this station. They would love to hear from you and show you around. Station 1 is a unique place in which the camera just does not seem to capture the feelings you get standing in it. It's a MUST-SEE location.
Thank you to Neil Bunker and now Chief Greg Paxley (former PIO) for allowing Heroes Next Door to film this unique and special station. You all are the true definition of Heroes Next Door.

Station 1 was built in 1975, and its 3rd or 4th iteration. Its predecessor is located at 1326 Tremont Place--roughly three blocks east of the current house--was built in 1909 and today houses the Denver Firefighters Museum. (Hopefully you had the chance to visit while you were in Denver, Mike.) Prior to that, there was the Broadway Fire Station, built at the northwest corner of Colfax and Broadway (where the Pioneer Monument Fountain now sits) in 1881, and was home to Broadway Hose Co. #6 until that volunteer organization disbanded in 1884. And before that, the first organized fire company in the Colorado Territory--Pioneer H&L Co. #1, who began service on 25 March 1866--called 1534 Lawrence St. home. Technically, that was the first "Station 1" (not only in Denver but all of Colorado), and predates Denver Fire Department proper by 15 years. During that period, six more volunteer companies were organized to protect the city, and the Lawrence St. location became known as "Central Station".
The first DFD paid crews went into service on 1 September 1881 (Happy 141st Birthday, DFD...a couple days early), manning three city-owned apparatus: Steamer 1, H&L #1 and Hose #1. Steamer 1 shared quarters with Volunteer H&L Co. #1 at Central Station, Hose #1 shared quarters with Archer Hose Co. #2 on Curtis St., and DFD H&L #1 lived the bachelor life at City Hall Station. When Broadway #6 disbanded, Steamer 1 relocated to their vacant house, followed not long after by Hose #1 moved from Archer House to Steamer 1's vacated spot at Central Station, joined by H&L #1 when Pioneer follows Broadway in disbanding to give way to the growing municipal department. When they arrive in their new home, Steamer one renames their barn, "Engine House #1".
Jump forward several decades, after Steamer 1 combines with Hose #1 to become Engine 1, and DFD H&L #1 evolves into Tower 1. Those two companies now call the present Station 1 home. So, is it the 3rd generation on the family tree because a bunch of nozzle-jockeys snagged the title early, or the 4th because real firefighters know who does all the ass-busting, back-breaking work on the job, and firefighting in Denver began with a single truck on Lawrence St.?

I remember when this house opened in 1975. I had a few of the FF's who worked there ride my RTD bus that went by there. They got to ride for free as was and still is the RTD's policy so it was a win win situation for them and they didn't have to worry about parking. They were a great bunch of guys! Always wondered what it looked like inside. Thanks for the tour!

Actually this is even more a coincident as Tower One and Engine One along with DC2 responded to my building last night for a person trapped in an elevator. One question though you mentioned the call volume on the engine and tower just wondering what the call volume per year is on the Collapse Rescue and Water Rescue? Cant wait for the videos coming up! Thanks again, and awesome video!

Thanks for the content it’s awesome seeing all the different locations around the country. But the one thing I can’t stand is to see in the apparatus bay doing training that the guys have taken out the ceiling tiles and grid to install chains from an SFRM protected beam that is 100% part of a rated assembly due to separation of occupancies. This folks is why inspectors are hated. Even within the fire house they can’t even comply.

That's a lot of disciplines to have to know in one station. I'm sure it's far from boring. As far as bunking, I'd be happy just to have a warm dry place to lay down when I had the chance. At 5500 calls a year that averages out to a call every 1.6 hours. Not ideal numbers if sleeping is your thing.

With 24 hour shifts and 48 hour shifts being the new standard in the fire service individual dorms are becoming more prevalent. The lack of privacy and ability to “get away” is almost 0 in these old stations. After running all day and hanging out with the guys all day it’s nice to have your own spot. Add overtime and swaps the allure of big bunk rooms go away. They’re a cool concept when you first start the job but they are an outdated legacy feature that is going away.
