- Today we have part two of Rick Rubin’s conversation with proto-punk icon, Iggy Pop. If you didn’t catch part one last week where Iggy talked about his early days with the Stooges and the inspiration behind some of their most seminal songs, make sure you check that out.
On today’s episode, you’ll hear Iggy talk in-depth about the years he spent working and touring with David Bowie. He also explains how James Brown inspired his legendary performance style, and then Iggy recalls the ridiculous antics that led to him bleeding on stage for the first time.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

What fascinates me the most is Iggy's memory. Here and in previous interviews I noticed that he remembers the smallest details exactly. I can listen to Iggy for hours. Would love to have more of this!
there's no one like Iggy. Great story about his first time seeing the Doors
This interview was so good! Please do those 6 more hours! Iggy is such an interesting artist. He knows a lot about a lot of things .so intelligent yet down to earth. He’s definitely someone we all could learn from. Also you can tell Rick has great respect for iggys creative process then and now. Truly an authentic interview. We need more !
Agreed. Do another 6 hours non stop!!
@@jaymann5180 Yes Sir, Jim is The One who tells the Truth, Cuz
This interview is a NEEDED part of rock history. Iggy has been such an enigmatic figure for so long, it's great to hear the backstory in his own words.
he all said it before read the iggy books. still great to hear mr p.iggy
Dear Rick and the staff at Pushkin, please make these interviews in video format. This catalogue of interviews are life-altering and so insightful. Thank you for doing what you do.
I could listen to Iggy all day! Great work!
I love that..."when it's not in your face and people have to find it , or your friend tells you about it, it has power".
Please please do another or two: We need to hear all about New Values, Soldier, Zombie Birdhouse, etc etc etc Thank you!!🙉
I've listened to several interviews with Iggy, but few with this intimacy and depth. This is probably the best of them. Please keep this series going, Rick! I can think of several artists that you've worked with that would be great to talk to.
Best is from 80 on tom snyder, and there is a great one from 81 available now. these were spiritual.
Awesome stuff! Oh Jim Morrison 😂 Shout out to Iggy! ❤️👍Please make more with him! 🙏
I love this man so much, truly one of the most inspiring artists of all time
Iggy is one of the few left that is worth listening to of the OG guard. (interview wise) Instinct is overlooked. Most of it is 😀 Also Rick Rubin is obviously some sort of advanced level wizard. Great interview 👍
"She's ready to go to California right now," made me laugh aloud.
Wow! I didn't dig the Stooges and so didn't pay any attention to anything from Iggy since then, despite him being so visible in my life as a musician and someone in the music industry. But this interview - I listened to both parts - has piqued my curiosity.
Also, what a well-spoken, articulate, obsrvant, astute and sensitive chap he is. During the first few minutes I struggled to place the face (and image) to the voice I was hearing. I could have continued listening for hours.
Thank you not only for posting this interview, but also for making it a two-parter. Had it been one LONG session I would likely have been scared off.
Mister Pop is the ideal narrator of pop history. I could listen to his stories for ever.
I could listen to Iggy for days, what a joy Thank you both!
Having grown up in SE Mchigan/ the Detroit area in the 60s and 70s, I really enjoyed this.
This is pure gold. I could listen to Iggy Pop all day, so elocuent, and you know he's lived through all the best moments of rock puk and pop from the 70's. And Rubin let him speak which is great.
p iggy= king
Iggy saw The Doors in the sixties. His memory is crystal clear, amazing stories!
@@williamdrijver4141 actually. 20 years ago all this got writen in his books so good old p iggy .is just reading from his books. it sounded sooo familiar now i know why .😁 i was like but hell i remember this too..and indeed. read the iggy books .now i love p iggy dont get me wrong..
Excellent conversation with two living legends.

Erudite man if I ever heard one.Jim's still brilliant and I hope he stays with us for a long time, healthyartistic and his big brain churning and pondering for us to report to us.Great interview but I expect it after ALL these years of creativity, brilliant artist xx
Iggy is a walking memory of 20th century legends in concert. Mentally he seems razorsharp. Amazing to listen to him! Both have great and pleasant to listen to voices.
Totally.still The St Walking Cheetah.w/-a ❤.
One of the best interviews. Thanks!
What a national treasure! Thanks for sharing!
Michigan people are cool made me get misty. I agree. I grew up in Cassopolis, and later lived in Muskegon, but have lived in Ann Arbor, Marqette, and Kalamazoo. I had a girlfriend from Harbor Springs. I am still friends with many West Michigan musicians.
“He had moves from the side of a Grecian urn”
Iggy has such an artist’s mind. He really has a way of painting pictures. Love it
IKR! I loved that turn of phrase!!
I had Russ Gibb as an english teacher in high school and I asked him if the Doors had ever played the Grande Ballroom. He said that they had auditioned for a gig but Morrison was so drunk that Russ said "No thanks".
WOW....thx for Iggy&Rick...great stuff
313ehh
This was the best interview so far, hope to hear more of Iggy
I love Iggy, he's made of Art🐻!!
Such a great interview!!! What a great guy, that Iggy, thanks Rick❣️
Everything about IGGY is fascinating, he's the ultimate rock performer
I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)!
#3 _'Original-Stooges-Fan'_ here.
My crew were the small group in our school that listened to The Stooges.
'Denied 'em thrice on the jr. high school bus.'
The kids always discussed music on the school bus. One day, we were sitting at the back of the bus. The _'runt'_ in our litter (John J.) was in the front.
Kids used to call him "Iggy" cuz he grew his hair just like him. And, he 'moved' like him too. So, the jocks were harassing him for liking Iggy. They wouldn't actually touch him cuz some guys in our group were the baddest dudes in school.
(& they knew we were watching)
So, after that, the girl sitting next to me asked me if *I* liked Iggy?
I said: "No."
Yea, it was a weak moment for me.
And, I've always regretted it since.
But, that's how it WAS back then.
Ted Nugent was the _'everyman'_ hero.
And, Iggy was a polarizing figure.
Ironic how that's completely flipped now.
*ROX ON!*
- Dave B.
Yesh i got Radiooooo. It's brilliant.
Iggy knows this is for the Archives , Great Stories in Time
The insight and inside history ..... my god .... and I love Iggy's attention to detail when he's recalling his life //// just an amazing talk
Jim Is the Man, What he says here is just hitting the Nail on the Head, ,The Ultimate , James Brown was the Man Many People Copied, Cuz
Part 2, was even more fun with these legends!
Great history here. Thank you Rick Rubin. Thank you Iggy.
Iggy nails the importance of discovering music in this case by oneself whatever the means.
"One thing about me, is that if I get hurt, if I get cold or if I'm in the rain, I'm not gonna stop.. I don't do that"
I love these conversations with rock and roll legends, hearing stories from the 60s, 70s, about Bowie, Doors etc seems just out of this world. It would be awesome to hear Mick Taylor one day or Bill Wyman maybe
Incredible personal history and the detail of emotion is the source of humanity..Just wow on that bit-he is a true hero in every sense! I have been listening to his music my complete adult life - New Values and Soldier being my triggers and Fun House the undercurrent. He does a very bad English accent..but hey..just wish he and Mick Ronson did an album..
I listen to Radioooo! Highly recommend..
"Down on the ......beach??" Could you imagine?!? Not only would of this changed the entire feel of the masterpiece that is Fun house, that would have changed the trajectory of musical history from there on out!!
Good call Iggy!!
mind u. p.iggy would have made it sound with .an i instead of. each..imagne that..
i. tch..😲
yea like his. rich beach song. ☻
Beautiful. Bless your memory Iggy.
Was Ron Ashton a great guitar player? I say hell yes. He wasn't Jimmy Page or Peter Frampton, but cue up a video of a live version of Dirt and tell me that Ron Ashton was not a GREAT guitar player.
Great conversation🤩Could you give me the link to the radio station which Rick recomanded to Iggy? That "wowowo" something. Thx!
radiooooo
Yeah, been tryin to find that.
Does anyone know what the name of the radio app Rick is referring to ? Having trouble finding it and would like to check it out … sounds really cool
So interesting. Would have welcomed a Part 3! Great questions from Rick...An obvious Stooges fan...
His opening comment about a lack of success was brilliant..about the industry hit makers...
I love Iggy pops love of Jim Morrison , I share that love
I always felt like Morrison is the precursor to Iggy’s voice and stage act
Rick, ya gotta set up cameras and record video of these interviews
Really great
Radio Garden is another great app where you can listen to radio in different countries by choosing it on a world map, I have to check out that French app now.
One of the interesting facts is the Stooges did not play that many concerts/tours. Considering they became so influential. Ive heard Homme mention.
Thanks
EAST TOWN THEATER, when did he play there?
starting in 1970 Cuz
Right on...thx.
Iggy interestingly enough did n o t talk about women..NICO for instance.
I think he did a v e r y good job with the kind of anecdotes he chose.
Also perfect video
Please again! 🐈⬛
Does anybody know whats the streaming app that Rick recommends to Iggy @ 25 minutes? Some French streaming service? Radio Wowouwouwou?
i’m interested also; tried to google it but unsure of the spelling. Have you found it yet?

Rick Rubin is the best interviewer ever. Blowhards like Howard and Marc maron could leave a shit ton hearing this.
The Clint Eastwood / "Dirty Harry" movie Iggy saw perhaps was Magnum Force.

The Idiot is timeless
Clint movie his magnum force ...Iggy.
The Englishman who said Iggy was possessed would be Lord Melvyn Bragg.
HELLGHiLLiES!!
Iggy Pop is an honorary member of the supergroup SEXAGON.
Lord Sutch?
Hi
I would love a house with lizards 🦎
Amongst the most overrated in history.
What a dum thing to say. Iggy Pop is one of the most influential artists in popular music.
