Norah doesn’t get enough credit. She literally had the highest-selling album by a female artist in the 2000s (Come Away with Me) on a flailing Jazz label and managed to cohesively meld jazz, pop, blues, easy listening, soft rock, and country influences into her distinct smoky sound. Her podcast Norah is Playing Along is great and a testament to her versatility. She’s also not just slow songs either. Her songs Happy Pills, Chasing Pirates, and Everybody Needs a Best Friend are good examples of different moods to her music.
I’ve always considered “I Can’t Make You Love Me” as one of the most beautiful and saddest songs ever recorded…I think it’s even sadder than George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today”.
Hi Michael, me - old guy from germany, I follow your clips for some time now, but I never saw you soooooo touched and "open/vulnerable" as in this clip ... I have tears in my eyes - because of your incredible choices (most of which I didn't know until today) but also because of your "feel" ... I am so grateful ... thanks a lot ... and keep on to music 👍🏼
She’s the top top. Then Tori. That’s it. Nobody else really comes close. KD Lang has her moments. If I had to listen to one voice forever, it would be Alison Krause.
I saw her in the same sized venue, on a small college campus with great acoustics, from the 4th row and it is hard to top that. I had just recently seen Joan Baez in Oxford, MS; Bonnie Raitt in Starkville and the same week, Sheryl Crow in Biloxi @ Hard Rock. I had great seats in great venues, but it’s hard to beat legends like Joan or once in a generation talent like Bonnie, but Alison Kraus blew me away, even after those excellent testimonial-level displays of crazy, God given talent, in Arkansas. I had chills and I cried. And then I cried some more… By far, the AK concert rem😢ains my all-time favorite concert. I’m lucky to have seen these icons in small venues. Literally awesome. Susan Tedesci is easily the top of my must-see list of female artists. They are all underrated, but it’s especially so for Susan. I expect it to be a life-altering, soul stirring, profound experience with depth and resonance. Who is at the top of your list?
Hell. I thought Molly would have been #1 on the list. I really like her rendition of Gentle on my mind. Her guitar playing and singing is second to none 😎
Thank you for including our hometown favs Tedeschi Trucks! You have my other picks on the list as well with Bonnie Raitt, Allison Kraus and Lady Gaga. Big omission - Ann and Nancy Wilson. And Michael if you haven’t seen Grace Potter recently, you need to see that girl. She is a force of nature and puts on an amazing show. To honor my favorite who has passed- Sharon Jones. She too was a force of nature.
We are almost in sync Michael. My one song from one woman would be Susan but the song would be “I Pity the Fool.” That song showcases her vocals, guitar, and ability to riff. I have gone to see them play for the past 3 years. They are AMAZING!!!!!!
Rhiannon Giddens should be on this list. Top Six...top seven, top eight...no need to remove any of the other artists from this list. There's plenty of room for all of these incredibly talented musicians. Love Susan, she's a force of nature and TTB is so fantastic,
Music is what feelings sound like. These women have what it takes to let the deepest of feelings come out. Excellent list, Michael and I 100% agree with your picks. I would add Sara Bareilles to my list.
Great list! Alison Krauss is my second favorite female artist of all time. If I had a Time Machine I’d want to see Karen Carpenter (My all time favorite) sing “Superstar” while playing drums with her brother Richard. Just haunting and beautiful!
Outstanding list. I can't argue with any of the choices. Thank you in particular for including Susan Tedeschi. When you say that's who you'd see tomorrow - I had the joy of seeing her (and the TTB) live this year. What a hidden (from many people) gem, and YES great guitar skills. I would have chosen her playing Do I Look Worried. What all these amazing women have in common is not just great singing ability, but deep musicianship and instrumental talent. Music is so much an organic part of who they are - not just something they do. It's a soulful experience to listen to them. GaGa sang it best - I was born this way.
you should check out St. Vincent (Annie Clark) -- from songwriting & creativity to guitar skill to performance presence she's up there with aliens like Prince and I've rarely been as captivated by a live performance
Interesting list based on the title. Bit more nostalgic than really 'in' the game, but I get it... Kacey Musgraves, Sarah Jarosz, Sierra Ferrell, Sierra Hull feel like worthy considerations. The talented ladies are aplenty tho!
I think I'd go see Sara Bareilles perform Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, or Lizzy McAlpine doing her song doomsday. For a band, I'd also go for Tedeschi-Trucks, but Anyhow. Edit: or maybe Paramore doing All I Wanted…
fantastic performer/writer/singer....she put a wonderful piece of music on youtube called Life According To Raechel (Live At Sonic Ranch Big Blue)...this was about her grandmother...absolutely gorgeous....great shout out.
I saw Alison Krauss and Robert Plant in 2022 and Nora Jones in 2017. Absolute class acts and phenomenal talents. I agree that we have to see great talent while we can. As someone who missed the opportunity to see Chris Cornell and a few others, I wish I would’ve made it to the show.
I feel completely blessed to be able to see Bonnie, Susan, and another woman I’d put on this list, Rachael Price and Lake Street Dive, all this summer. Seeing LSD at Red Rocks in July is a bucket list venue for me. Great content as always.
I got to see Susan Tedeschi open for John Lee Hooker. At the time she was backed by Double Trouble. It must have been nearly 20 years ago, and I still get goosebumps when I remember it. Great talent.
Your picks are ALL spot on! I love each and every one of those amazing female artists. So fortunate to have been at Tedeschi Trucks' premiere concert in NYC at MSG in 2023 and will see them again this year in August in CT where I live. Their band is insanely great and Derek's guitar virtuosity is mind-blowing. I'm a singer with similar Bonnie/Susan vocal range and could only hope to be half as good.
Nice list. Allison Kraus is straight fire. Bonnie Raitt is beyond excellent. Not on list, but still worhty. Pink is great. And believe it or not, Kelly Clarkson can sing anything and sing it phenomenally.
Britney Howard, over my head. Would be my one artist one song but I agree with your list and have seen them all live. Suzan lots of times both prior to her touring with her husband and after.
More than just one of your choices moved me to goosebumps. You know a piece of music strikes home when that occurs. I feel that you could have added one more to your list in Clare Lynch give her a listen. I enjoy the channel Michael. Keep up the good work.
You're probably too young to know/appreciate Suzanne Vega. Saw first live in 1987. Then last year she agreed to let me photograph her at a sound check on her world tour. Took her portrait in the same seat I first sat in when I saw her live in '87!
I started to cry when you said Bonnie Raitt. I saw her for free at Bumbershoot in Seattle on a Friday afternoon. She was acoustic with Freebo her bass player. She was spectacular then singing Midway and Angel from Montgomery . I was lifted to the heavens. She just as good today. ❤
Amazing list. I would happily go see any of these fantastic artist anytime. The only one that you don't have on your list and she would be the first one I would go see right now if I could is Sara Bareilles - Gravity. I feel her voice cutting right through my soul when she sings that song. That's my favorite. Thanks for sharing

Absolutely Alison and Bonnie! I would add Wynonna Judd who is Patsy Cline and Elvis 's baby clone. Dolly Parton who is a prolific singer songwriter whose songs have been covered by other great singers like Whitney Houston.
Great list. Tori, Tori, Tori! She changed me and my teenage boy perspective in 1992. I feel so grateful to have seen her during her Under the Pink tour and again supporting Boys for Pele. She is an absolute master at her art.
Great choices. I've been so fortunate to see Susan and band several times in the last couple years. I'm going to see them as often as I possibly can. The whole band experience is just over the top great.
I stumbled on this video and just love how much you love music! Real music. I so enjoyed watching your face which reflects your soul and love of true musicians. Thank you for sharing.
I agree. I have seen Alicia, Tori, Norah, Allison, Lady Gaga and Tedeschi Trucks playing “Until You Remember”. Bonnie has eluded me, I wish to correct that. I have also seen Aretha Franklin, Neko Case, Aoife O’Donovan, First Aid Kit, Regina Spektor, Alanis Morissette, Lauren Hill, Alabama Shakes and Cyndi Lauper to name a few. Great list, love the ladies of song!
Outstanding job on picking the top 7. If I could see Bonnie Raitt sing "Angel from Montgomery" in person, that would just about complete my bucket list.....check out Sierra Hull if you have the chance. She's an accomplished mandolin player and has a sweet voice that will remind you a lot of Alison Krauss.
Michael...I was gonna call you out and say how dare you not place Alison in first place! Then I saw Bonnie there and thought, yeah, you nailed it. I remember being about 14 years old and riding in the back of my parents Mercury Cougar. Playing in it's cassette radio was Bonnie's Luck of the Draw. Riding around in that beautiful car and hearing that beautiful lady's voice coming from the rear speakers was life changing. I remember just staring out the window and getting fully immersed in her voice. I love the entire album, getting jazzed up on some of her songs and almost breaking down with tears, especially when listening to I Can't Make You Love Me. Michael, I also noticed you getting teary eyed here in the video. I get it man...just an incredibly beautiful and heartbreaking song at the same time. Bonnie's story telling is like no other and gut wrenching at times, particularly when she says, "I close my eyes, then I won't see, the love you don't feel, when your holding me", it just tears me up every time. This is why we all love her. Thank you for doing this video, couldn't agree more with your choices.
No doubt your list is exceptional, but I have 3 Aussie names for you. Delta Goodrem, Missy Higgins, Vanessa Amorosi. Trust me, they will blow you away. We've got plenty more, but they are my 3 picks. I saw Savage Garden in 2001, with Vanessa as support. WOW! I would have been happy if the whole concert was her. Enjoy
Great picks Michael. It's so hard to do a top 5 because there are so many women with incredible vocal and instrumental skills. Another to mention in the future is Sierra Hull and her version of "Black Muddy River" or her incredible instrumental work with Bela Fleck. The voice of an angel, the chops of a virtuoso, and the smile of your best friend.
I love Sierra Hull too. Encountered her on one of Leland Sklar’s videos from when Lee was on tour with Lyle Lovett and Sierra Hull opened some of the shows. I've come across some excellent music watching Leland play tracks from songs he played bass on.
I was in a Virgin Records store in Vancouver BC in 2002, and I heard something playing over the store’s PA that stopped me in my tracks: Alison Krauss & Union Station Live. So good…I’ve been a big fan ever since.
I would have loved to see Whitney Houston sing the National Anthem. When I heard her sing it when I was a Marine over in Desert Storm. I stood in my uniform and cried tears of joy. In my humble opinion, this was her crown jewel. On that day, her voice was perfect for this occasion: Respectfully yours, Steven Olson SSgt USMC
Great video, thanks Michael. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing AK in a fund raising event for a Montessori school in Tn maybe 15 years ago. 300+/- people. Full band (Union Station) and they never missed a single note, not one. Best night of music ever.
Love all your picks, Alison Kraus and Susan Tedeschi especially. So fine, so emotionally driven, you can’t help but feel moved with their delivery and the quality of musicians they choose to accompany them is beyond excellent! Great Video, thanks
First of all, great video, thank you. Every time I hear that Bonnie Rait song the volume is cranked and the chills follow shortly therafter. Bruce Hornsby’s piano only makes the song that much better. Sheryl Crow is my night on the town; immensely talented and I love her voice.
This is my first time watching you and it was so darn great! completely agree with your picks and would love to hear your opinions on Beth Hart, Brandi Carlile, Lucinda Williams, and especially Patti Griffen- as others have mentioned. Really glad I discovered you!
Saw her back in the 90s when she was first starting out before she went on to tour with Joe Bonnamassa singing classics but Beth Hart has one of the purest voices ever and the song I would love to hear live again is Mama. Also would love to see Joss Stone sing anything live.😊
Hi Michael I can’t argue with any of your picks. It’s your soul being spoken to and transported. Thanks for sharing your favorites. And thanks for asking us to open up a little crack and share with you and with each other. For me it has to be Patty Griffin. It could be so many songs but I’m gonna go with “Shine a Different Way”.
Please do a breakdown of the artist ST VINCENT. Songs "Flea", '"Down and Out Downtown", and-or "Rattlesnake". She's pretty awesome! Many influences blend in her sounds like prog, new wave, 70's funk, bowie, industrial, grunge, art pop. She even co-wrote an album with David Byrne.
I love your list and I love all the comments. Will open my ears to some I have not heard. The one that would make me crumble: Joni Mitchell singing Both Sides Now. I’d probably pick young, soprano Joni although the later, deeper voiced, jazzy arrangements are classic too. Just such an important song.
Thank you, I just made it to the end, and I had my fingers crossed you had Susan Tedeshi. And I cried with Alison Krauss because she is my all time favorite female singer. Alison Krauss and Tony Rice had the most influence over my musical knowledge than any other artists! Great list. I have seen Alison probably 4 times and Tedeshi and Trucks last year!
Great list! And totally agree about Alison and Bonnie. Glad to see Susan get some love. As others have said, Molly Tuttle, St. Vincent, H.E.R., Joni Mitchell, Nancy & Ann Wilson, Grace Potter, Sara Barellies, are all worthy of some love
Righteous selections sir. And an "amen" on the words you spoke regarding Susan Tedeschi. Three of those should get together to do a back to back series of sets. I'd pay good money for that night out. Allison is revered in the country/bluegrass world, but way underrated everywhere else.
Words cannot express how much I adored this video. All exceptional artists. Tori and Gaga are in my top 5 artists of all time. One of my favourite videos I’ve ever seen is you discovering Tori Amos. I’ve returned to that video more than once. As for your question…honestly, it’s too stressful for me to pick one. 😅 Once, I would have said Winter by Tori Amos with my mom, but that happened….twice. 😍 I’d love to have seen Tori perform Cooling WITH THE BRAMBLES BRIDGE (she mostly omits it 😖) back in the 90s. Wow, that would be amazing. I also would have loved to have seen Laura Nyro. My parents got to see her. She is so so underrated. I’d pick a song from Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. Lady Gaga for sure and…hmmm…maybe Dope or Remember Us This Way. Those ones just came to my head and they’re not budging. See? Too stressful to pick just one. Thank you for this beautiful video! ❤❤❤
If you could see one girl sing one song tomorrow, who would it be? For me, it's got to be Susan.
I wanna see Lana Del Rey ngl
Sierra Ferrell
Margo Timmins
Aimer (Japan is the best ;)))
I'm with you on this one!
Patti Griffin. Extraordinary singer, songwriter, and musician. Her performances and songs can wreck and redeem you.
Norah doesn’t get enough credit. Michael it’s the joy in your eyes while listening to these amazing artists that also brings joy to your viewers on your channel thanks!

Alicia Keys 0:44 Tori Amos 2:28
Nora Jones 3:56 Alison Krauss 6:02
Bonnie Raitt 8:27 Lady Gaga 11:20

My fave… plus she can be hilariously funny in between songs and joking around with the members of Union Station.

My humble opinion? It's like comparing whiskey to wine. A matter of taste and their styles are so different. Why does one have to beat the other?
Here's some other female singers you should check out:
1. Shelby Lynne
2. Allison Moorer
3. Diane Reeves
4. Catherine Russell
5. Beth Hart
6. Lizz Wright
7. Mandy Barnett
8. Kandace Springs
9. Cecile McLorin Salvant
10. Jazzmeia Horn
Sierra Hull quickly became my fav bluegrass player. What a talent..:)
On that day, her voice was perfect for this occasion:
Respectfully yours,

I kept trying to put Whitney in there too, but she's not a musician. I'm not sure about her song writing either...what a voice though!
Thank you for your service sir!
I love all your picks, btw!! All favorites!!
Carole King gotta be in there. Carly Simon is pretty awesome playing and singing too.
Carly Simon. Nice acoustic performance from VH1 Studios 1995.
You’ve got excellent musical taste…I agree with all your top picks!
This is my first time watching you and it was so darn great! completely agree with your picks and would love to hear your opinions on Beth Hart, Brandi Carlile, Lucinda Williams, and especially Patti Griffen- as others have mentioned. Really glad I discovered you!
That was a great list. I've been lucky to see all of those ladies perform live many times.
Rachael Price and Molly Tuttle should be on this list
Price is too much of a yarler for me. Tuttle rules.
That guy standing on Allison’s left over there is Dan Timinski. Probably one of the best Bluegrass pickers in Nashville and that’s saying something.
And of course, Jerry Douglas on Dobro the complete Legend
Lucinda Williams. Patty Griffin.
Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa singing I’d Rather Go Blind at their Amsterdam concert.
Saw her back in the 90s when she was first starting out before she went on to tour with Joe Bonnamassa singing classics but Beth Hart has one of the purest voices ever and the song I would love to hear live again is Mama. Also would love to see Joss Stone sing anything live.😊
Great list!
Hi Michael
I can’t argue with any of your picks.
Solid list,MP! Lzzy Hale and Amy Lee are among my favorites!
Aurora - All of her songs but Black Water Lillies is great❤
Great list that I would also include Brandi Carlisle and Beth Hart.
Great list! And totally agree about Alison and Bonnie. Glad to see Susan get some love. As others have said, Molly Tuttle, St. Vincent, H.E.R., Joni Mitchell, Nancy & Ann Wilson, Grace Potter, Sara Barellies, are all worthy of some love
and Tedeschi Trucks Band and Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway are two of the best touring bands out there
Norah always sings right to my soul. And Alicia - so powerful. Great list
Righteous selections sir. And an "amen" on the words you spoke regarding Susan Tedeschi. Three of those should get together to do a back to back series of sets. I'd pay good money for that night out. Allison is revered in the country/bluegrass world, but way underrated everywhere else.
Johnette napolitanno with concrete blonde singing make me cry
Oh god yes. Best voice ever.
And super underrated
Gotta add The Warning to the list. Three women, amazing on their instruments, amazing voices, even better live than in the studio.
