- Isaac Albéniz's magnum opus "Iberia" played by the magnificent Spanish pianist Rosa Sabater (1929-1983), who died tragically in an airplane crash. Like Alicia de Larrocha, she studied with the great Spanish pedagogue Frank Marshall (1883-1959).
Recorded in 1967.

Such a beautiful performance. Reminds me of the playing of Alicia de Larrocha. I love Albéniz!
Both studied with the pianist and pedagogue, Frank Marshall (1883-1959), disciple of Granados and continuator of his piano school.
This is it. She is the one and only. The best Albéniz I have ever heard. Especially Jerez, so different and refined compared to the rushed interpretations of this piece.

What a find!!! I did not know any one other than Alicia de Larrocha played the entire set. Having listened to her famous recording of this piece literally 100's of times (without getting tired of it) , I am so thrilled to hear Rosa shed a new, a different, a brilliant light on these amazing pieces. What a treasure!
Muchisimas gracias a pianopera por recordar a mi madre, Rosa Sabater.
+rosa oliveras sabater: I didn't know she had children! You are very welcome, your mother was a great pianist.
Thank you. i'm so glad being in contact with you! Yes i'm her unic daughter.
Enhorabuena.
Impressive performance, one of the best piano players of 20th century
Remarkable touch, tone, phrasing, and depth. What a superb pianist and poet!
Stupendo. Grazie. ❤ bravissima la pianista, che non conoscevo.
This is, without doubt, a complete treasure, by a truly gifted pianist!
I agree
Really superb…perhaps the prevailing wisdom has been that Marshall's other, more famous student Alicia de Larrocha "owned" this great work, but as wonderful as all her recordings of Iberia are, sometimes her touch could occasionally be on the heavy side, I think. But there is no "heaviness" here - just colourful, brilliant playing, with a lot of subtlety - for sure the music dances! Makes me sad she died in that plane crash before her career had really taken off…but at least we have these great recordings.
It is remarkable to think how many such undiscovered gems are still out there. Having worked on the 1st book for a while I thought I'd listened to most of the "standard" recordings of it, but this one is truly phenomenal!
Rosa Sabater was an outstanding, brilliant pianist, and her playing is overwhelming!! Thanks for sharing it!
Magnificent treasure!! Two of my teachers were close to her and I always heard about her artistry and, of course, about her untimely, tragic death. Never heard a recording of her though... She's such a beautiful artist! Thank you so much pianopera for sharing this treasure with us!!!!!!
Who are your teachers Juan Pablo?

What a beautiful artist that I just happened to come across when reading about the tragic plane crash in Spain.
I have always loved listening to the piano being played by great pianist and she is one of the best I've ever heard.
One of the most memorable performances I ever heard in my life was Rosa playing the Schumann Concerto in 1974(?) in the Carlos V Palace in the Alhambra. It was so moving, and so "right".
Thanks for this upload! Rosa Sabater's Iberia hasn't yet received half the recognition it deserves! Her touch, timings and energy are very special. My favorite is El Polo, nobody can play it like that. Thanks!
+Alex Alguacil You're welcome. I agree, it really should be reissued! It seems both LP and CD are difficult to get at the moment.
+pianopera In addition to being a fabulous recording, you used a beautiful picture of her for El Polo.
pues ella no estaba nada contenta de esa grabacion!!!
+rosa oliveras sabater She must have been a very self-critical person!
Gracias Rosa Sabater.
I very much enjoyed the three movements so far heard - there seems to be a strong sense of character and atmosphere. No doubt I'll be back for more!
Very nice playing, the best Iberia for me, so far!!!
haha I loved the addendum of 'so far'! You are an optimist! :)
:) I'm quite greedy for good performances!
You should listen to Alicia de Larrocha.
Superb
Ti amo Rosa
An unsung heroine of the piano. Remarkable playing.
What a great talent 🏆 I guess God loved Sabater more and took Sabater 1983. God's speed to your memory 💕
Sounds great!
Superb...
Extraordinaria!!!!
Interpretively, this i very similar to Adl, but to quibble a bit, Adl had better fingers in this finger-busting music...but I remember AdL dedicating a performance of the Schuman concerto with the NSO in Washington, DC to Rosa Sabater after her death in a plane crash....I attended this performance and heard it broadcast over the radio...
Exquisite!
Extraordinaria artista.
Incredible .. magic !
I love Alicia but this is definitely a more orchestral and colorful playing of this suite! ❤️💙💛💜
Two great pianists like Rosa Sabater and Alicia de Larrocha who where pupils of the same teacher.
We are all spoilt for choice with Esteban Sanchez, Rosa Sabater and Alicia in Albeniz's great piano work. Arrau and Loriod also have something personal to offer in the recordings they made.
Most certainly!! Arraus version is absolutely stunning aswell! He's corpus christus is breathtaking and technical on a completely different level. And that amazing sound he produces!!!
Thank you for this treasure! Has this been transferred to CD yet?

I came to hear another take on El Albaicin. It had some very nice moments, but it was kind of a mess. I do understand this was before digital editing, though, and it was probably done in one take.
