Composer: Isaac Albéniz
Artists: Giuseppe Feola (guitar)
Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909), along with de Falla and Granados, is considered to be not only one of Spain’s leading composers, but one of the founding fathers of modern Spanish music. He began his musical career as a virtuoso pianist, producing a concerto that shows the influence of Liszt, and many short brilliant display pieces. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and looked set to become a pianist composer in the central European tradition - until he met and studied with Felipe Pedrell (1841-1922) who awakened in him an interest in traditional Spanish music. Albeniz combined his mastery of classical form gained from his studies in Germany with the colour and honest simplicity of folk music to create his unique form of what can be considered very high quality salon music for guitar.
The two works on this CD consist in their original form of eight and five movements respectively of characteristic, picturesque miniatures of high skill and great charm. It has become the norm for guitarists to create their own ‘favourite’ selection from such suites to form their own arrangement, which is what Giuseppe Feola has done.

Nice collection and brilliant interpretation!!! Just a comment though -- the collection title "Albeniz: Guitar Works" is not accurate as Albeniz never wrote music for the guitar. All the beautiful Albeniz music we hear on the guitar were transcriptions from the original works written for the piano

Yes, but his music is kept alive by the classical guitarists. Pianists, sadly, do not play these works anymore.
It is normal practice nowadays to include in the title the instrument which performs the transcription. It does not make sense to print on the concert programmes "Music for piano" if you play guitar. Thus, Vivaldi's RV93 lute concert for lute and strings is promoted as Concert for Guitar and strings. Same applies for all transcripted works. You cannot name an instrument that will never be played.

Albéniz never wrote a single note for the guitar. You should change the title. His piano music is adapted, and sounds so well, that seems composed for the six strings... Anyway, awesome music. Best regards from Spain.

Nothing in the title implies Albeniz composed these works for the guitar.
On the other hand, Albeniz could have written a note in his diary stating that "I give permission to Andres Segovia to interpret my works to guitar".

I can't help admiring that some arrangements are 2 guitars, while others are almost for one. But guitar-duo is such a wonderful ensemble, with so many expressive possibilities.
I may be wrong, maybe some of the passages I consider duet really are played by Giuseppe Feola soli.

El fue pianista no guitarrista sin embargo guitarristas como Miguel Llobet hizo varias transcripciones de piezas de Albeniz a la guitarra las cuales lo impresionaron una vez que Llobet toco un par de obras para Él y Albeniz le dijo que sonaban mejor en este maravilloso instrumento; la guitarra.
