About this Album:
This new recording presents the complete guitar works of Llobet, who himself was a virtuoso on his instrument, as shown in the complex and innovative writing. Barcelona-born Miguel Llobet once played for the Spanish royal family in the early 20th century. Credited with beginning the notion of a touring classical guitarist, Llobet travelled throughout Europe and beyond, briefly settling in both Paris and Buenos Aires. He later returned to Barcelona, unable to distance himself from his birthplace despite the grip of the civil war in which the city found itself.
This collection brings together Llobet’s complete works for guitar, beginning with Leonesa and his popular arrangements of 13 Catalan folk songs. These arrangements, each of a varying character, wring a different emotion from the guitar, from the sprightly L’Hereu Riera and lilting El Noi de la Mare to the flourishes of Cançó de Lladre and the mournful El Testament d’Amelia. The Variations on a Theme of Sor, based on Fernando Sor’s B minor study, contrast a haunting melody with complex articulation. Also featured on the disc are Llobet’s 5 Preludes, the Argentinian Folk Songs, Etudes, the witty and bright Scherzo-Waltz, and the composer’s debut composition Romance, among others.

LLOBET!!!! The guy was genius!
I studied several of these pieces with Maestro Jose Rey DeLatore at the Music and Arts Institute In San Francisco in the late '60s and still love them today. He was one of Miguel's last students.
I used to call him during His last days, He was living in pain with advanced Arthritis here in San Jose, California way back, and then PASSED AWAY. Maestro smoked a lot, He gave concerts locally here in Silicon Valley in the mid 1970s AND was teaching / coaching Classical Guitar students till He passed ON. RIP.

,I remember you John Whitted! I studied with Rey de la Torre also, when he was teaching at Berkeley. I also studied with Byron Pang, who taught guitar at your guitar shop in Los Gatos. Rey was a wonderfull teacher. I remember taking a master class from him at your shop around 1972. Small world
What a genius... The soft but elegant approach throughout the music. Almost gives a slight sense of floating or time ceasing. Absolutely, beautiful ❤️ the stare of Llobet should tell you he has so much musical knowledge he's balancing his knowledge with his hand in elegance. Abstract thought. So many desintized people overlooking the cultural, spiritual significance of this great guitarist and composer.

1. "Lo Fill del Rei", a Beautiful melody, reminds me of my Mother singing Lullaby's for my younger siblings when they were babies.

No conocia à ese guitarrista llobet no lo habia escuchado antes es magnifico
El guitarrista es Giulio Tampalini y está interpretando música del guitarrista-compositor Miguel Llobet, quien fuera el alumno más destacado de Francisco Tárrega a finales del siglo XIX. Aquí en youtube hay grabaciones originales de Llobet. Indudablemente ha sido de los grandes intérpretes de la guitarra.

The Variations on a theme of Sor are completing Sors 3 Foliavariations (obviously written for students) and its great that Llobet did so.
However the Folia is not by Sor. I am surprised that Llobet didn't write more!!!
Yes, it seems the theme predates Sor historically, with obscure origin.
