Never thought I'd see the day! Man on a bicycle actually buys a car, guess that proves old myths can die hard. This video had me chuckling, especially the whole back and forth about the Polo. That thing looks like a steal in such good condition, can't wait to see how much it goes for. Also really digging the idea of in-depth car reviews next week! As someone looking to buy a cheap first car, learning the common faults to look out for would be a massive help. Plus, a bit more workshop content showing what's going on underneath would be fantastic. Thanks for all the useful info and entertaining commentary, keep it up!

I worked with a guy once a good few yrs ago. Cycled into a main nissian dealer. Wanted a new full spec primera at the time. Alloys, sunroof, boot spoiler. The works. Sales man asked how u going to pay for it. Old biscuit tin on the bike carrier, full of cash.

That model Viva is a replacement for the Spark. At the time GM withdrew Chevrolet from the UK market they launched the Spark replacement in Europe. Realising they hadn't got a car in the city car level they brought it into the UK under the Viva name. I think they went with Viva to cash in nostalgia like the 500, MINI and Beetle - it crashed and burned in my opinion because the name for most was associated with a crappy rotbox their granddad had
Ahah. As the owner of a 2011 plate Qashqai, I can confirm my bike fits in the back of it. Rock solid car actually, had it for 10yrs, 150K (diesel) on the clock.
Love your show and your honesty and have told a chap at work who is looking for his first car to watch this and see if he likes anything. We are in Devon so bit of a trek. I would add that somewhere in Weston super Mare there will be a dealer watching this and saying he had a bloke on an knackered mountain bike come in and ask him to dig out an A3 Sportline TDI on an 18 plate from the very back of his lot, drove it and bought it for cash. That was me on a my brother in laws bike. We had just moved back to the UK from America and needed a car ASAP. He never said a word about breaking any golden rule.

I went out on my bike last week cycled 20 miles and came back with a Vw T6.1 camper £65 k lighter oh and I did use the vehicle score for info 😉

We used to say 'man on motorbike, never buys a car' when I worked at Audi, would ride in like the Lone Ranger, dismount, take off gear and stalk the forecourt, then walk in the showroom hoping for that magical free coffee offer from the pretty reception girls! Once warm, would foxtrott Oscar! 'Tonto's off we would say....

Gave car to my Sister due to her car not meeting ULEZ. I would then meet clients on a bicycle who would sometimes scowl or look at me funny considering the value of goods I had for sale. Haha. Never judge a book by its cover.

I cannot imagine company car drivers watching this or even those walking into a dealership and ordering a car that will be delivered in 10 months time at a greater cost than they ever imagined. Plus the fuel, ferry and accommodation of course. Hi Paul. I'm also watching from Ireland. Car prices here are a joke and vrt is also a real joy-killer. I've looked at cars from UK and N.Ireland. so much higher spec and beautiful cars, until you check the vrt. Even the sterling difference isn't the worst thing. VRT is purely a protectionist practice to keep the SIMI happy. 😢

I'm a Golden rule #1 but went elsewhere & DID buy a car as i sold my old one wanting the right one. Went to a Toyota dealer as i saw on their website the right one for me so i visited & waited around outside,no one came so went inside to inform the information lady....waited some more time then left! 😂 Purchased a car elsewhere from a smaller independent dealer instead with CASH & got £200 off the price (needed tyres) with FTSH & 1yr MOT....saved over £500 rather than buying from main dealer. Got same model,miles (only v.slightly higher),engine & trans with £500 staying in my pocket! That was 2 years ago with ZERO issues to date. Well happy.
lucky you, but the main dealer usually offers 12 months warranty which is worth it sometimes (not in your case of course).
I’ve never had a Toyota with warranty lol Toyotas don’t need warranty regular services. If I’m honest I have a Corolla and a Aygo neglect them both due to working away only thing I had go on it was altenator belt

The Two Garage Owners I Know, Would Strongly Disagree About The VW Polo Being Better Quality. All German Cars Were Once, But Now They Are Money Pits As Soon As Anything Goes Wrong.
a lot of the newer models I agree but this is a old vw remember and in my experience the 1.4 was reliable

Agreed. VAG are cheap once parts tired. And chains stretch. And actuators locks. I could go on. Better than French but only by 10% these days.
I agree, VW aint worth it & i've been in the trade for many years & knew people who owned them.
First time I bought a 2001 vw. Never had to fork out so muchfor a 2nd hand car than this vw... Problem after problem with it... Had Vauxhalls. Renault. Saabs. Fords...

Once took our beagle to Marshalls in Leicester to see if he would be alright in boot? Everything ok bought car.
We've had Vauxhalls, Toyotas and VWs in our family. The Vauxhalls and Toyotas soldier on reliably for 150k before we upgrade them. Surprisingly the Vauxhalls tend to be slighlty more bulletproof that the Toyotas. Everything gets oil and filter changes every 6k. The VWs usually start to give problems at half that. So we now have a Skoda as well, which is meant to be VW based....but seems to be very reliable. I cant figure out how Skoda can make basically the same car but it's better.
I was on my way to buy that blue toyota on Thursday i checked the page before i set off gutted Deposit taken 😢

Back in 2003 I put a 5k deposit on a 360 spider with Ferrari in St Albans . My pal and I flew down to pick it up , and I gave the salesman my switch card for the balance .
The first attempt was declined just after a girl came in and opened the key safe . My mate said “ better memorise that code “ :) The second attempt was declined, and Jim said to the salesman “Any Skoda dealer here ? We might need a cheap runner to get home “ !
By this time the guy had beads of sweat on his forehead ! Eventually got on to my bank manager who authorised it …..changed days indeed 😡

I was golden rule no 1. Went into Vw dealer and got treated badly by sales man. Went back later on in the month with my new car that brought from elsewhere and complained to the manager about my treatment and showed proof I was a serious buyer. Anyway like you said had me not been awful to me then I would not of gone back and complained

In 2003 i walked into a seat dealership with 9k cash in a carrier bag with my brother to buy a seat ibiza 1.2 for our mum the dealer called the old bill lol! trying to do something nice caused chaos!!

In the days when Britain had police stations and bombs were a thing my brother received a parcel in the post that he wasn't expecting. God only knows why, but he took it to the police station and queued for some time; in the meantime the queue behind him extended way out into the street. When he got to the counter he explained the reason for his visit while depositing the parcel on the counter. 'Right, everyone out' said plod and he evacuated the premises. After a couple of hours the parcel was found to contain an ornament sent from a relation living overseas.
any way two days later when we both proved the cash had come from our savings accounts ! we bought mum he new seat Ibiza 1.2 3 cylinder nitemare! !

I had a w reg polo 1.9 diesel when I let her go she had 185000 on the clock and she had never missed a beat and she's still going strong with my friends daughter and now has over 200k on the clock
I had an Astra tourer just like that , Black,1.6, petrol 14 plate. I have to be honest it was a bad car. Although the interior and general finish was nice it was awful. I Owned it from 6 months old 12000 miles. Added another 106000 miles in 3.5 years and the oil cooler went. Got through 3 coil packs ( pretty typical)and gearbox leaked oil out the top if you drove at or over 70. Got it repaired but it carried on leaking coolant and gearbox oil. Part exed it for a Diesel 17 plate Seat Leon. Notice on dvla the Astra was mot’d after I sold it and then scrapped 6 months later. It was really sluggish too.
Hopefully that one is better tho. Looks like it hasn’t come straight from Sixt rental so hopefully it’s better than mine was.

FIAT always made tough cars ( as do Renault ) - put it this way a choice between a 1.2 Punto - a 1.2 Clio - a 1.2 Corsa the Vauxhall is out of the race before the starters gun goes BANG !

Gone are the days when i got a 7 year old Alfa 156 for £1,500 at auction. 2009 i think. With 60,000 miles, full leather and mint condition. Prices for really old cars insane these days.
VW Polos are ridiculously overpriced , my local dealer is selling one from 2009 for £2800 , I will say though avoid the Golfs of the same generation from 2004 to 2010 as they rust bad and have gearbox issues.
The 1.6 tdi golf's/polo's are also well known for injector issues...

Hiya Lee, I was watching this video and it was making my eyes go funny, could be me, but for example at 6:10 onwards you move the camera back and forth a bit which throws the focus out, please could you try to hold it a bit steadier? I haven't noticed this with your videos before, thought you will appreciate the feedback.

Old man walks into a posh showroom wearing fatigues a rucksack and unkempt beard got told he wasn't getting a free drink and a warm up and was told to leave , I walked to the next dealer who made me feel welcome and was very informative and friendly made a £20k cash sale.
I had similar issues as a younger man rolling up on the forecourt on a motorcycle and being totally ignored as the salesman was too busy trying to sell a car to family man who hadn't two pennies to rub together 🤣

lol, I probably wouldn’t go and see a car on my bike but have passed dealers and stopped for a nosey if I have seen something I like when passing.

it’s mine we did a video on it last year when I bought it, it’s been tucked away until recently but I am about to have it repainted and will do a video on it next month all being well of the resto
