If you do not want to keep the leftover solution used for the acid wash, then you need to truly neutralize it before dumping it down your drain. You first need to sprinkle baking soda in it and stir. The solution should begin to bubble and this is good because it is chemically neutralizing the acid instead of just diluting it like when you rinse. Keep sprinkling the baking soda until it stops bubbling And then pour it down the drain with some running water for a couple minutes. Doing this is standard procedure in a lab and will protect the pipes in your home from damage.
Jacob Beal or you can just dilute the shit out of it. Draino is a stronger acid solution than this solution when diluted. Might just clean out your pipes.
@@beandipnchips4502 Draino is a basic
Great advice, also stirring is important
Lol there goes my 2 cents
that's the reason I don't want to do it. Way too much trouble and a lot of people won't do anything but dump it down the drain.
If you trace the blade where it meets the scales with a pencil before taking apart you will have a visible line for the nail polish. Just remove the line before dipping.
This series needs to continue! I love the short videos, and how informational it is
Maannnnn I sure miss Zach in the Blade HQ videos. He brought so much more information and details about the knives.
For the acid container I recommend you guys use a glass container, glass is virtually impervious to acids so you should have no long term issues containing the acid! my 2 cents ;) great video guys!
Jorge Moreno I use ferric a lot and it’s a salt and is safe in plastic...it comes in a plastic bottle😉
@@bendejong8188 true that just what I do with every acid not all are plastic safe
@@Termiux Huh?
just make sure you dont add water to powdered ferric chloride even in glass it can get hot enough to melt it & if doing a 3 or 4 to 1 solution in plastic probably put 1/2 of acid into water wait a few mins put other 1/2 in
(can crack crucible adding just a little water to mound of powdered feric)
@@wesleypowershe’s saying that he uses other acids, not just ferric chloride. Some acids can eat plastic, so he just stores them all in glass anyway.
Thanks, after wasting my time on 30+ other videos I finally found you.
This video is hands down, the best tutorial on Ferric Chloride etching on CZcams.
All the other videos are weak.
If you want to get a copper or brass finish on your blade/hardware, after removing it form the ferric chloride and washing it, scrap it with either a piece of copper wire or a brass bristled brush (they use them in gold a lot) and it will transfer the copper/brass over to it and will retain fairly well, and then you can still throw it in the stones if you want the stonewash look.
Hey thanks that’s an awesome tip I’m gunna try both on them on some cheap kershaws. Stay safe and thanks also great video
Copper plating seems easier
@@xvaldez3284 How do you cooper plate a blade
I have been searching for a short straight to the point on acid etch, and y’all are perfect, thank you so much!
Love these sort of contents. Especially the anodising video. Straightforward and clear , providing good cheap easy and home alternatives , no need for fancy machines or gigs.
Well, except the power source... With batteries I got pretty inconsistent result as they drain quite fast. I'm now waiting on a power source.
He tellin us where to find all these acids and such, and I’m here like, “bro, where you get them gloves?!”
Go to auto zone or home depot and they'll have nitrile gloves
LOL
😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@xvaldez3284 Not right now they don't...
Did it just like you did it and I am very happy with the results!! I did this on my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 S30V blade and stainless steel pocket clip. I let both etch for about 6 minutes and it brought the metal to a cool grey color, which I prefer, then rock bath lasted about 3-5 minutes. Wish I could show pics! Thanks for the video and the techniques. Love Blade HQ on CZcams!!!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this content from you guys, keep these coming, these are amazing!
I recently acid etched and stone washed my opinel carbone with this technique. And the result is beautiful 😍
how did you take off the handle? Or did you leave it on? Is that possible?
Great video. One of the better “how to” videos I’ve seen in a while! I did a Benchmade 940 last year.
Really well done and thorough. One of the best ones out there on acid washing.
This is great stuff. Can’t wait for more!
Just followed y’all’s guide for my CJRB talla and Elementum and I’m sooooo happy with how they came out! Thanks for the how to!
Man, this is seriously awesome. I cant wait to try this. Thanks for posting!
great series and a great stay-at-home diy project activity during these times
Windex is great for neutralizing after the acid bath. Great video Zac!
I've tried lemon juice on cpm-3v and it comes out great. You end up with a nice black, non-reflective coating. It takes hours rather than minutes. Great job on the videos!
This is my new favourites series! Hell yes
I've done this on two knives now, an R1D2 and a Para 3 and I LOVE the outcome. It's the only non-bare finish I like.
Hey man .. i m biggener and had 10 questions .. you answered all of them in 5 minutes ..
Your are very straight forward, your language is very clear for me ..
Really appriciated..
I will not miss any of your videios ..
These How To Knife videos are exactly what I want to see!
Wow! Just tried this for the first time on a CJRB Taiga with grey scales (my new go-to EDC beater). Did all the metal parts, but didn’t stonewash. Came out awesome!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this guys. I love these finishes and hope I can exercise some restraint and not just stain ALL my blades!
It looks so good that not doing all your blades really is the struggle😁
This is a really great series that is informative and entertaining. Thanks -
Benchmade's Lifesharp department is going to love you.
Not sure they will honor the warranty after dipping the blade in acid and shaking it around with rocks. Lol But they are cool enough that they just might still sharpen it for you.
Even if you break the blade I believe you can still pay for a blade replacement.
@@joemoore1382 I'm pretty sure that you are correct. I just don't know how they feel about custom acid etching or if they will still sharpen the custom blade.
Pretty sure they know you dissembled the knife to do it and therefore void your warranty. Whether they chose to enforce it is up to them.
If you are going to dissassemble /reassemble a knife and do the acid bath customization yourself then Im gonna make the assumption that you have the skills to sharpen a knife so that you wouldn't be shipping it back to Benchmade for them to do it.
Really digging these types of videos!
Great instructional video. My old Benchmade 940 now sports a dark, acid washed blade.
Best video on YT about knife patina at homme with good results.
Wow, love this! I’m getting ready to put a brass scale on my CRKT Pilar and the acid and stone wash would look cool with a brass look.
I literally was just looking for this like 30 minutes ago after watching the titanium anodization video
Glad we could help😁
@@BladeHQ can you anodize other materials the same way
@@craigtorr5521 the process we showed in our annodization video only works with titanium.
@@BladeHQ I thought you said it doesn't work with titanium?
I can't get any acid anymore since RadioShack closed down 😢
I like that you say what is needed to get the point across. I now have no fear to try this.
Been subscribed since 2018. Best video yet! Keep it up!
You guys should do a blade shapes guide. There are alot of things that personally I don't know about why different blade shapes do better at certain tasks, or even how to use each blade shape effectively. I can almost guarantee that I'm not the only one in this situation and would love to be educated so that we don't waist our money on what could be "the wrong knife". Just food for thought. Keep up the great work!!!
OHHHHHHHHHHH THIS IS PERFECT thank you! I don't have all the materials right now but as soon as I can get them I'll do this to a knife or two (I know, it'll end up being all of my knives ahahahhahaa)
Awesome series - thank you! 👍
Wow, thanks guys, that is by far the best and the most understandable video about blackwash blade upgrade) Tried a couple of Mora ad Opinel carbon steel blades using Cola), that was not bad, but with stonewash it is much better to my eye) Thanks!
Love these vids.
Thanks for this video. Been looking forward to it since you teased it on Banter. Cant wait to give this a try with my Benchmade Griptilian.
Woooow, just in time)) literally I was an hour away from acid-stonewashing my knife xDxD
Fantastic video. Well done!!!
Can't wait to try this out
Love these videos!!!!
I always wanted to do this to my brs rep, now I can finally do so thanks:)
Blade runners systems replicant
That stone washed elementum and tenacious👌👌
I’m so excited to try this. I’ve always wanted to
This is freaking golden!!
That was an excellent tutorial!
I was just watching your latest wow and was stonewashing my Cold Steel Pro Lite Tanto and than the Recon 1 Tanto. I etched them yesterday. I also acidcetched and stonewashed the pocket clip and the lockbar.
Nice!👊
Yes!! Yes I have wondered...THANK ZAC!!!
Great series.
Turned out sick. Thanks for the tutorial.
Great video def on the list to try
Nice choice on that nail polish color. Most people I've seen used transparent, but that blue is spot on.
Use colored polish and it will be much easier to see where you have (and haven’t) put it, and, later, whether or not you’ve gotten all of it off.
Awesome video! Thank you.
Wow amazing knives video ever!!! :D
Love the diy vids! Keep them coming and stay healthy and safe blade HQ!
Thanks! You too👊
it was extremely goooood
Thanks, it’s very helpful 👍🏼
Just did my verawood S35VN QSP Hawk with the etch and tumble....came out awesome!!! So glad I tried it. Next is my poor scratched to death Spyderco Domino w CTS-XHP, and maybe the blue Bugout for hell of it like yours in video!
Thanks Zac
Guys thank you very much for this video, it was very interesting, I will test it one day
Awesome vid thx for the information !
I love that mat
I did this to my spyderco resilience but i also did the pocket clip to match, came out very cool looking
great series
Awsome video thank you!!
I really want to do this to my pen. Great video!
I'm thinking about doing this on my Recon 1 S35VN Spear Point Deseret Warrior Edition.
Thanks for the video my Bladed Brother ⚔️✝️
The swiss army corkscrew replacement better be the next video...ever since you hinted at it I've been super excited.
Nicholas Pearse I’m waiting for it to drop so I can see how easy it is before buying a compact
the good old times when bhq was actually fun to watch..
very useful, thanks
Good OG vibes with this one.
very cool! keep making these plz :D
This looks like a great "in between" from the regular Bugout and the Blackout!
Not disagreeing with you at all, but the 535GRY-1 is also a good "in between" as it's a grey coated blade.👍
Can I just mention how great these vidoes are on the production side as well as the informational side....
Thanks! Jamie and Carson work hard on these.
@@BladeHQ and you can really see that... Stay safe ;)
Cool video, Thanks!
Awesome guys need me a bench made bug out to do this with !!!
Great video !
Thank you.
Thanks🙏
I did this with my Spyderco Tenacious about 9 months ago. It turned out great. The only thing I didn't do was dilute the ferric chloride. It took about 2 mins to get the finish I wanted. It has lightened up a bit since then.
Cool thanks for sharing.
NIIIIIICE Thanks y'all
....Awesome video!
Niiiice!!!😃😃😃😃
I'll just buy mine already done if I want that look. Thanks for the video though, nice to know how to do it.
Awesome video
Awesome
The knife choice and title could've been better
"acid etching your knife while the world is ending"
True we missed that one🤣
Common, we will get through this!!
@@BladeHQ hi, can I use rubbing alcohol instead of acetone?
@@andreasplesko1543 Hello from the future. We didn't get through this yet.
@@_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- Hello from the future again, we still didn't quite get through this.
Did that on a few customs i made. really easy process.
This is great! I have big plans now for quarantine times. Could you do one on etching a logo or picture into a blade? I'm thinking the same thing with more tape?
Wow great video
I like the Okland construction hardhat ;-)
A simpler and easier version of this is to boil white vinegar and dunk the blade in that for a good 10-20 minutes. It’s food safe too! It also looks very nice and dark after.
what is this process called? i want to look up a video tutorial for this
Yea i really need to subscribe to this channel.
Dude.. That civivi looks awesome with that finish
