- 📜 Byzantine Empire: Justinian and Theodora - Part 7 - Extra History
Belisarius had broken the siege around Rome. Now he wanted to push on to the Ostrogothic capital in Ravenna, so Justinian sent fresh troops with new commanders: Narses and John. Belisarius ordered John to take his cavalry north and secure the route the Ravenna, but John bypassed several cities that seemed too difficult until he was offered a willing surrender by the people of Ariminum. When Belisarius ordered him to return to the main army, John refused, and soon found himself surrounded by the same forces he'd declined to fight earlier. Narses insisted that they rescue him, so Belisarius devised a plan and tricked the Ostrogoths into thinking his force was larger than it really was, so they fled without joining battle. John gave all the credit for his rescue to Narses, and a divide grew between the old guard loyal to Belisarius and the new troops loyal to Narses. Even though Belisarius had a letter from Justinian giving him sole control of the army, Narses argued over the semantics of the order and continued to do as he liked. He roped Belisarius into besieging Urbinus, then decided to abandon his own plan and return to Ariminum. Belisarius took Urbinus by a stroke of luck and wanted to send reinforcements to the Ostrogoth-besieged city of Mediolanum, supposedly under Roman protection, but John would only accept orders from Narses and stalled until after the city fell. When Roman troops finally arrived in Mediolanum, they found the entire city butchered and burned to the ground.

All of Byzantine history can really be summed up as, "They made a tremendous comeback, and then everything that could go wrong went wrong all at once."
For those who need a modern reference point, Mediolanum's name is now shortened... it's called Milan now
I suppose we have the benefit of hindsight, but it's honestly hard to understand how Narses and John were willing to disobey the orders of the guy who conquered north Africa, Sicily and Rome with only a few thousand men. How do you look at the dude who accomplished that and say 'yeah, I probably know better'? Especially Narses, who actually seems pretty capable.
Mad respect for the roman commander that tried to get the civilians spared...shame he was fighting a hopeless battle.
sigh
If you had to pick between one commander or three: always pick one. Because as history has shown us time and time again that too many cooks ruins the pot.
The Story of Belisarius is a depressing one. Because in spite of every great victory he brought to the Byzantines, for every great city he conquered, there were unforeseen forces constantly at work to destroy his reputation and hinder the success.
If this is the cracks "Beginning to spread" I don't want to see what happens when things start "falling apart".
So Walpole is interfering... why didn't he make the Ostrogoth armies entirely disappear by bribing them ?
I would have used the incident at the end to show how John acted against the interests of the state and had him arrested and relived of command
Belisarius, one of the greatest generals history has ever known, is being beaten down by a politician and someone else high up in the military ranks.
....Okay, right off the bat, two questions come to mind:
"no explicable reason" Cuts to walpole. Well played EC, well played.
Justinian & Theodora are back! In Italy, their general faces fierce opposition... but not from the enemies he expected.
Belisarius!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Narses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and.... John?
I'm glad to get back to Justinian and Theodora, but I'm also sad because I already know it's going to get way more depressing from here :(
Oh, so THIS is when things start going all "Crusader Kings". I wonder just how angry poor Belasarius was when he realized his army was factionalizing.
I feel a Yi moment in this episode.
It was Walpole.
