How to pick up a turtle: 1. Compliment the turtle on his looks 2. Offer to buy him a drink 3. Get to know him a little while you have a few drinks 4. Suggest he come back to your place with you
Thank you for actually saying that the tail is bad for them. So many people online probably ended up killing these poor creatures from spinal cord damage.
I never actually thought about it but picking it up from the tail would actually be pretty bad. It's funny bc people know not to pick animals like cats/dogs and stuff up like that by their tail. I wonder why people (like me lol) thought that snappers were excluded from that rule. Not saying from experience, I don't plan on ever touching one even with this new knowledge. I like my fingers.
They cool amazing animals but I have to say this though if one of these get ahold of you they could be extremely dangerous they have a very bad bite !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Common snapping turtles like this one jew pressure 350 pounds per square inch the larger ones down south the alligator snapping turtle has 1,200 pounds per square inch you do not want to get tagged by either one of those trust me
When I was 17 I stopped my car to move a snapper out of the road. Fortunately, I grew up watching Steve Irwin and got the job done with all fingers intact.
I have a pet red ear slider, and the first day we had her she got dropped because she hissed at my mom, she was the size of only two pennies, lesson of the day… no turtle are safe to hold, not even small ones
Ah not mean at all. They can only bite off your finger or severely damage your hand to where evebtually your hand would have to be cut off and be a nubb. It will protect your oojd from any people tryibf to swim in it. Guard turtle on duty :))) oh and never put that that near the crotch cause you will never go to the bathroom the same again and never be able to have sexual intercourse the same again but other than that ahhh nothing to worry about those cute little water beauties 😊😊😊😊😊
A snapping turtle is kind of like a horse. Put your hand to its nose so it can smell you. They become relaxed and are more social. 🤣🤣 Oh yeah. If one ever bites you, they wont let go until they hear thunder. Sometimes it takes a week or more.👍
Thank you for making this, you probably saved so many turtles. People don’t realize how heavy these guys can actually get and that their tail is connected to their spine. They’re hardy animals but they deserve respect
I have moved a few out of the road. One thing you didn't mention is they will pee on you and it reeks. I usually find a stout stick and just kind of gently push them off the pavement in the direction they are heading.
Step 1: put your hands gently inside your pockets. Step 2: turn on your heel and proceed moving forward. 😊 No harm to you or the animal, you're welcome. (Side note, these are powerful creatures that are capable of amputations of anything unfortunate to be close to the mouth)
Im here because I’m in Florida and these guys find their way to the roads. Now I have a better idea on how to save on from getting destroyed by a semi truck.
We have a 50 plus acre pond just across the road from our house, it’s got snappers of all sizes, occasionally they wander near enough to the house during egg laying season, (right now), that I do move them, my trick is one hand right behind the head on the shell, one near the tail…they a prolific squirters and it’s wretched…avoid it if possible…the head is fast, agile, and has reach, never been tagged, and would rather not…second choice just behind the front legs, they dig you with the rears… but it’s tolerable…
I feel like if I had to move one of these guys, I’d want a pair of thick 15th century plate gauntlets just in case. Even then I feel like one of these guys could shear through the metal
Haha! I stopped in the road on my scooter and moved one. I grabbed him by the sides like that and I swear he ALMOST reached around to bite my hand. They have long necks lol. Got by unscathed.
Thank you for advice I find them in road all the time in North Carolina and people are scared to move them from road by tail , I don’t mean pain so this helps ❤
You can see the whole video of me wading into a knee deep vernal pool, grabbing it and it trying to bite and eventually tiring out at the end, then let go 👍
Where I live there is a snapper turtle which is I would say 15 pounds. The animal crosses the road with a six inch incline step which the snapper fights to get over and cross the road to get to the creek. This turtle does this every day. Within one hour time frame. The cars even stop and either wait or help the snapper get across. What a wonderful sight when man and nature help each other. Nice !!!!@@WildLife_Perspective
While I love all sorts of animals, this one would be big no-no to touch or even get near. And if it needs medical attention, better to call professionals. I really like my fingers, my horses would be upset if I would lose them - I couldn´t scritch properly! This big guy seemed a more chill, but I don´t think they would usually appreciate someone holding them around their...more sensitive area :D
For alligator snappers you can grab the shell above the head because they can't reach there. Don't try that on any other kind though if you like having fingers
I picked up a snapper who had just unearthed himself. He smelled soooo bad. Chesapeake Bay black mud.) He was in the middle of crossing a curvy country road with blind spots on either side of him. So I moved him to the other side of the road in the direction he was already traveling. I had no idea what I was doing and very luckily, when he reached back to bit me, I was holding him 'just' beyond his reach. Scared me. Whew!
@@WildLife_Perspective Thanks ❣️ I also count myself lucky no one came around either blind curve to hit me and the snapper. Or my car as the woods came up the the edge of the road, so my car was stopped -in- the road.
You have to get right in front of them and wave your finger in front of its face. It literally hypnotizes them, and at that point you just cradle it like a baby. “Boop the snoot” periodically to let it know you are not a threat. Hope this helps! 😇🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
A few days ago I was on my way to work and saw a small snapping turtle trying to cross the road. I stopped my car picked it up and set it down on the other side of the road where it was trying to get to. I tell my colleagues about it and a few days later this comes up in my feed.
I remember picking up a roadside snapper was one of those smaller snapping turtles that they changed my view that turtles were slow...that thing zoomed around...dont remember how long we had it or what happened to it
Good rule of thumb is unless the animal uses its tail to hang onto things with its whole bodyweight, don't pick it up by the tail. It's insane to me how thoughtless people can be when it comes to this.

I think I'll stick to my method. Hasn't failed yet. I simply....don't pick up a snapping turtle. 😁
Warning - some snapping turtles have an incredibly long necks and can snap off fingers. Best not to touch them at all.
As long as the belly side is facing you when you pick them up. They arent designed to bite UNDER the shell
They can bite back to the tail. Start by giving it a stick to snap at. Then pick it up.
