Green Green Grass of Home
1965년 Porter Wagoner가 처음 부른 컨트리 뮤직 곡으로,
발표될 당시에 미국 컨트리송 차트 4위를 차지할 정도로 인기가 있었다.
이후 1966년 Tom Jones가 곡을 약간 수정해서 다시 불렀는데,
그 해 영국 넘버원 싱글을 차지할 정도로 전세계적인 인기를 끌었다.
이후 수십차례 리메이크 될 정도로 인지도가 있는 노래가 되었고,
한국에는 조영남이 '고향의 푸른 잔디'로 리메이크 되었다.
처음 부분은 주인공이 고향의 푸른 잔디가 깔린 풍경을 둘러보고 가족과 지인들과의 재회를 하는 장면인 듯 싶더니, 후반부 가사에서 반전이 일어난다.
앞부분 가사의 모든 내용은
사형수인 주인공이 사형 집행 전날 마지막 밤에 꾼 꿈의 내용이다.
어떤 사유로 주인공이 사형수가 되었는지 알 수는 없으나,
그는 자신이 죽은 뒤에 고향의 떡갈나무 주변 푸른 잔디 아래에 묻힌다는 것을 암시한다.

내가 열차에서 내려서 내다 본 옛 고향의 모습은 그대로이고.
and there to meet me is my Mama and Papa.
그 곳에선 어머니와 아버지가 저를 마중나왔네요.

길 아래에선 금발 머리에 앵두같은 입술을 가진 Mary가 달려오고 있어요.

고향 집의 푸르고 푸른 잔디의 느낌은 이렇게나 좋군요.

그래요, 그들 모두 팔을 뻗으며, 즐겁게 웃으면서 저를 만나러 올 거에요.
