The Kraal: A Downtown Cape Town, South Africa slum (part 2)

Welcome to visit number two with Neslie and her two precious children in The Kraal, a downtown Cape Town, South Africa slum.
Mom explains how she ended up living in the slums. She also shares her hopes for her family’s future. She emphasized that her children must stay in school.
I later had a candid private conversation with 12-year-old Shayid, and 8-year-old Shayida. The excerpt of our chat that I share here centred on food-insecurity (although in video #3 I will share more of the children’s’ woe as they explained how they are treated poorly because they live in the slums…).
I provided the children with a small amount of money, 40 South African Rands. 40 SAR doesn’t go very far but they had plans to spend it wisely.
You will see that Shayid is yelling at a passerby…There is so much need in the community. An adult woman who is out-of-camera frame was trying to gain a benefit from the children-assuming that I had given them money. I know this to be true because the children told me so, and she later came up to my rental vehicle, knocked on the window, and asked me for money.
These dear children were so precious! I know that 40 SAR and two bottles of Coke is not a help to them in their overall plight. But, I hope I made them feel special if only for a fleeting moment.

Thanks for writing! I’m sure that Cape Town, like every other jurisdiction in the world has hidden away places that not all have discovered.

BoKaap must have been a cool place to live back in the day! Well, I imagine it would still have a fun feel to it today! I enjoyed the neighbourhood.
