Actually in South Africa the white people speak “Afrikaans”, which is basically old skool Dutch. I am Surinamese and I once conversed this way with a White South African dude. We could understand each other perfectly.

So plenty of english planters moved to Jamaican with all their slaves, thats why the Jamaican patois has a few words that are also spoken in Suriname: for example nyam , woyo , fu true , fotto. Guyana which is located next to Suriname dont use those words

I was living in Helsingør in 1968 and later i move to Copenhagen (christiana) In those days our camera was our memories which we share verbally with each other But in those days the Danish people where always the most open minded ,caring and helpful toward me, i will always respect this country and his people

A small correction Gus. many other places in turkey has, mosque-greek orthodox church, armenian church, catholic church and a synagogue next to each other. Yeniköy in Istanbul is a known example for tourists but smaller towns always have/had this. I grew up with Armenian church, Italian Catholic church, oldest mosque of the town being next to a synagogue.

I dare to say that Surinamese people speak Dutch better than regular Dutch people. I remember in school (Amsterdam) how their pronounciation sounds more classical and correct.
I have often heard Surinamese people say that, but I really don't think this has any basis in reality. I am Surinamese, and I know the kind of Dutch my countrymen speak. "Surinamese Dutch" is different, rather than "better", or else we would win at least some of the language games on Dutch tv. The Belgians (to the south of The Netherlands) also speak Dutch/Flemish, and win almost every Language based game on Dutch tv that they participate in. They also often win the televised National Dictee for Dutch speakers all over the world, in which participants have to write down a rather challenging dictation, full of obscure words and expressions and complicated spelling.

There are many more countries. Indonesia (South Melaku & West Papua included), USA (Pella Dutch, Little Holland in Michigan, Mohawk- & Jersey-Dutch), historically also Guyana (Bernice Dutch, died out in 2012 I believe), Sri Lanka (Ceylon-Dutch), Indonesia (Javindo & Petjoh, nowadays only spoken by Indo's (mixed Indonesian Dutch)), Virgin Islands, Bahamas (N-word Dutch). Also, Dutch is intelligible with Afrikaans (historically named Cape-Dutch), one of the languages of Namibia and South Africa
They speak Dutch because Suriname is a former Dutch colony like Indonesia. But we Indonesian can't speak Dutch because we don't use Dutch as a main language. Only elder generation who live during the Dutch colonial era can speak Dutch.

There is a Dutch documentary of a Ghanian man who was invited by a Surinamese group to visit Suriname. They brought the Ghanian man to a Maroon village (descendants of runaway slaves who still preserved their culture) and they basically spoke the same language and they understood each other perfectly.

We speak Dutch, that's correct but we don't 'think' Dutch. There is the big difference (besides our skin colour)
Suriname for me is like Cape Town, except it's an entire country and your Dutch is nearer to standard Dutch in comparison to Afrikaans

Ofcourse they speak dutch in Suriname. Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands. That's why the official language is dutch. Suriname is the only dutch speaking country in South- America. Proud to be Surinamese. Love my country. 🇸🇷

@S Uddin was Dutch Guiana, still sometimes referred to as that when talking about the whole belt that includes British Guiana, Dutch Guiana and French Guiana. Though there are two more less frequently referenced as Guiana’s, they are (Spanish Guiana - Venezuela) and (Portuguese Guiana - Brazil)
I’m Guyanese and wanna visit, Dutch sounds so difficult to learn, though my friend visited and said majority of the people have at least a Basic understanding of English... #Awesome❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

@@karanpersaud7840 was never officially Dutch Guiana. Dutch Guiana was a collection of colonies nl. Pomeroon, Demerara, Berbice, Essequibo and Suriname. When the British took over the others and merged them into British Guiana, people informally called Suriname Dutch Guiana. Just to distinguish them from each other. However since the beginning of the first colonisation it was Suriname.

There are many more countries. Indonesia (South Melaku & West Papua included), USA (Pella Dutch, Little Holland in Michigan, Mohawk- & Jersey-Dutch), historically also Guyana (Bernice Dutch, died out in 2012 I believe), Sri Lanka (Ceylon-Dutch), Indonesia (Javindo & Petjoh, nowadays only spoken by Indo's (mixed Indonesian Dutch)), Virgin Islands, Bahamas (N-word Dutch). Also, Dutch is intelligible with Afrikaans (historically named Cape-Dutch), one of the languages of Namibia and South Africa

They speak Dutch because Suriname is a former Dutch colony like Indonesia. But we Indonesian can't speak Dutch because we don't use Dutch as a main language. Only elder generation who live during the Dutch colonial era can speak Dutch.
That's good , asians are so lucky their parents never taught them colonial languages other than east Timor people and all those who speak English

There is a Dutch documentary of a Ghanian man who was invited by a Surinamese group to visit Suriname. They brought the Ghanian man to a Maroon village (descendants of runaway slaves who still preserved their culture) and they basically spoke the same language and they understood each other perfectly.
