I understand that Katy Perry's new song is supposed to be satire, but the involvement of Dr. Luke and the fact that Woman's World isn't distinguishable enough from the thing it's supposed to be satirizing feels like a giant middle finger to women and feminists. I love Gwen Stefani. She’s now “past her prime,” and a few years ago she tried to make a comeback, put out a very in-your-face (but honestly not bad) comeback song, then got mocked for Slow Clap and ended up not putting out the album. Now she seems to have just said “fuck it” and starting putting out cheesy as hell love songs to her husband. I don’t love this “era” of her music, but I think it’s a hell of a lot more flattering than a comeback attempt that doesn’t land. And really, if I want good Gwen music I can go back to LAMB, The Sweet Escape, and the entirety of No Doubt’s discography.
I guess what I’m trying to say is there’s no shame in a successful artist hanging it up and not trying to appeal to capitalism anymore. It’s a much better look than desperately trying to cling onto mainstream relevance and looking out of touch

There’s also the fact that artists are not aging their music with their original fanbase! The life experiences that people face in their mid-late 30s and onwards is incredibly underrepresented in compared to the life experiences of teenagers and young adults, and are just as valid to sing about.
However, the problem is that celebrities live in a bubble where they often don’t experience those life transitions at the same rate (if at all) to their fanbase. So you see a lot of legacy artists trying to compete with the 20-something’s because they still feel like they’re in the same stage of life. And it doesn’t resonate with audiences the same, because the (original) audience has aged out and there’s now a disconnect between the music, the artist, and the audience.

I dont think it’s simply that. Mainstream pop is geared towards young adults and teens. Once older people become out of touch with what is trendy and cool, they have a habit of hating on the younger generations. Eminem would have kept coasting on his legacy title despite not releasing memorable music in the past decade, had his new releases didn’t sound like an old man shaking his fist at the youth. And right before that, gen xers/millennials were whining about a made up scenario of gen z trying to ‘cancel’ Eminem. So that’s not going to appeal to a younger audience. Beyoncé and Taylor swift have been able to maintain relevancy by not disrespecting younger audiences. And although they’re not current main pop girls, Gen z is also pretty well receptive of Mariah, britney and Kesha.

Also Many fans of other hair metal or glam metal fans are asking their artists to retire, rock is a genre highly based on the frontman’s capabilities to sing in rock there is no razzle dazzle to cover up a bad voice. So rock it’s a crazy demanding genre which has made many loose their voices and fans asking them to retire and yet they don’t listen.

They need to stop making the main target 18-30 year olds and create target markets for people before and beyond that age range. Artists, actors, etc need to stop being pressured to mold and modify their work and image to appeal to young people (not even going into the issues of global audience marketing) and young people need to be able to have their own tween/teen/new culture separate from everyone else. This way everyone can have the space and room to grow or maintain within their respective areas without the hogging of spotlight or ageist prejudices. Because if it was 18-30 lady Gaga, Katy and Nicki would be top 10 frequently as 75-80% of their fan base are in between 18-30 where as in the 13-25 demographic it’s more 35%-50% ( Nicki on the higher end of this) of their fanbase, which is why they aren’t marketed as well because most of the 13-25 demographic sees these artists as old where they see artists like Ariana grande( who will probably will be in the same situation 5-10 years from now), Olivia Rodrigo and SZA as more appealing to the 2nd half of Gen Z and Gen Alpha

I think Madonna is a great example of artistic resilience. Ever since 2008 she's been called all sorts of things by the media for working with younger singers/producers. Yet so, she had the biggest tour ever made by a solo artist for years, her mdna tour was the biggest of 2012, even when her next album leaked it still managed to sell well + have a successful tour. Even when she did a less mainstream album with madame X, she was still hitting it. And she just had one of the biggest shows ever made by a solo artist in rio. It's insane how consistent she is for a singer who debuted in 80s, specially a woman (I know her race plays a part in it but even so, not many can say they have a similar career). • @sofia_c_1
      @sofia_c_1 Před měsícem +4

I can think of more than a couple of artists that do music even if most people aren't going to listen because they love to. That's it. They do it either for themselves or for the fans but aren't pushy about it and stay in their lane. They keep doing it well into their 70's and beyond. But if the artists go "look at me, look at me, look at me" towards the general public and they create something that's obviously recycled, plain bad or tone deaf, and later, when the general public does look their way they get called out for that, then it's on them. Both the internet and the music industry are far and wide you can perfectly put music out or videos and not a soul that isn't already your fan would know. But if you want public attention and praise you need to be prepared for public judgement. I think most people aren't opposed to them continuing to create and to evolve but are opposed to the nonsense and to see their faves become a parody of what they once were. Artists that are unnecessarily controversial or inarguably bad people are a different thing because people are lining up decades in advance to see their careers die (the point being that you just can't afford to be controversial if you don't have the music to back it up, because people will be waiting to see you slip and when you slip it's game over). But generally speaking well liked celebrities can continue being celebrities forever as long as they manage themselves, because people don't like to see things they love "die" particularly in humiliating ways, as it sours all the good memories. So in short no, it isn't ageist. Particularly because just as being young doesn't guarantee neither success nor respect, age doesn't (and shouldn't) do that either. Age does afford them a level of grace most younger artists never get to receive. The music industry (on the commercial side) is hyper competitive in nature, every release could be the last, if they want to stay there they either swim or they drown like everyone else. There are more peaceful waters for those that aren't into that lifestyle anymore, but that place is most definitely not in the eye of the masses.

For Harriet discussed Cuties if you want a Harvard grad black feminist lecture breakdown. Some media literacy got lost in the righteous anger over children in the film industry. All children’s acting in media should get this same treatment of not watching if the kids exploitation is the issue. Just in the same way I don’t have to change cuz my creepy uncle comes over the actors didn’t have to dress and move conservatively to not be sexualized. The camera does not frame and linger or move over the children’s bodies. It’s not supposed to be satire at all but a drama about what we, brown girls, go through and trying to be sexual objects is being depicted. Movies about our nuanced lives are important and it was sad to see such a film be smeared from people willing to cancel a black women’s work over discomfort and a seeming aversion to feminist media literacy outside of the hot takes. I feel like a lot of these artists kinda have a bad perception of retirement so they just try to make as much music as possible to keep the business going, which is ironic cause if ANYBODY can just choose to retire one day its them, they have the money to live comfortably so why the hell not.

I always look to "Thinking of You" as a reference, a mid temp pop rock ballad where she sings with so much soul, you feel it in your bones. It's her most powerful song in her discography and severely underrated. After every listen I'm feeling a little crushed, and EVERYONE can relate to it's subject matter. She needs to drop the gimmicks and the theatrics, pick up her guitar and SING.

I believe ageism against women in music is very very real, but it's slooowly starting to change. Kesha is coming back as well at 37. and now we have a 26 year old (Chappell roan) just now really breaking into the industry. It all doesn't sound like much, but it's a start.
I think the problem with Katy isn't so much her age, but who she is as a person. Her working with Dr Luke for example speaks volumes and makes the feminist message seem even more disingenuous than it already was. fans more and more want artists who they can connect to and relate to, which is why singer-songwriters are so big right now. So Gen Z doesn't hate him but millennials think that calling out his old lyrics for being abusive is...cancelling?

Honestly, I think that this whole thing with ageism is what's causing the music from nowadays to be low quality. Because the music industry nowadays is caring more about promoting young artists that are stars on the rising than giving credit to the artists that have been in the music business for more than 10 years to establish themselves as icons and legends, it feels like the message that the industry is trying to convey is the old cliché of: "The younger and prettier you are, more success you will have".
Therefore, this is why I have noticed that the artists from nowadays are more about having a good artistic image and branding rather than making good music, which is why people are so nostalgic when it comes to thinking about how the 80s, 90s, 2000s and early 2010s were the epitome of Pop Culture.
Also, since nostalgia has become a thing in recent years, I couldn't help but notice that when the music from nowadays is not low quality, some of the music is too reminiscent of past decades, to the point that is more like a carbon copy of the music from the past.
So going back to the whole branding and artistic image, with nostalgia being a trend, when I see how some artists look like when it comes to their wardrobe and overall artistic image, I think right away of artists from past decades. For example: With Tate McRae, her looks, live performances, and even her voice are too reminiscent of Britney Spears, which is why despite getting praised for being one of the young artists from nowadays that is bringing back the vibe of "the female popstar who dances her heart out on stage", she is also getting criticized for her aesthetic, branding and artistic image being too reminiscent of Britney, to the point that it is almost like a copycat and therefore, it doesn't come out as authentic due to the lack of creativity and originality.
With this being said, I couldn't help asking myself: if nostalgia has become the trend for music nowadays, where do they leave the artists that paved the way for this young generation of so-called artists? No wonder the music industry has gone downhill with the whole ageism and young artists ripping off the looks and music from past decades.

At that point, chasing numbers doesn't work because you're going up against people in your field with their ears more to the ground in terms of what sounds, styles and musical flourishes are pppular, and because they're from that generation, they know organically.

To put it in perspective, I just saw a leg of my favorite punk band's fairwell tour... They've been together 40+ years.
I'm not saying it's bad, it's just strange. My son likes Eminem. I did too when I was his age (Still do). That was not the case with nearly any of my parent's music I liked.
I mean, The Beatles were only together for 7 years before they bowed out as a group and went solo creatively.

I feel like an artist should retire when the quality of their work starts to get bad and when it starts to ruin their legacy. For example Kanye.. known for being instrumental in pushing the rap genre forward but is now known for putting a string of subpar work. I think it's cool to hear people talk about their experiences as an older person but if a person is still rapping or singing about the same things they did when they were 20 (DRAKE ) Then maybe they should consider packing it up.
Another example could be Nicki who has cemented herself as being the best or one of the best rappers of all time yet with her recent antics (like marrying a s3x offender, harassing the victim, getting into beefs with the younger girls etc )in these past few years is ruining her legacy.
