There are tons of TRRS splitters on the market. The difference with this is the "mic" conductor has a resistor to attenuate the signal to work with a line level external device. Line - to - mic attenuators are also available. Usually marketed to photographers who need to feed a line level signal into their camera's mic input. Without the attenuator the powerful line level will overdrive and distort the mic input.

    • @playpm

Damn, I use line out directly into camera mic input all the time, I just turn down the volume 😅

Guerrilla recording techniques for the modern era. Glad to see the "fnck the expensive gear gatekeeping" attitude is still alive and well.
Just FYI a lot of the magic is the fact it's attenuating the signal passively. It's possible to build a cable (or even adapter) with the right routing and resistance to lower the input from Line (or headhone level, which is basically line level in any actual functional sense, fight me) down to mic level and avoid overdriving or damage.
You can also just turn the output down really, really low, but then you have the output's amp noise floor, so that's not desirable unless you're aiming for "hissy lofi." That one works better if you're using a headphone jack to go through instrument-level gear (aka guitar pedals), though the same problem is present to a lesser degree. No special equipment needed at all, just make sure it's a mono signal (or everything you want to run through it is panned to the left) since the TRS cable only makes contact with Tip and Sleeve for guitar gear. You can also easily make a summing TRS-TS cable if you want to be super proper.

Tascam makes an audio interface that connects to the headphone jack on any smart phone. It’s not $5, but it’s pretty cheap. It allows you to switch between line, instrument and mic signals. It can even provide phantom power, but you need 2 AA batteries to use that feature. Every other feature can be used with no batteries.

Yes, but it's only really easy if you've had plenty of experience putting cables like this together before. You'd also need 3-way screened cable which may be tricky to source in short lengths. I made a basic heaphone/mic adaptor many years ago for my iPad 4 using an old discarded TRRS to Phono video lead (you can find plenty of these usually in thrift/charity shops that sell electrical goods). In this case you'd need two cables, a resistor (start by using a 1k ohm resistor to attenuate the mic feed, then experiment from there), a good soldering iron, shrink tube, and something to hold each cable while resoldering. But is it worth going to all that grief when you can buy one already made for a tenner?

Been following you for a while but I think your approach is fundamentally is wrong. There are some reasons that some stuff are more expensive than other thigns. For example a car is always going to be more expensive than public transport. You have a bit of clickbaity approach going on like this; 'this thing is better than 10k worth x device'. I'm not defending companies overpicing their items but with this mentality, why buy a car where we can instead ride the bus? it's the same thing. Why buy clothes where instead we could wrap ourself with garbage out in the street, it's free?
Most of the time when you buy a 'designed' object, you do pay for it's design and the innovation and intuitive. OP1 is the clunkiest and most sorry device in 2024 to not have a basic function as undo. But I've never seen any other device (apart from PO's) that within 2-3 minutes, I can make a groove that actually sounds unique. That's why it's worth than just 5 dollar cable. Not saying it worths 1.6k, but still, comparing it to cable contraptions, adapters + ipad, iphone+ converter, mac mini + mic etc is a bit clickbaity. Of course my voice memo app records sounds. But it's nothing like ableton. Just because they both have CPU's in it, it doesn't essentially make both are the same devices.
Sorry, been holding this for a while. I think your attitude is amazing. But in my opinion you shouldn't rely on such clickbaity videos. Why not show a 10 minutes workflow videos with the tools you suggest instead of telling people what to do?

Basically I've been living in this wrong way for my entire life... I don't buy cars, seldom buying new clothes, but did buy a lot of POs and an OP1. Sorry if it bothered you, but it is me being me 😔
