We’re back with another episode of DORM SERIES! This year things look a little different as we take on at-home dorm room makeovers for students living off-campus, but don’t worry, our makeover tips and hacks are still on-campus dorm-friendly! This week we made over first-year student Andrea’s bedroom who needed more storage space, a bigger study area, and her bedroom to fit her cozy cottagecore boho aesthetic that has been taking over TikTok lately. She loves natural colours and textures, whimsical vibes, and wanted her room to feel like Grandma’s bedroom - but elevated. We brought all this along with some super cool DIYs like a tool-free gallery wall solution thanks to Command™ Brand, a peel-and-stick wallpaper accent wall moment, tons of affordable thrifted finds and a whole lot of lace & macrame! When you use a specific design style (cottagecore, boho) I would love a brief explanation of what that is at the beginning. I've never heard of cottagecore and felt like I had to piece it together on my own with clues from the video. It would be nice to have an idea from the beginning.
I googled it, I thought maybe it was something Canadian that had somehow completely evaded me. I'm not worried about not knowing about it because I figure if it's on TSG, they'll get it across. Okay, it's not going to be beyond me.

That lamp teetering on the stack of wobbly crates gave me mad anxiety the entire video. Love the reveal, but that whole corner situation stressed me out! Could have been another great ad opportunity to maybe use command strips to stick the crates together?

this wuz such a cute makeover but if im being honest i dont love the wallpaper //: i feel like it wouldve looked so much better with a more brown/neutral floral wallpaper!!! it jus felt a lil out of place but its still sooo cute!!!!

I like how this room came out except for those crates...totally didn't seem functional for a student's desk area. I think you guys could have thrfited/flea marketed a cute granny-esque end table with drawers or something. like clearly she needed lots of drawer storage.
At first I was like "meh, that's not my aesthetic," but DAMN the end result was so cozy. Maybe it IS my aesthetic. That room looked so comforting and relaxing. I love the gallery wall.

Helpful tips for recreating the dorm experience at home:
-Get a spare TV or music player. Put it in the next room, tuned to something you really hate and turned up loud. Now try to study or sleep.
-Ignore the fact you have a kitchen and try to make food with only a microwave and a hotplate at least once a day. If you know any 8-year-olds, take grocery suggestions from them.
-Store your laundry for a month before doing it. Then get your mom to do it all.
-Randomly throw away some of your possessions once in a while, and pouring out 1/4 to 1/2 of whatever groceries you bring home without using them to simulate having a roommate with no boundaries.

You see that's why I spent an arm and a leg on a single dorm room, tried a dorm with roomates for a month and ended up in the hospital because of sleep deprivation because one of my roommates would arrive drunk and giggling at 3 am everynight

I love it... If I were to model a room after my grandma's my hubby would move into the garage...lol Scarlet velvet curtains and matching bedspread, silver gray carpet, matching "sleigh bed style bed, dresser, side tables, and highboy in some really dark wood, with Tiffany-style lamps.... that woman had some seriously "bordello" taste...lol

That's pretty much the only part I didn't care for. She needs a lot more storange than that as evidenced by the plastic file crate they removed and I thought the chair was a little too large for the room.
I'm a college student who uses crates for storage and it works great for me! The key is textbooks on the bottom, and lighter stuff on top. It's served me well for last 4 years :)
I mean she still got storage in the trunk. so all the pretty stuff that‘s easily organized can go in the crates, everything else can go in the trunk.

There is no way that WASN'T planned Lol.
Speaking as a landlord, it’s so much easier covering up the holes from screws/raw plugs and nails than tacky tack or the cheap double sided tape that sometimes ruin big areas of the walls. That other landlords don’t get that is a wonder. Psychologically there is also a more careful placements of nails etc. when you have to look at the holes for the rest of your lease.
All of my landlords (now renting 4th place in 6 years) screwed a wooden lat/board high up on the wall and it only was allowed to screw/nail in there. That also saves the walls from stickiness and holes. You can hang anything you want using nails and fish thread or thin chains. The holes from the nails are so small that you don't even have to fill them when someone moves out. In my country we call the construction a "poster lat". I think it's a good solution.

lol command strips have ruined every wall I've ever used them on. get yourself some little picture nails and a container of spackle for when you move out. your dorm and/or landlord will never know.
Love EVERYTHING about this room except the wallpaper, the pattern looks a little cheap to me, but otherwise, AMAZING JOB ❤️

@@clairehunter5023 Trunks are okay for things you rarely use, but for office supplies that you need access to, it's inconvenient. Before she could open the drawers while seated at the desk. Now she has to get up from the chair, crouch down by the trunk, and dig through it for every item she needs.
Yeah but generally if you give people lots of storage space- they will use it. If you take some away they get better at using what they have. I did not need that much space for stationary all through my studies. You need one notebook, some pens, some sticky notes and a laptop.....
Primping the bed like that really made the room. The pillows, the throw, the fairy lights - really pulls it all together.

This reminds me of French cottage...pared down. Cottagecore is for mead 85 % of my home is thrifted and yes there is a canopy over my bed and I am 58 . This one of my top 3 favorite makeovers.

Hey, Tina! It’s always good to take some notes about what colors you like and to use that as inspiration. For example, I have a heavy wood desk that I could always paint white-to make it have that cottage feel.

Great upgrade! This room went from teen to adult. Love cottagecore, minus the mushroom requirement listed on your pinterest 10 requirements for cottagecore. Love the pillows added to the bed and the throw much more than a plaid throw and love the ivy hanging with the lace "veil" above the bed. Love the use of the colored cartons and the desk. Love the seat cushion and covering Becky chose. Think this room is so pretty it will be hard for her to concentrate on her work for a while. Great job ladies and CONGRATULATIONS! I’m new to like...caring about decorating and I’m so obsessed w cottage core. I guess that’s been my aesthetic the whole time. But also, I know it’s so ~trendy~ to do a gallery wall, but i love them so much !!
Not into cottage core (first time I've heard of it) but it looks pretty. Something I think that would help make the gallery walls look more professional is the spacing between the pictures/frames, less is more. Besides that, great makeover! 👍🏼
