  • In this video we go into depth on the legality of rainwater harvesting in Colorado. Can you only capture 110 gallons? Or is there a way to capture more legally? This screen capture walks you through the steps of how to find out if you qualify for a Rooftop Precipitation Collection System permit.
    Anyone building an Earthship in Colorado has to watch this! More videos on rainwater harvesting to come!

    And if you don't qualify for a well. It states you can use the water for a pool, hot tub, etc. So you have additional storage put a couple fish in there and call it a fish farm.

    Thanks for the info. I just bought 7 acres of raw land near Hartsel(Park County) and want to use this method. You just saved me! Thanks so much!

    I just bought some land in Huerfano. 3 acres. It is residential but off grid. Will not drill a well. Do I have to build a "home" to get this permit? I was just going to build a shed . Can I collect off of the shed? I was thinking of getting one of those large plastic tanks for a cistern. Should I put in for the permit?

      Nice! Congrats! I think it's allowed only for your primary residence so I don't think shed's count... I could be wrong but it'd be worth checking. I do know you can get this permit before your house is actually constructed. I think you should go for it!

    For those living in an earth ship in Colorado, how do you collect ice build from the roof?; on a two story residence, the top falls heavy on the lower roof in an area where we would like to insert sky lights. How would you direct the snow/ice in a lightly heated way to collect the melt and keep it from falling where we want to modify the house? This building is not an earthship, though it is built of cinder blocks, Need to collect water to prevent desertification.

      If you look into the Earthship Encounter model it has a slightly sloped mono pitch roof that sheds to the south... I think in new construction or design that's the best passive way to melt the snow because the sun will always melt...

    Can you acquire permits without acreage?

    • @OwnerBuildersUnite
      @OwnerBuildersUnite  Před 11 měsíci

      In colorado you can capture 110 gallons without a permit and then unlimited if you have the permit... the only thing is your land has to not be able to hook up to a water municipality. So as long as you're off the grid or in a spot where the water tap isn't by you it's possible... don't think acreage has anything to do with it from my understanding. Hope that helps

    Why is it illegal to capture water that falls from the sky?

  • @eliinthewolverinestate6729

    Didn't think I would need a cistern. I have a flowing point well but build site is on ridge. So thinking till I can afford a real well. Gonna use gas water pump to pump to cistern. Which means keeping it from freezing. No, it is not illegal to collect rainwater in Michigan. The state actually encourages citizens and businesses to collect rainwater to reduce costs and strain on public resources. Some cities offer rebates and other incentives for doing so.

    And so dies the dream of off grid living in western Colorado. Household use but no garden, livestock, permaculture.... Maybe an extra 3000 Sq ft of roof....

      Yeah hopefully the state changes that sometime... rules are also meant to be broken!

    What a crock of BS. I love Colorado and lived for 6 years, but I’ll never move back because of these over reaching and ridiculous laws on the books. Oklahoma might not be as pretty but at least we live a little bit more free. All state and local governments are over reaching so it’s really just which have the least and which fit your applications.

      Yeah the over reach sucks... Happy that I qualify to catch water and just wanted to let others know too... it's certainly not broadcasted even though there's some paperwork.
