My grandpa passed away last night. He was 85 and a military veteran, he served for 37 years. My mom introduced this song to him because she's also in the military.
I even remember my grandpa texting me one night before they visit in our house the next morning saying "I want to hear Country Roads playing or else I'm never stepping in your door" but then I forgot to play it, and he was really just outside, I approached and asked why isn't he coming in, that's when I remembered. And yes people my grandpa is the biggest baby ever. Kidding aside, we can definitely say he became the absolute best dad and grandpa for the last 23 years of his life after fighting for our country's freedom. He filled the times when he couldn't be here with nothing but love and joy.
I just wish you could've lived longer. But for 85 years of being one of God's best creation, My only wish now is that you keep flying high. I'm going to miss you! I'll see you soon grandpa! But for now let me make you proud! I love you, so much.

My grandfather grew up in West Virginia. He was the eldest of twelve children and when his father passed he had to drop out of school at age thirteen and take his father's place working in the coal mines. No electricity, no running water, West Virginia was really a place out of time. Eventually he made it out with my grandmother and moved to Maryland, but this song still reminds me of him. Rest in peace pop-pop.
