  • We went to the North Korean border with China, and discuss why it's so easy to disappear, get arrested, or worse in this area. This was a very nerve wracking experience, but we are glad we managed to get some good footage there.

    At the top of the building at 26:02 it lists educational goals/virtues.
    AKATT별 explains it well in the comments below, quote:
    "지덕체, which is an abbreviation for "지육, 덕육, 체육": intellectual education, moral education and physical education."
    Thanks to MoMo 모모 for correcting the sentence below that, which reads:
    "경애하는 김정은장군님의 참된 아들딸이되자!"
    "Let's become faithful sons and daughters of (our) dear general Kim Jong-Un!"
    So yes, this appears to be a school. The vertical banner in front of said building reads:
    "Let's learn for Korea!"
    "조선을 위하여 배우자!"
    The building at 28:36 reads:
    "조선은 결심하면 한다!"
    Which sort of translates to
    "We (Korea) can do whatever we are determined to do!"
    You're very welcome. Keep up the good work.

      Asian written language is both bizarre and interesting.. I would presume the characters are "conceptual"... It must be really difficult to read and write in any of the Asian languages, because those characters er symbols are pretty complex... I mean obviously in English if you hear a word you can usually just spell it because English is a phonetic language, but if these characters are conceptual then you would have to memorize all of them, not only that but it must be difficult trying to explain abstract ideas via character format.

It really shows how lucky that people are who do not have to deal with strict, ruthless governments. As greedy and destructive as the western type of policies are, it is still much better than having ones life threatened for almost nothing and having to endure crushing poverty.

    Guys I am a China scholar, I have been dragged through my studies of Xi Jinping, through hundreds of slogans that I have had to look up. One time I found China-daily giving a "quote" to Xi Jinping. But that was an adaptation of a quote by Hu Jitao, that was a version of a quote by Jiang Zemin, that quoted Deng Xiaoping, that quoted Mao Zedong, who were quoting Stalin, that was contributing it to a comrade named Ivan.
    I have been going trough more than 150 years of Chinese and Russian slogans.

      @@jeffprice6421, it's a relief to realize that these people never come up with anything original. The whole point of Communist propaganda is not to guide or to educate but to insult the intelligence of the listener, so that he will stop thinking, in fear that he would need to disagree about everything and end up totally, existentially isolated. The purpose of the slogans is to create a kind of alternative reality. Or rather unreality. There are two alternatives to this that I know of. One is to openly and knowingly vie for materialistic pleasure and success in the Western fashion. Another is some kind of Aristotelian or medieval Christian metaphysical worldview.

    • @seriouscat2231
      @seriouscat2231 Před 2 lety

      When seeing Communist slogans, a Western mind often thinks of them as kind of instructions. "You are supposed to start with these principles and then knowingly and willingly implement them as an individual." In reality, a Communist citizen is supposed to do what he is told to do, but in his mind he is supposed to rationalize and interpret his actions as stated in the slogan. "By scrubbing this toilet I am building an utopia and a millennial peace under the guidance of our wonderful leader." The end result is that you will scrub toilets until for some reason or other you drop dead.

      Spot on 100%. I remember going to Corfu years ago as a kid on vacation with my parents. The hotel we stopped in our room and balcony faces east to the Albanian western coastline. which in 1988 was still under strict communist regime. The Irish guy who was stopping next door to us had really powerful Ex military binoculars and he said to my dad one night talking over the Balconies on the top floor, to look at the western coastline which he did and we could see Communist Albanian soldiers patrolling the beach, fully armed. And same as your view we could see lights coming from the shore line, but nothing else. No bars open, no hotels no people nothing but a military presence and that was it.

      6-7 years ago we drove with my family through europe in a roadtrip. We knew we had to drive through Albania and weren't all that happy about it. We timed our drive so we could drive non-stop. Everywhere we looked we saw mercedes-benzes, i started counting them and soon i had to stop because i hit 50 and it was the first city and only half an hour in or something. Yet, no one seemed to be working, the sides of road in the city were filled with groups of men looking at us weirdly, we really didn't feel safe at any point. Plus the roads were just terrible.

      @4623620 Před 2 lety +1

      @@alaric_ Have you seen any cars owned by people who are too poor to afford one, like high up in the mountains ?
      By the way, many of these cars are second-hand, imported from "rich countries", I personally knew men who buy cars with damage (due to an accident or something similar) in, for example, Germany or the Netherlands and then export them to "poor countries" as "scrap", there they are refurbished and sold.
      When over there I was offered a Mercedes (!) on loan, it was owned by the man who's apartment I rented, normally he used it to transport guests from and to a little airport nearby, after some inspection I refrained from this offer, the vehicle seemed reliable nor safe.
      Instead I rented a "Yugo" from Avis (Fiat licensed build), it was brought over from way up north and stupid enough left outside on a parking lot the night before it was handed over to me, the next morning when I collected it, chrome parts, hubcaps, mirrors, wind-shield wipers etc. were all gone (in those regions people tend to hide their cars in a garage or barn against this), luckily it was still reliable and someone from Avis came over with a spare wiper.
      I've seen many cars driving around without wind-shield wipers, only when it became really impossible to drive without one (and only one !) was installed temporarily (when not needed it was stored in the glove compartment (which I did too), the other was as spare part at home hidden in a safe place).
      Note, I'm talking thirty years or more ago. :-)
