10:43 the crew on the roof of the train was filling up water for the toilet. The water are stored in the water tank on the train roof so the water can flow with gravity to the toilet and the tap.
16:25 That's rigid catenary. The reason why the Yogyakarta station use rigid catenary is because the limited space due to the roof of the platform.
Anyway, congrats for the experience of the train. Well done video as expected.

The way you pronounce "Indomaret, Gondangdia,Jatinegara, manggarai" is on point 🌹
Yes it is rare to have a foreigner that actually capable of learning how to pronounce things correctly, rather than just cower behind "I'm sorry I may have butchered the name"..
yeah but he says it so aggresively it would be better off to not try doing it
or better yet he can try to adjust how to say it
in fact it kind of sounds japanese
I understand that his pronunciation is better than the average foreigner, but it's an overstatement to say that it's "on point."

a more fitting comparison would be plane ticket prices... this train ticket costs slightly above budget airline prices (Jakarta-Jogja route). Sure, the plane seats are less comfortable, but it's only an hour travel time. Unless you have special medical conditions, there's no real reason to take this train over a plane.

"BIMA's compartment suites", you mean Indonesia's Nightjet?
@@Charlizzie yes it has similar color like the Nightjet but if you search up Indonesian railway history, the Bima train it self was a sleeper train in 60s and it was not just 1 car its a whole train just like Nightjet with blue color inspired from sleeper train on another country, and the Bima train it self was a reborn version of high end class train the Java Nacht Express in 30s under the Staatsspoorwegen (a Dutch East Indies state own company) management. But the sleeper service was ended in 80s and replaced with ordinary executive class, so now they tried to bring back the OG Bima with this compartment suites and yes they also couple it with day train service the Argo Semeru
so its not just a copycat, it has its own history.
@@Charlizzie why do you call every sleeper train a nightjet?
13:17,,, a lil bit of correction here… Indonesian didnt get to choose the narrow gauge of 1067. It was decided by the Dutch East Indies government.😅
Thus the standard stays until today, some newer train line in Sulawesi already use wider gauge.
Actually there are different Dutch companies. Some chose 1435, others chose 1067. It was the Japanese that decided to remove all the 1435 tracks (and transferred it to somewhere else in SE Asia), leaving 1067 tracks for utility

Trains are named after figures mentioned in the video:
10:12 Ciremai, travels from Semarang Tawang (recently added Bank Jateng for sponsorship reason) via Cirebon - Cikampek route to Bandung (hall) station, in executive and new image economy class.
15:02 Serayu, travels from Purwokerto to (Jakarta) Pasar Senen, but instead via Cirebon, they are travel via Kroya - Bandung - Cikampek line with 106 seats of economy class (we like to called it knee battling seats or kursi adu dengkul). The reason of these seats are because serayu (and several full 106 seats economy class) is subsidized by indonesian government.
These trains are very worthy to travel with it, especially morning Ciremai journey, because you can enjoy sea and mountain sceneries in one trip. Thanks for the honest review about our national railway!

I lived in Java, Indonesia for 8 years and first made the train trip you document in 1971. It was not luxurious then and took longer, arriving in the middle of the night. Certainly better now. Great video. Thanks.
Wow!
Everything has been said by the other commenters, so I just want to comment on how much I appreciate your attempt at pronouncing all those Indonesian names the right way when you don’t speak the language. You even know how to pronounce the C’s as “ch”; pronounce some of the E’s as schwa; and roll the R’s, not even people from neighboring Malaysia know how to do these. You must have done a great deal of research for this video. 👍 As a bonus, you even pronounce the name “Yogyakarta” the proper way when most of us Indonesians would just say “Jogja” instead 😁
BTW apparently “Dwipangga” means “two mountains” and this refers to the two iconic volcanoes of Merapi and Merbabu in the region.
We can say "Yogyakarta".
"Jogja" is just faster to say.
Nice one! Indonesia is sometimes overlooked, but the country seemed very clean and modern, and the scenery was spectacular. I really liked the bright green architecture of Stasiun Gambir.
That why they are called silent giants. A big country with Economy level to make them become the member of the top G20, the powerhouse of Southeast Asia, but they never involved themself to outside political business. Make them invisible and overlooked.
@@Ilyas-ty6cy tbh you can only call yourself a powerhouse when your gdp per capita is at least above 40,000$.

The stations around Copenhagen central also has a rail instead of a overhead wire , because of the intense traffic
Interesting, thanks for sharing. :)
Interesting concept. I think we can use that concept here in the Netherlands as well.
10:40 Those worker on top are most likely just refilling the water tank used for the toilets.
Oh wow, worker safety is not much of a priority is it? Where I'm from, water is filled from the ground level, using a pressured water hose (and not at a station stop but at the yard).
@@mattiasthorslund6467The new generation of Argo Dwipangga was released a month ago, can be refilled from the bottom. There's a hose on each end of carriages.
@@mattiasthorslund6467ok first of all, they are safety harness for the staff on top the train refueling the water.
Second, the train always fill at the train yard before departure but because every intercity trainset at least Cary 400 to 500 passengers, the toilet water have to be checked every 2 hrs so the toilet water didn't get empty.
Third, don't make ridiculous statement that the staff didn't get safety priority if you didn't know how actuality irl.
Thanks!
@@mattiasthorslund6467they use harness, and the pathway there is large enough. In the old days passanger without ticket ussually snuck up there. Pouring water from top is more easy than pressure from down, and they only have 12 min to fullfil those tanks. They fill it pararelly 4 to 5 carriage one go. Remember this is a long distances on schedule train.

Finally! I’ve been waiting for your Indonesian series, even though our current train service isn’t perfect, cause we’re still a developing nation, but we’re super grateful for the drastic and better changes throughout the years. Please try the compartment suites train as well, that’s the brand new flagship luxury train in Indonesia. Enjoy your trip! Greetings from Yogyakarta
Thanks! I have a Bima video coming too! :)
Great trip. Finally your Indonesian adventure is uploaded. The naming scheme in Indonesian Train is unique, and have many references, like Volcano/Mountain, Mythical Animals, Flower, Cities, Historical Kingdom, Temple, And many more. For Kereta Api, yes it's reference coming from Steam Train, but in current time which majority of Indonesian Train using Diesel, in some cases you can still see some Fire coming from locomotive. Looks like it's a sweet snack on the lounge, and yeah for the soft one it's nearly out of stock. For the seating, it's great, and correct me If I wrong, in the past this train labelled as Sleeper Train by Media. Jakarta Metropolitan Area is massive, but it easy to identified, just find where the last time you watched Commuter Line, because Jakarta Metropolitan Area is connected by Commuter Line, and speaking of Commuter Line, the Gondangdia Station is the closest one to Gambir if you want to visit this station. For Train tracking, I prefer using Google Maps rather than on board Entertainment or even Access App, as long as there's power sockets in my seat. Can't wait for your another train adventure in Indonesia, especially the Sri Tanjung one

Wow - this was a great travel! Really unique country with amazing landscape!
Nice to see you back again
Very interesting video. I’ve travelled a lot on Indonesian trains and mostly found them very good. The main drawback is the limited timetable, presumably because of limited track and platform capacity. So there’s still a need for more investment in the network, much of which still dates from Dutch colonial times. On board catering is also in need of significant upgrading - not, surely, that difficult in a country that has a great culinary tradition.
Thanks, I agree, they need more infrastructure!
Onboard catering has been plaguing our trains since forever. If you’ve seen the dining car, there’s nothing there beyond cup noodles and microwaved meals. Believe it or not, this is actually an improvement from what it was before 😂
Locals like me prefer to bring our own food that we buy from the station we depart from and Indonesian Railways Company are okay with it. I wonder why they haven’t invested in a better dining options because I’d definitely buy my meals onboard if the options are not as limited as it is now.
Read that Japan has won a contract to upgrade the normal speed tracks between Jakarta-Bandung

3:35 Fun fact: KAI buys a lot of retired Japanese trainsets for their commuter services in Jakarta because the network consists of 1067mm rail gauge and 1500V DC electrification, which is the same as a large portion of railway lines in Japan.
That's why you'll see some famous trainsets like the JNR/JR East 205-0 series (from Yamanote Line and Saikyo Line), Tokyu 8000 series (from Tokyu Toyoko Line and Oimachi Line), as well as TRTA/Tokyo Metro 6000 series (from Chiyoda Line) running in Jakarta.
And KAI retained a lot of markings in Japanese with only the essential systems being labelled in Indonesian language.
For example, you'll see a P|SN mark on the side of a 205-0 series, which stands for the trainset is equipped with ATS-P (protection by both wayside colour light signals and brake curve calculated by onboard transponder) and ATS-SN (roughly equivalent to Network Rail AWS) train protection systems during their original service in Japan.
Also read of a story where a Tokyo commuter misplaced his spectacles on a subway train, but after the train was donated to Jakarta, a commuter there found the spectacles & sent it back to the Tokyo commuter
Congrats on 100k!!
You have a best review videos dude ! So much knowledge's you've explained 👍👍👍
The attendant standing on the roof of the train is filling water for the toilets, they do this to ensure the toilets don't run out of water.
Argo means mountain, but in the context of the train the word Argo was chosen to symbolise a peak / highest caste. Dwipangga is indeed derived from the name of a legendary elephant, the location of this elephant is on the Gajahwonh River and this river passes east of Yogyakarta Station. So indeed the name Argo Dwipangga sounds meaningless at first glance, but if studied further Argo Dwipangga means the Highest Caste Train to Yogyakarta.
In addition to DwiPangga, every train with the name Argo is always followed by the name of a mountain in the area around the railway line. For example, Argo Pharayangan to Bandung in the Bandung area there is Mount Pharayangan, and Argo Bromo to Surabaya in the south of Surabaya there is Mount Bromo.
Thank you!

Wow I'm impressed with your knowledge about Indonesian Railways you did great research, good job!
Greeting from Indonesian Railfans.
Welcome back! And congratulations on reaching 100K subscribers. This calls for a little celebration. 🥳
Now back on topic - KAI Executive product, IMO, is superior to what you get in Business Class (in an aeroplane), though they were expensive. I'm not sure why "Elephant Mountain" is the name of this train (which makes no sense), but I know that KAI has a consistent naming scheme for its luxury train services. Indonesians are vocal about trains (and that's evident in the introduction of the Whoosh HSR service). Hence, people use them to get to their destinations. Hence, Gambir is so small in Indonesian long-distance standards. The new and improved Manggarai station can't come soon enough.
Thanks! 😅
Yea, that food is really crappy for what the tickets worth ngl. The foods you can order are decent enough tho.
16:08 .....and there's Taksaka, the golden goose (ish, the highest occupancy of executive class+) who take the naming convention, beat it to a pulp, and throw it out the window.
you have such deep research! amazing
Answer to your question about the solid overhead wire, I’ve seen it used on metro systems in Buenos Aires & Madrid! It’s known as Rigid Overhead catenary system. Used in restricted height areas. If you notice in your clip the solid wire runs under the station canopy, so that’s the reason ( you’d think they would have just altered the canopy height.) Excellent video as always

Overhead rails are used in low clearance situations. The pantograph of an electric train has to exert quite a bit of upward pressure on the wires to maintain constant contact, this causes them to flex up. The overhead rails solve this, the wire is still there, it's just embedded in the bottom of the rail. The rail serves as a guide preventing the wire from flexing or moving.
In low clearance situations where the contact wire needs to be physically closer to the train and the pantograph needs to compress, overhead rails are used for their increased rigidity and strength, forcing the pantograph springs to compress while maintaining constant contact.
The reason why they're not used more widely is since they are physically larger and denser than the wires, they causes increased electrical impedance which can cause a decrease in current, voltage, or both.
Yeah I read that at higher voltages like 25kV there might be problems due to overhead rails being thicker than wires. However they are more rigid & less likely to loosen/break/get entangled with pantographs & other things
Love your work!
Thank you! 😁

@@SuperalbsTravels Jakarta = / juh-kaar-tuh/.
Roll the /r/ the way you would say 'arigatou'.
16:25 overhead rails are favourable to power lines because they're more durable, though they're usually reserved for tunnelled sections (MRT Jakarta, Sofia Metro's newest line) to minimise exposure to the elements, which could cause the rails to expand in hotter environments.
They're there to power the commuter trains between Yogyakarta, Solo, and a few intermediate stops
