    I had the same feeling as Garnt. At some point "Jokes" just became "Memes".

    • @SNixD
      @SNixD Před 9 měsíci +18

      It's because people didn't understand the concept of what a meme was. They just saw things that were called memes, found them to be funny and then the actual meaning was lost.

    • @neociber24
      @neociber24 Před 9 měsíci +8

      Anything referential is now a meme, a joke is another thing right now

    • @thsudy
      @thsudy Před 9 měsíci +3

      Same. I don’t remember when videos went from being called “funny videos” to “funny memes or meme compilations”

    • @iantaakalla8180
      @iantaakalla8180 Před 8 měsíci

      I mean, if a meme is niche enough, then it can be an actual meme as opposed to “a joke widely spread amidst online communities” which still technically fits the original thing of meme even though a niche joke being mainstreamed fits a meme even better, as a random idea that made it.

    I side with pete taking back meme culture and making them make some fking sense.
    Being down bad as a gambling term makes perfect sense.

    • @iantaakalla8180
      @iantaakalla8180 Před 8 měsíci +5

      The sad fact is that since being down bad for gambling makes sense in the slang term for it, being “down bad” can switch meanings to a euphemism for addiction and that would be scary when those meanings overlap.

    I remember being in my first 2 years of college when I first heard anyone refer to a meme as anything other than a rage comic/advice animal type thing (outside it’s etymology) so like late 2014 to early 2016 was some kind of tipping point. And this was on imgur and I remember the majority ~80% of comments also were saying “this isn’t a meme” so it wasn’t just me.
    I totally understand the Kony2012 thing because it was a US election year and that’s the format things like bumper stickers would have to promote a candidate here. Lastname(s)year

      Imagine that they tried that now and they spouted phrases like “I have no enemies. Hug me, brother!” and “Lost to this monster, to the man behind the slaughter” as opposed to “Darmak and Jalad and Tanagra!”

  • @JeedyJay
    @JeedyJay Před 9 měsíci +4

    "Pwned" and some of those other misspelling-based bits have origins that immediately make sense when you look at the adjacent keys on a QWERTY keyboard. "Booba" is a more recent example.

    bricked up has 2 meanings tho. it can also mean to be really down, distressed etc.
    like: "my PC catching fire and dying on me yesterday got me all bricked up"
    there are 2 competing use cases basically. being erect or being down... neither of which of course would have been appropriate in the scenarios he used it 🤣

    Napster was great. Back then it was a music bartering plattform. It worked because in the past Germans had way more freedoms and rights than nowadays.
    For example: Every owner of a music volume, was allowed to create copies of it for him or for use in his close social environment (=friends and family). In praxis this meant 5 copies for friends and family were allowed and unlimited amuounts of security copies.
    The law was crafted before digital music. And every empty medium(and recording device, even printers) sold in Germany contains an extra fee that goes to the organization of creators.
    When the Frauenhofer-Institute published the MP3 file format Napster and the (dialup 56k) internet realy took off in Germany, everyone bartered their music on napster and it was impossible to do anything about it as, you kinda would have to proof that someone made more than 5 private copies of a song...plus song compilations burned on CD were shared in schools... And law, politicians and even the music industry didn't know how the internet worked...lol
