How to Cell Reference in Excel

  • In this step-by-step tutorial video, learn about when to use a relative cell reference and when to use an absolute cell reference.
    Access the sheet that I used in this video here: 1drv.ms/x/s!AmxrofZZlZ-whIZ5C...
    By default, a cell reference is a relative reference in Excel. This means that the reference is relative to the location of the cell. If, for example, you refer to cell A2 from cell C2, you are actually referring to a cell that is two columns to the left (C minus A)-in the same row (2). When you copy a formula that contains a relative cell reference, that reference in the formula will change.
    Less often, you may want to mixed absolute and relative cell references by preceding either the column or the row value with a dollar sign-which fixes either the column or the row (for example, $B4 or C$4).
    To change the type of cell reference: Select the cell that contains the formula. In the formula bar Button image , select the reference that you want to change. Press F4 to switch between the reference types.

    Thanks a lot, mate, I've been working with Excel sheets and I'm a programmer that has no idea how things work in Excel, but instead of working right away, I've decided to learn a few fundamental knowledge about excel to be able to understand what I'm doing.. this saves a lot of time.. thanks again

    I'm playing WoW and I'm collecting herbs to make potions. After I level up a few rungs, some of the potions are too weak for me but I'm still collecting the herbs. I figured I could always sell the weaker potions and get a little extra cash as I quest. Then I realized that sometime it would be much better to sell the herbs rather than make the potions and sell them. So as I set up my spreadsheet to help me decide whether to sell the herbs or the potions, I realized I had a problem. I started the sheet with about 12 herbs all listed in alphabetical order to make it easier to find their costs and profits, but then I'd find new herbs and added them to my growing list. When I used the sort feature to keep the herbs in order, the prices and profits didn't follow the alphabetization. I figure I have to make absolute references in some columns or rows to keep everything hunky-dory. I'm sure fast food places like MacDonalds and Dairy Queen have a similar problem when they add items to their menu and they want to know what's profitable and what's not so profitable. I'm going to your next video on how to filter to see if that will help.

      @Keyce0013 Před rokem

      You could probably achieve similar results if you highlighted all of the relevant cells (herbs, costs, & profit) and then went to Home -> Format as Table. The columns have built-in sorting capability so you can add new herbs, sort them alphabetically, and have their prices shifted within the table to match!

    Hi, thanks for all the great excel training videos.
    I recorded a macro to execute formatting I apply to a report I recieve multiple times a day. One of the formatting I apply is insert table, but the macro fails to input the table because the # of rows for each report vary - sometimes it's more or less. How can I write the macro so the code updates to the relative # of rows? Thanks.
