  • Thanks to a question in a comment I recently received, I was inspired to make this sewing video all about ease in vintage sewing. I explain what ease is and the different types of ease and how it effects sewing. I also discuss choosing the right pattern size and why we shouldn't remove wearing ease from a pattern. All of this information is directly gleaned from vintage sewing books that you can access for free from openlibrary.com. So come along as we explore what writers of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s say about ease and how it factors into vintage sewing!

Most of my ready to wear clothes are either jersey skirts and ts or, if woven, loose flowy empire waist dresses. I like to sew 40s style attire, I learned that a well fitted garment WITH proper ease is very comfortable. I'm now a fan of making mockups to achieve proper fit that maintains a sleeker style line.

Thank you for this! One thing that confused me recently was when I made a vintage pair of tailored shorts for my daughter (1950’s). We had to take 6” in from the back. The back only! Maybe the ease was assuming a curvier bottom? The waistband and front were perfect and her hips were the correct measurements for the pattern!

Oh my yes! Shorts and pants are so hard to fit!

I feel like the modern patterns have so much ease that I have to make a smaller size than my measurements would suggest in order for the garment to fit me properly. However true vintage patterns always fit well.

I often buy them online at etsy.com and I've heard ebay.com sells them too.
