Honestly... You inspire me so much. I've grown up pretty poor.. and I wanted to go to school for design.. I couldn't afford it. So I went on scholarship for biz. I opened a wedding planning company called A Modern Romance. Slowly I started making money to buy nicely made clothes... And I wasn't satisfied. Then I came across your Chanel and I am so happy to say I've started buying my own fabrics. I've bought a couple of your flats. Thank you honestly so much from the bottom of my heart for making it possible to learn all of this with out giving corporate America my money!

I'm poor I lost everything 9/11 .and can't even afford to give my grandkids a gift. With my STIMULUS CHECK I bought a sewing machine I wanted to help make face coverings for doctors nurses they said they were in such need. Now since that's over I got this sewing machine n want to learn. I can make my brands a gift now. I'm so excited I want to be the best at sewing. Good luck on your cloths making

@@hebakhan6581 If you don’t have an estate plan, and you don’t think you can afford one, there are a lot of free services available online which can give you the information you need to start building your own until you can afford to hire an attorney. If you live in Virginia, my office will set up a free consultation with you via videoconference and you can find out what you need. If you are careful enough to follow a pattern and make a garment, you can write your own will and fill out your own medical power of attorney. It’s not as hard as it looks.
We are a large scale textile Manufacturer from India, and believe me when I tell you this - this lady is Bang on with the knowledge she shared. She hooked me up the moment she said "silk is not a fabric", I am often teaching the same things to my American customers. From next time I'll simply just forward the link to this video.

So actually I didn’t go through with it because although I do love fashion I just wasn’t passionate enough to dedicate myself to it… I ended up working to become an esthetician / permanent makeup artist because makeup is my real drive 🙂🤍 Sorry this wasn’t the expected response but it’s still totally possible! You just have to love it enough. I didn’t know many things about makeup and I continue to learn daily!

I loved flying to the mills in North Carolina and doing the print approvals. I especially loved buying from the jobbers when I started my first clothing business! You’re right about those bargains! Nothing like getting a giant pile of gorgeous fabrics for a song!!!!
There is definitely a special language and when you understand this and know this language and understand Fabric your picker gets better and better! I have a little book that I made when I was going for my degree for fashion at Parsons school of design that I referred to from time to time. Sometimes I forget when I’m shopping online. There’s so many types of fabric!
Just knowing the difference between a filament and a staple can make a huge difference when buying anything like sheets for your home! Nothing worse than fuzzy sheets after a few washes and seeing all those nasty staples!
And nothing better than a long filament beautifully high twisted fiber sound of a pop Fabric! 👂🍾.
Being out here in the middle of nowhere in Arizona doing my decadent digs has definitely been challenging in the fabric department. Nothing worse than creating a line and not being able to get the fabric again or having to wait three or four months and missing your ship date because it got tied up at the mill. I have a whole giant shop full of fabric from leftover jobs. When you get a put up and there is residual fabric it’s hard to let it go. Sometimes I just use it as muslin. Hi Zoe..... I don't understand what you meant by low weight and top weight.....
I just used the back of a fabric for a skirt for someone (I do design and sewing from home, not going to school for it since I like historical clothing recreation) and it was absolutely amazing sometimes the back is perfect!

I’m back at garment construction after a 31 year hiatus making quilts and have recently subscribed to THREADS Magazine where in their Spring 2023 edition I met you on page 78! I have the attention span of a hungry five year old, but this 30+ minute vid on FABRIC was the most interesting thing I’ve watched all year. Thank you so much for making this video. There are quite a few of us just getting started, either as a hobby or a new business venture that have no formal training or experience in this field. Most women gained at least a rudimentary knowledge of such things during their school years and home training, while the guys were learning to fix the car and such. Glad to have the resource you are providing so we can more easily pursue the many types of sewing that are so relaxing and enjoyable during our retirement years.

0:23 The problem is when you don't live in an english speaking country but only learn things in english... I only get to know the terms in English, and conversations with sales reps end up being really confusing and awkward 😅😆
Hi Zoe! I did get some of the textile books you recommended previously, however, there is nothing like when YOU break down this information in the way you do! I have a couple of question: 1) What developments in textile/fabric making industry are you most excited to see? Any developments to watch out for? 2) When working with sample makers, are you typically contractually obligated to put in a bulk order after sample approval? In other words, do sample makers always expect that you manufacture with them? Is there a limit to how many times you can go to a sample maker without ordering in bulk or are they happy to take your business? Typically... Happy Holidays! :)
1. Have you seen the documentary The Next Black? The whole thing is on youtube. Go look for it. It's amazing. Other than all the cool stuff in that video, Adidas did this thing where they scooped up plastic floating in the ocean and recycled the plastic into new shoes. Incredible. Scientists are trying reproduce the way spiders spin their silk because it's so lightweight yet strong.
2. Depends on the facility and the contract. Some people only do samples. Some production facilities only do bulk--you have to bring them a sew-by sample, they provide you with a TOP but they don't do development. Make sure your contract says you're not beholden to run production with them. It happens sometimes that pieces from a line get dropped or stuff doesn't sell. Most don't care as long as you pay your bills on time. Of course, they will try to get your business in all other aspects too.

I'm really interested in sustainability and fair trade and here's hoping one day these developments will become the norm...2) I am sure the market is big enough to accommodate for all types of businesses, just gotta find the right suppliers... 3) How about feathers? Do you typically buy feathers separately and have them sewn in? Or do they come ready in rolls or pieces? What do you prefer?
3) I've never worked with feathers by themselves before. I only ever worked with fabric that had feathers that were already part of the fabric. Individually sewing in feathers would be very expensive.

I love this so much. I wanted to take in some old clothes so my mum gave me her old sewing machine. It's 30 years old and came without a pedal but now it's up and running and every time I look at it I'm reminded of how my mum used to make literally EVERYTHING. The level of creativity with textiles is endless.

I'm amazed at your knowledge Zoe. I'm an intermittant hand and machine leather handbag sewer and am trying to explore the possibilities of combining leather and fabric but know nothing about fabric. Belay that I KNEW nothing about fabric. I know a lot more now. Thank you.
