- Close-up Photography is a great way to get even more photographs out of the landscape. But I've not been totally happy with my results, or the opportunities I have missed
I have often felt out in the field that I could do so much more if. The light was better, not so harsh, coming from a different direction, and the background wasn't so messy.
There is a low-cost way to make all of these things possible, get some reflectors and diffusers. I purchased an inexpensive set from Small Rig. Find out how I get on.

A little bit of fill to separate the subject from the background can be magical!

A couple of reflector tips…
1. Don’t forget they can bend, so sometimes it is useful to bend the reflector and ‘curve’ the light around your subject for more ‘spread.’
2. Think of a diffuser like a soft box. It can be used to make the sun a larger light source in relation to your subject and thus making the like ‘softer’ (inverse square law).

Just watched this video and it's marvellous too see you trying different techniques, I did think for the last image maybe the black background may have served better with that white flower . But either way , wonderful images Brian, thank you.
Thank you. Its good try different things and mix it up a bit. You could be right. But my go to softer rathern than higher contrast photographs. Maybe in my pursuit of trying new things that’s something to consider next time.
Clean Close up photography is not easy. To start you have to search for a subject with a complimentary background. I like the fact you tried a few ideas with the reflector. It looks a good size and with the different options.
I use a smaller one than that as a spotlight. I’ve always thought the gold reflector is a bit too much but certainly the plain white work well as a fill on sunny contrasty days.
Regarding the subject moving in the wind which is always annoying. When do we ever get still air in the south west?
I’ve started using a clamp called a Wimberley Plamp. The clamps onto a tripod leg than has a flexible arm to gently clamp onto the stem of a flower. From practice it needs to clamp onto a separate tripod. You may of heard of it.
Getting clean uncluttered backgrounds in the field is a bit of a faff using wide apertures and focus stacking but you can get great results. Fungi is a good subject this time of year when you’re working in the shade.

Thanks for all the tips. I am. aware of the Plamp. But to be honest had forgotten about them. Maybe I will look in the future. Im trying to not continously add to the kit that I carry, Making video’s I allready carry 2 tripods!, and my vlogging camera, mic etc so it gets a bit much. But if I find I am spending a lot of time with close up photography it will probably find its way into my kit.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Hi Brian, I totally understand about the amount of kit. I forget you are carrying all the video gear. Do you ever go out and just concentrate on your photography without the pressure of making a CZcams video. I admire that you make a big effort.
@@MrTwogiantscoops No Never! But Its not all film, film, film, I normaly shoot the image first then film. The photography does come first, but I wouldnt have time to go out and just shoot, and not CZcams at the same time, just couldnt fit it all in. Maybe If I get away for a photograhy trip I can split it 50/50
