I pray someone told them the origin of this song they found themselves innately able to feel as they show through their movement/voices.

A great tone from the singers, but the tempo is far too fast. This should be taken slowly, around 85-90bpm. This is an American Slave Spiritual and the performance should reflect the laborious and burdened nature of its origins. Related to that, while the diction in this performance is impeccable in the traditional sense, Slave Spirituals ought to be sung using dialect (close to the m in trimmed, the should sound like duh, children should sound more like chil'ren, etc).

I have directed this song before...the tempo is not "far too fast"...it is a bit rushed. I understand your view regarding the lyrics, but for them to imitate the precise dialect might come off as mocking, rather than paying tribute to the history of this wonderful song.

@@robertgalbreath6239 I am the commenter from above, and my viewpoint comes from having been taught how to conduct and teach this song by Andre Thomas himself. You are certainly correct that over-exaggerated dialect could be considered mocking, but there are easy ways to ensure the audience is informed prior to performance as well.

@@RHSChoirsSD nevertheless, it is written in cut time, leading me to believe that he originally preferred it moderately, not slowly.

It always amazes and saddens me when people are so stuck in one methodology and/or tempo and/or dynamic treatment, etc. that they think all others somehow 'wrong'. There is no right or wrong in music folks, it is ALWAYS open to musical interpretation. It slays when people are often so locked into one mode of playing some classical piece, whereas the likelihood from that time is that it was interpreted radically differently quite often. You can frequently hear this in homages given/themes taken by other composers who then 'ran with them'. Just sayin'. Thank god covers are not done that way, because you would never get things like this:
      czcams.com/video/4RS5RsSPssw/video.html
And I can virtually guarantee you that Stevie would love this if he ever heard it. I hope he has, because this SOARS! Now THAT is a cover. I could give you thousands of other examples. I could give plenty of examples of covers of classical music you would likely hate, but you are not the one that matters, and neither am I. There IS NO one that matters. What matters is what it does for MANY people that hear it. One person's trash is another person's gold, and that is exactly how it SHOULD BE. Being stuck in the mud means that you miss SO MUCH of what the musical world has to offer. Your choice. As I say, it's personal, so maybe keep it personal, huh? Except of course when you are in charge of the music, then show it to the world. Some people will love it, some will hate it, many will be completely indifferent, and it doesn't matter HOW you do it, that will be true. I actually fine Andre's Olaf choir performances rather dull and lifeless, personally. And that is sure not for lack of a world class choir. Go ahead, explode.

I suggest that they go slower, this sound isn’t really that great fast. And some of them need to be wider while the others need to be more in their head voices. Other wise it’s really good.

They sound so young, choppy, and feel no emotion when they sing. I don’t feel the spirit at all.

They sound young because they are young, and they sound great. This is am excellent group and well-disciplined. My hope is that the students in this group either don't see comments like or take them with a grain of salt. Let's celebrate the fact that kids are singing and participating in this wonderful art. No need for public criticism of young people like this.
