Steps for Painting a High-Gloss Front Door
1. Remove the door from the hinges and remove the hardware.
2. Sand the door down to bare wood using 80 grit sandpaper.
3. Prime the door using an exterior grade oil-based primer.
4. Allow the door to dry overnight before adding the next coat.
5. Lightly sand the door using 220 grit sandpaper.
6. Patch any imperfections in the door with wood putty.
7. Rehang the door before painting to prevent dust from falling on the door. This particular paint is very thick, so there is no concern about dripping.
8. Protect the area with canvas and plastic drop cloths.
9. Paint the door using an exterior grade oil-based paint.
10. Allow the door to dry overnight before adding the final coat.
11. Lightly sand the door using 220 grit sandpaper.
12. Wipe down the door with a tack cloth to remove any dust.
13. Apply the final coat of paint to the door.
Resources:
Mauro painted Jenn’s door using a Fine Paints of Europe [bit.ly/2TuMU0u] oil-based primer/undercoat. It’s a high end, more expensive primer, but Mauro chose it because he needed the door paint to be high-performance and long lasting, especially to preserve the high sheen of the door.
For the paint color itself, Jenn chose an exterior grade, oil-based high gloss paint in the color Seaweed, which is manufactured by Benjamin Moore [bit.ly/2WW0xYx].
To fill in any holes or imperfections on the door, Mauro used MH Ready Patch wood putty [bit.ly/36m5Fbz], which can be found at most home centers.

Lmfaoooo, I was thinking the same thing would happen if I did this in the house my partner and I just bought...that'll be vacant until December bc repairs etc.........we currently live an hour and a half away....my anxiety says no lmao.

You need to make another video on how to do this in 1 day. In the world I live in I can't leave my door off the hinges for 3 days and feel safe. We need practical real world solutions.
you don't need to take the door off but you would need to leave it open for around 8-10 hours after each coat. you Can't paint a door thats down to bare timber its impossible in a day. if its previously painted and dont need much prep then if covers in two coats maybe in a day with water based paints but that hardly ever happens
It’s so frustrating to see these videos that don’t show the final product. TOH has a reputation for not showing the end of all the projects. Why is that?

Ypu do a light sand so it adheres better you dont sand for 2 days

Just painted my front door with a very similar paint color- Sherwin Williams Derbyshire. Not so glossy though. We also have an outside glass door in front of it, so the painted door is not exposed to the elements outside. Really nice Green color & when you hang decor on it, that Green color makes everything just pop.😉
No suggestion on what to do to secure your house while that door is off the hinges? Do they pu in a cheap temporary door?
I sanded my door at 10am put primer kilz complete 3 on the door At 11am. And from 12 pm to 1 pm I painted the door. I put plastic down. In 3 hours I completely painted a door. It looks fantastic. Nothing takes a week long process. I used a craftsman sander with Diablo grit sand paper. I used a steady hand to not get paint everywhere. Might do a 2nd coat to finish it. But painting a door takes under half a day. I have painted inside doors in 15 mins where sanding and primer wasn't needed.
I'm confused. The door was removed, primed, then left overnight to dry. I guess they don't have many burglars around that area.

No one ever seems to go into much detail as to what color to paint the hinge edge or open edge of doors, but it should be covered, as well as addressing the color of the jams.
LATCH side paint INDOOR color, HINGE side paint OUTSIDE color..

Whenever I replace an insulated exterior door I have the homeowner pick a color and then I bring it to a friend who does auto body work and he will spray an auto paint on the exterior let's the door last forever. I never have to go back and replace it again.
Doesn't work so well with wood since the joints expand and contract. Automotive paint is too hard, the paint will crack. I didn't know any better and had this done once for a client who requested to spray a mahogany door. Works great for fiberglass doors though. Fine Paints of Europe has really nice high gloss paints for wooden front doors too, you can buff the paint for a real nice shine similar to an automotive finish. Kelly Moore Epic and Benjamin Moore Grand Entrance as well...if you want to cheat a high gloss Benjamin Moore advance is technically the same paint. Or if want to save money, I've been able to get great result with KM Epic Gloss which was about $75 per gallon vs BM's 50-60 per quart, it does take a while to cure, but after 2 coats I was able to wet sand with 1000 grit and a light polish. Either way both paints take forever to cure for sanding unlike automotive paints.
KM is still a bit soft. You can still use your finger nails and put an indentation to the paint.
Thanks for the video! I love y'alls content. I painted an exterior door at my place the other day. I did like y'all did and took it down, laid it flat, removed all the hardware, cleaned and sanded it, the thing that I did different is that I spray painted it with an airless spray gun. I think that gives a much better result. I would say it always best to spray trim and doors. Only problem I had was dang flies! Couple landed in the wet paint and make a bit of blemish :-( troubles of living with livestock nearby I guess lol.
I'd just let the flies land and get stuck in the paint. Then when the paint is nice and dry I just flick the flies off and use my fingernail to scrape off their severed legs.
Depends on the paint you use with the airless. I personally prefer the trim and cabinet paint by BEHR. Or use a good alkyd oil-based from Benjamin Moore and use it in an HVLP sprayer and keep the edge wet at all times.

I used screws to attach a piece of plywood to the door frame trim. Then filled screw holes and painted trim after plywood removed.
I live in a nice neighborhood but I wouldn't feel safe leaving my front door off for a few days. Is there a faster drying paint?
Latex paint is just fine and will be cured in a few hours. You should let all paint set a few days, though. You can always tack up a piece of plywood with some finish nails over the opening or small screws. No one will mess with it, even in a sketch neighborhood.
You don’t need to take the door off the hinges to strip .you don’t even need to strip. Latex paint dries a lot faster but on a hot day oil paint also dries in a few hours.
Painter here you can use latex paint it's cure in a hour but just make sure to use a oil base primer which should dry in 2 hours

@@Bapuji42 it is when its a oil base paint not a primer. if you use water based primer it wont adhere to it and will bobble up. TLDR you can use oil base primer then use water based paint

Order the Dutch Door Kit from Fine Paints of Europe. Comes with primer, mineral spirit solvent for thinning and cleaning brush, an a Omega paintbrush
Nothing like an oil-based front door paint
I had a few questions they didn't answer. Did the paint the edges with green or the interior color? How did they keep the edge of the front from dropping on the side? So when one opens the door, is the side of the door green paint they'd put on the front? What did they paint the hinge side? I noticed they put it back on it's hinges before painting with non-primer.
Could you use a latex? Sherwin Williams duration?

They must have been using wrong brush, why not roll on what you can??? They are actors not painters! And if you took the door off just paint it while its off - FLAT!! Leaves the front door open for 3 days for the paint to dry, before you know it the neighbourhoods stray dogs, cats and a couple of squatters have moved in 😂
After reading some of the replies, I must say they only provide the 30,000 foot view of painting the door. No real details like - what kind of brush do I use, what is the best way to brush the paint on in order to minimize brush strokes, not to mention how to protect my house while the door dries. I guess this video isn't for novice painters like most of us would be.

From a professional painting aspect how do you pull this off… lots of customers complain about finishes that aren’t sprayed and you leave the door off all night?? And then you leave the door unlocked for 3 days while the paint is drying? There has to be a better way of doing this without putting someone’s family at risk if they live in an area that has crime issues and honestly (we all do)

Is it ok to use a high quality paint roller on a door?
What was done to keep to protect exposed area while door was removed? Was door left down during drying process?
No no no. No matter what roller you use you'll have terrible texture/stippling from the roller itself.
Why reinstall door before painting?
They said to keep dust from settling on the wet door.
I really appreciate this it’s very helpful. I would like to know if the light sanding before final coat was again 220grit sandpaper. Also, although this is great, the finish was still streaky and bumpy. I would if there’s a way for a homeowner to level up the paint job. For instance, if I add in X steps it will be more of a mirror flat finish, or if I simply used paint and primer of X quality it would look much better. And tips here? Thanks Mauro!
I would have used a paint sprayer for a more even finish.
The brush he was using was like a broom, even though oil-based paint self-levels, it won't handle bad brushes and thick paint. He should have added a floetrol product like penetrol (Flood product) to prevent that. This is a black front door I did much easier for home owners to do themselves using a mini roller,if you want an even shinier finish you can tip off with a soft brush. czcams.com/video/8VTZYoEW5vA/video.html

Benjamin Moore Grand Entrance …it’s OK not too shiny. I did a door a few years ago, shiniest paint I could find was One Shot, sign painters enamel, paint dried like a mirror.

This video isn’t that great. Rehanging prior to paint makes the finish dry imperfect. It should be painted while it’s off the hinges and horizontal. It should also be sprayed with an airless sprayer to avoid brush marks.
Great video. Another idea for a video would be to repaint a garage door...the overhead retractable aluminum panel type.

My door has a heavy coat of paint on it. I used 80 grid to take off the sheen, but did not go down to the bear wood. Is this ok, as long as the surface is smooth and gloss free?

What grit sandpaper is recommended for a metal door?
All that depends, does the door have a texture, how bad is the current surface? If the door is not in a terrible state hit it with some scotch brite pads, paint with enamel and a GOOD brush you'll be done in a day.👍
why not water based paint instead of oil based?
because if you want a real gloss finish you have to use oil gloss as well as oil primer and undercoat plus water based paints aint very good

If the door was drying overnight, you didn't show what you did to cover the front door.
It's straight forward really and you don't need to remove the door most of the time just remove the weather strip and your good to close the door without it touching the frame

So unrealistic 🤣 If you are like me and leaving the front door wide open would lead to getting robbed.. Don't stress! I have painted my door on a day off and been able to close it at night. Most paint can dry enough within 8 hours
