    Time: 3-4 hours
    Cost: $100
    Skill Level: Beginner
    Tools List for Painting an Exterior Door:
    HammerSaw horses
    Drill driver
    HEPA vacuum with dust attachment
    2” angled synthetic paint brush
    Shopping List:
    DTM Paint
    Drop cloth
    400 grit sandpaper
    Rags
    Paint tray
    Microfiber paint roller
    Steps:
    1. Remove the door from its hinge pins with the hammer and place it on the saw horses.
    2. Remove the hardware from the door and place it somewhere safe.
    3. Lightly sand the door with 400 grit sandpaper.
    4. Use the vacuum with the dust attachment to clean off the door, then wipe it down with a wet rag.
    5. Pour the paint into a tray. Cut around the panels of the door or any other trim details using the paint brush.
    6. Switch to a microfiber paint roller to paint the rest of the door. To minimize stroke marks, use long strokes and light pressure on the roller.
    7. Let the door sit for an hour or two until dry, then apply the second coat.
    8. Allow the second coat to dry, and then rehang the door.
    Resources:
    Mauro used DTM, or direct-to-metal, paint that can be found at most home centers and paint supply stores. The paint was manufactured by Benjamin Moore (www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us) in the color “Black Beauty” (www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/c....
    Other supplies for this project, including foam rollers and a synthetic angled sash brush are sold at home centers and paint supply stores.
    Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Mauro’s Painting (maurospainting.com/).

    A velour roller is better than a foam one it leaves fewer stipples and applies the paint a little heavier

  • @jordanxfile
    @jordanxfile Před 5 lety +26

    I don't like foam rollers; I used them years ago, to paint my bathroom cabinets and despite priming, sanding in between every coat there was an orange peel effect. Instead, I am using velour rollers with a short nap and the woodwork is very smooth. Thank you for the video, I like TOH videos and the crew :)

      "Velour" rollers? 🤔? That's surprising to me because growing up my mother would have us (me and my 4 other siblings) paint each room twice a year. She always said it's "spring cleaning/spruce up time" lol. All of those years painting every room over and over 🤪😶🙄, uhhgg! I'm pretty sure we used every kind of painting tool out there (also my mother was all about reusing the stuff we already had) but it could be I didn't hear of the velour roller because after leaving home I tried to stay as far away as I could from painting! 😂! My mother and father are gone now but don't you know I miss just those 2 people and those kinds of moments so much now. Love you Momma and daddy!

      @jordanxfile Před rokem

      @@cindykincade589 Hello there. Very sorry to hear about your parents. But that is life I guess; mine are gone too. The thing about velour rollers is that they have a short nap, Very similar to microfiber cloths in appearance. They could be named something else in your area. But they sure are superior to foam rollers. On the packaging, you should see that they are suitable for varnish application. Obviously, this is for woodwork. You would not want that degree of perfection on a ceiling or wall, as the paint will be more matte and will not reflect light as much, showing less imperfections or texture.

    The only places to use a brush is inside the grooves. You need to minimize the brush marks. I use the brush inside grooves then lightly use the roller to get rid of any brush marks. This guarantees you consistency. I would never use a brush to paint panels.

    • @danwood4942
      @danwood4942 Před 2 lety +7

      Agreed. So now the panels will have brush marks and the rest of the door will have a light textured finish. Weird experts giving better info. Specially when you’re using semi gloss or gloss enamel, it is gonna show Everything In a dark color. Brush the grooves and before that dries roll the whole door and make sure it’s not hot out, you want the whole door to stay wet while you paint or it will look horrible. You also want to tape the edges so if any paint runs down you won’t have a mess on the edge. Honestly the best way is to spray it. Make sure u sand and I would primer it before paint, I have seen the paint peel off the hot metal too many times,

      I live in Florida. The best answer is just wait until winter when you have a weekend where temps are cooler. The amount of bugs are also significantly less in winter/cooler weather than they are in summer. The last answer is to use house wrap (thin painters drop cloth tends to be too flimsy and stretches) and seal up the opening by taping it around the door frame if the door will be off for an extended period.

    So, for how long was the door removed from the house? All that time it was open to let bugs fly or walk in, and the AC or Heating was most likely running. Finally, the door goes back on, so the question is, was the door off long enough that the paint was dry enough so that it did would not stick to the seals? Here, in South Texas, having the door removed for just a few minutes would be long enough to cause some serious bug problems, including scorpions.
    You should consider making a new video showing suggestions of how to prevent energy loss or bug invasions during the time the door is not in place. Not to mention if the door must be left off overnight.

    Takes too much time and doors are hard to reinstall correctly. I have painted many doors. Leave door on hinges, pick a warm day, leave open inside house, tape off the hardware, repair and sand, wipe clean and use a special nap roller for metal after brushing. Works great with less effort

    What is the red clip on the paint tray used for?

    • @gsambolin
      @gsambolin Před 4 lety +3

      There are two magnets on it. One Vertical and the other horizontal. My guess is the horizontal one is to keep the paint brush out of the pan and in place. The vertical magnet would be to keep the paint brush tip into the pan and in place. The other end of the clip looks like a paint can opener.

      Virgil you can go to an auto paint supply store and get custom mixed paint in spray cans. We'll worth the extra money.

      I did that on a door we purchased. Took it straight from the dealer to the auto shop. They painted the outside a beautiful red and the inside white. Absolutely awesome! After 10 years, it looks the same as the day I hung it!

      Josh Hibbs There is special transparent laquer for yaughts to make things waterproof. I used it on some MDF panels that i have outdoors on the inside of my balcony fence to keep eyes from protruding my private space. Those panels are still in top condition after 3 years or so. But mileage may vary. Just try it if you feel brave for it. If it doesnt work somehow, get out the sander and paint it another time without the experimental stuff.

      Yes but the paint they were using was for metal and the spline is mostly wood and would of looked ugly if painted with the same paint ! I was guessing that is why they skipped it !

    • @Justchuck69
      @Justchuck69 Před 6 lety

      I mean if i was doing that door i would of done the spline with a spray can that had a similar look to the paint on the door ! As you stated the spline is usually done to look the same as the outside of the door so it will not stand out when the door is open !

    • @JackmanWorks
      @JackmanWorks Před 6 lety +1

    • @Justchuck69
      @Justchuck69 Před 6 lety +1

      Yes i saw that but i was taught that the spline should be the same color as the outside color and the striking ( or hardware ) side should be the same as the inside of the door ! So when the door is open nothing will really stand out ! Maybe I'm too old school and maybe they don't teach that anymore !

      With this Old House, they should’ve done an existing metal door that was older. Not a brand new one straight from the factory. Saboor, if your metal door is older and has been painted on; you will need to sand, wipe and prime before painting. Glidden says an oil paint made for metal works best.

    No primer???? Unless the door is brand new, I would have added a coat of good primer. Also, what's with brushing the middle sections? Make no sense whatsoever. You roll that just like you do the outside area. And he missed the hinge edge. That gets the same color as the outside. The inside hinge gets the same color as the inside of the door.
