I recommend removing the fill plug first just to make sure you can fill it back up before dumping all the fluid
That's a good idea. Can always remove the shifter and fill through there too as a last resort.
💯 beat me to it haha!
@@TheBudgetMindedMotoristahh thanks this was my main question that brought me here
Thx dude, I last did this in 2006, haha, my memory is refreshed!
Thanks for making this, sure it’s simple but a quick rundown before the job is nice…also thats for covering correct fluid and tools. subscribed, hopefully you have videos on other work I’m doing to my 99’ SS Camaro. Thanks again!
You should also mention that the vehicle should be as level as possible when filling
to easy, thank you for making this video!
Very informative
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks for the very simple video ! I will be doing this on my z28 camaro now
You are welcome! Have fun! 😁👍

Is the exact same fluid you used safe in a 2000 corvette t56 6spd by chance im concerned a little since it’s atf but it is dextron 3
Always make sure you can remove the fill plug out BEFORE removing the drain plug.
That's a good idea
Awesome informative vid !!!! Can this be done if I use jack stands in my garage? I don't have a lift.Nobody works on my Firehawk but me! Love the color "48U" btw.
Absolutely! That's how I did mine, just be careful of course. I have to say, I wouldn't let anyone else work on my Firehawk either if I had one! Closest I'll get to one anytime soon is my LS1 Firehawk wheels on my trans am lol.
great info ... like your editing on the video ... what camera gear are you using ?
Thanks man. The stop motion you did with the cam, rockers and springs in your cam swap video was pretty awesome! I used a couple cheap "Campark" brand GoPro knock offs for the shots under the car where I didn't want to get my favorite camera messy but I use a Canon T7i for the other shots where I'm not afraid to ruin it.
Hey man, great tutorial. I had a couple questions if you don't mind. I have a t56 magnum xl. Do you know if it's any different in changing the fluid? It's quite difficult to find info on this trans.
Also, does the car have to be lifted on both ends for proper drainage as opposed to just jacking it from the front. Wondering if that would prevent all the fluid from exiting. Thank you! Appreciate it
Thank you! I don't have any experience with the Magnum xl, but I would think the process should be quite similar if not exactly the same. It appears to have a similar drain and fill plug set up at the older t56 like mine. I only lifted the front when I did mine and it drained fine since the drain plug is at the rear anyway. But I'd recommend having the car level as possible when filling for the sake of an accurate fill level. It might not matter a whole lot, but it's better to be safe. You could always send an email to Tremec and see if they can confirm if the drain and fill process is any different on the Magnum XL. I'm sure they'd be willing to give you a definitive answer.
Hey, do you need to put something on the threads of the drain/fill bolts so they don’t leak? Like Teflon tape or silicone?
I put a little RTV on my plug just to be on the safe side. Not sure it's absolutely necessary though.
I'm kinda surprised a manual transmission uses automatic transmission fluid
Was just checking to see what others have used for fluids. Pretty positive these transmissions can use dextron 4 no problem as its backwards compatible. I dont remember what I used years ago in 2011 when I did clutch. Most likely dex3. Changing it out now that im getting car back on the road from so long ago 😅 hasnt ran since 2014😭😭
I would think dex 4 is ok if it's backwards compatible. Haven't tried it personally though. Glad it'll be back on the road! Mine sat for about 4 or 5 years at one point. I was definitely excited to get mine going again.
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist i ordered some delco type 3. Idk why it isnt called dextron 3 but they make it! Thanks man it's been a hawl 😅😅 24x conversion with 411 pcm, hptuners, le2 heads, big cam, intake porting,1.6rr, etc etc basically all the things except the short block has been changed. Should be around 420/430whp when done. Definitely not budget minded here 🤣 well kinda, i did skip out on built shortblock but i should be good for awhile with just 70k on block. 5 years is long too!!
@@clifford_2zero7 nice build!
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist thanks! Take care bro!!
Eazy way fill from shifter.
Hey man how would I find out what flavor of oil I would need if I don't have the Manuel?
My transmission had a sticker on the side that listed the Dexron flavor. Pretty sure it was on the driver's side.
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist Thanks a ton brother. Great work on the rebuild and video is perfect for anyone bold enough to attack the rebuild by themselves.
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist just curious is it okay if I use full synthetic or should I just stick with the basic Dexron III ATF fluid mine recommends?
@@erikrodriguez9293 glad to help 😁👍 I've heard there can be some compatibility issues with synthetic fluid depending on the material used in different blocker rings. From what I could find when I was trying to decide on synthetic or conventional fluid, it sounds like synthetic is bad for the "paper" lined blocker rings but is fine with carbon fiber rings. Conventional should be compatible with either type of ring and is what is generally recommended if you aren't sure what kind of blocker ring material you have. I just run O'Reilly store brand Dexron III. It's pretty cheap and seems to work well for my daily driven car.
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist Thanks so much for the info I really appreciate it but I will for sure go with conventional choice until I can figure out which blocker ring I have. Again your info has been very invaluable and appreciate your time. Wish you were in my city I'd definately pay you for a rebuild ! 😅
Should car be completly level when refilling?
It'd be best to get it at least close to level. I wouldn't stress about it being super exact though.
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist thanks. Very handy video btw.
Preparing to do a T56 fluid change in a Holden Commodore Ute.
@@Pittaz thank you! That commodore ute sounds pretty awesome. Wish we had those here in the states!
I have a 01 manual trans. When I press the clutch down it sometimes sticks to the floor or is really slow to come back up. It has a new clutch so idk what it could be. Anyone have an idea?
Check your clutch fluid level, could be low. If thats not the case then there may be air in the system that needs bled out.
throw out bearing
I have an 01 z28 camaro with a stage 2 t56, I’m seeing dexron 3, is this correct?
yes dexron 3 is recommended for the t56, my local dealership said they only had dexron 6 which is the newer fluid they use that is compatible with the old dexron 3
Shouldn't the car be level?
Most likely yes
Umm on t56 you never use the fill plug is it wont put enough fluid in trans, you need to pop the sensor and fill there.
So why did gm put a fill plug there if it's useless
@chadrichards8930 who knows why gm did alot of things... due to the angle the trans sits you can't get the full amount in at the fill. Thought everyone knows this.
@@OGANGLER nope just you. even ls1tech which is all things ls, says to use the fill plug
@@chadrichards8930 okay 🤡
Wow.
