His basketball sense is uncanny. I don't know how many 3 point contests he won but I've heard witnesses says they've seen him hit 50 or 60 in a row in practice - in an era when 3 point shooting wasn't a thing yet.

Bird made defensive teams..Luka hasn't. Bird was a better shooter in all facets of scoring..midrange, post, 3 point in an era where the three pointer was hardly taken, free throw. And bird averaged 10 boards while playing with two other hall of fame big men in Parish and McHale. And Bird was the first 50/40/90 guy and he wasn't even thinking of focused on doing that.

One of the most respectful discussions on one of these subjects I've ever seen and it's refreshing. I'm sure if JJ Reddick was on there he would have pointed to some obscure analytic that shows Luka is better due to the spacing and pace of modern day NBA.
Also, I know this isn't a Celtics show, but I would love a segment with Paul ranking the top 5 or 10 Celtics, and where he would slot himself in. He's a prideful guy (remember the Dwayne Wade comparison) but you can see he gets modest when he considers himself among the Celtics greats.

All these iconic players have similarities. Luka has some Paul Pierce flashes in his game like the step back J and the dribble out the clock iso. I also see the Carmelo post game at times. Luka even adopted the Dirk 1 legged fadeaway. But I really don't see the Bird in Doncic. I wasn't old enough to watch Larry Legend but the highlights look like a completely different style of play
Robert parish had never made an All Star game in his life and was averaging 13pts a game, until he played with Larry Bird. As soon as he stepped on the court with Larry, Parish becomes an All Star, averages 19pts a game, and wins a championship. That's what Larry Bird could do.
The Celtics don’t win any championship without Parish. Birds first championship was because of MVP Cedric Maxwell in the Finals not Bird who choked in that series. The Celtics only won 30 games before Bird, Mchale and Parish got their was because Auerbach purposely threw away the season so he could get Bird at the 6th draft choice. To sum it up Bird did not miraculously turn the Celtics around they were not a 30 win team to begin and would not have won 60 without the other allstars including Nate Archibald.

In the other game where he scored low, he had 12 rebounds and 7 assists. He was making plays for everyone and playing defense without inflating his scoring numbers. If he wanted to do that, he would've done it. Bird wanted to win, he wasn't interested in looking good. His assists and rebounds were influential, not a choke job. Parish didn't average as many points as Bird. McHale only averaged 4.7 points, so he wasn't much help. Without Parish do they win? No. Without Bird, Parish never becomes a hall of famer, and they don't win any chips. Saying Archibald threw away the season is asinine (look up the definition of asinine). One player can throw away the season for the team? What about the other players? The coach doesn't care? Just one player makes the decision. What about the season before that, where they only won 32 games? Did Archibald throw away two seasons in a row? Bird was drafted in 78, a whole full year before he left college. So why why Archibald throw away a year away for the whole team when they already drafted Bird? I like Luka, but come on... This is the first season he is shooting 3s better than the league average and he's still in the 70s in FT%. He's entering his peak years now so let's see what he can do. For perspective, aside from outrebounding Luka, Bird shot about .4 from 3 pt. range for 4 seasons a row in the mid 80s when the league average was between .28 and .31. "As a percentage" of the average, he shot about 33% better than the league 3 pt. % WHILE shooting higher volume than the average. This is a mind boggling feat that is so staggering, Parsons can't comprehend it. Just the difference in FT% alone would swing quite a few close playoff games to Bird's favor compared to Luka. In today's game, Bird would be a far better 3 pt. shooter because he would have learned to shoot the way modern players learn. He would have practiced shooting like modern players do... shooting at least hundreds and perhaps 500-1000 in a single day. In game, he would shoot far more 3s and therefore, score far more points than he did in the 80s. Luka has modern moves that Bird didn't, because Luka is a modern player... if that's the point Parsons is making then he's correct. That's not a very useful way to compare players across generations though. If Luka had anywhere near the hand eye coordination of Bird, he wouldn't be shooting 70 something from the FT line.
