Du hast für Willy Berendet mit seiner Hawaii-Gitarre ein gutes Händchen. Das hat schon der schöne Steel Guitar Rag auf Philips-Platte bewiesen. Gegen diese einfühlsame und trotzdem nicht langweilieg Telefunken-Aufnahme des La Paloma-Klassikers fallen die etwas späteren auf Imperial deutlich ab. Vielen Dank für diese freudige Überraschung!

My grandmother, my father and his younger brother all visited Germany in 1937 from their home in Hawaii. They happened to encounter another German recording of "Aloha Oe" which they purchased and brought home. When I encountered this particular record at my grandmother's house in the 1960s I was puzzled that a Hawaiian song had been recorded so far away. I didn't discover till about 10 years ago that Germans have an obsession with Hawaii.

Cool. I have a number of vintage Telefunken vacuum tubes (valves) in my private stash of tubes.

Thanks for the comment. At that time, Telefunken was already a high-end manufacturer of audio equipment. For example, Telefunken's TO 1002 pickup with saphire needle was a big jump from the gramophone needle to modern electric playback.

Das ist eine sehr schöne Version. Ich habe nur Berendt-Platten auf Imperial.

Danke. Interessant ist, dass hier eine elektrische Verstärkung sogar auf dem Etikett erwähnt wird. Der Klang ist aber sehr natürlich und man könnte meinen, das wäre ein rein akustisches Instrument.

The Hawaiian music had waves of popularity in USA. Around 1900, mid1920s, 1940s and when Hawaii became state in late 50s.
The tone of Hawaiian guitar has a changing pitch-tone VIBRATO unique to it, recordings before the 50s tend to make it sound like regular steel guitar, but the Telefunken record captures it.
