  • It was so borinng.... but that's alright, I guess. Steven Universe has given me enough to not outright hate it's send-off. I'm simply disappointed that it didn't go out with a bang.
    ~~~
    I was going to sing these lyrics to a potential song I made that everyone would sing to calm Steven....idk... what do you guys think? Should I bother making it to completion?
    Small child, young man, but large problems.
    The harsh winter’s come before autumn.
    And I see before me, behind the cracked lee;
    My son, steven universe, surrounded by sea--
    And the waves, crashing down- (lapis)
    In your pain you’ve drowned- (peridot)
    But know that, we love you- (bismuth)
    Bit more than you chewed- (spinel)
    “Steven, Steven Universe”
    “Steven, Steven Universe”
    We’ll burden your curse, before it gets worse;
    Oh plEASE-
    Please--- please…
    Let us in…. (diamonds)
    “Steven, Steven Universe”
    “Steven Steven Universe”
    We’re at your serviceserse…
    Our feelings aren’t adverse..
    Oh please---
    Please--- please…
    Don’t let it win- (connie bismuth, lapis, peridot)
    Rose quartz, my diamond, my Steven- (jasper)
    All my life, i fought to get even-
    But now, I see, before me..
    Our wreckless fighting sprees…
    And the waves, crashing down (yellow)
    In your pain, you’ve drowned (blue)
    But know that, we love you- (white)
    All this pain we have brewd- (greg)
    “Steven, Steven universe.”
    “Steven, Steven Universe”
    In comfort immerse…
    Just let us converse…
    Let your pain be reversed….
    This is a rant. Read at your own caution.
    The big build up for the entirety of the show ends in 5 seconds after Steven gets a hug.
    And the gems did a pretty lousy job of taking care of Steven. I mean, Garnet has FUTURE VISION.
    Hello?!
    And she's more or less perfected it now.
    So please, tell me why she didn't see this coming, ESPECIALLY as she saw Steven getting rejected by Connie but NOT Steven getting 'depression' and turning into a monster.
    Speaking about 'depression'. I've never experienced it, nor do I know anyone with it so I'm not an expert but it felt...rushed.
    First of all, the entire reason is 'Pink D is horrible.' Pink is being villainised, because?
    I don't know. How come the Diamonds don't get any repercussions for their evil actions and everyone forgives them, but Pink Diamond? The Diamond who was abused and tried to fight for Earth? Oh no, she's such a villain just because she bubbled Bismuth and abandoned Spinel. And Spinel didn't get hate for destroying Steven's happiness despite clearly knowing he WASN'T Pink Diamond. She very clearly said 'I just wanted to take my anger out on a bunch of strangers' at one point. A bunch. Of. STRANGERS.
    And why does she get excused? Why do the diamonds get excused despite doing horrible things for MILLENIA?
    Returning to Steven. This stuff all gets triggered from Jasper fighting him, basically saying 'oh your useless hahahaHAHAHhah' and from that pink outbursts and hating pink diamond saga starts.
    Why though? He's already thinks she's sketchy, for the least, why does Jasper's words shake him to this point? Especially as Jasper holds Pink up to high regard and wouldn't diss her, ever. Idk really.
    From then, other things she's done come to light. And Steven starts to get mad as it's always like he has to clean up her mistakes. Volleyball episode wasn't too bad, other than the fact that volleyball never came back >:(
    But now Steven's getting stressed. And the final straw on the camel's back is... proposing to Connie?
    Why would he do that? Just, why?
    I mean, it's obvious. To copy Garnet's wedding. And after their wedding everything was perfect with those two.
    Only they were in a romantic relationship. And Steven and Connie weren't (at least, not a serious one).
    Steven didn't want Connie to leave. So he wanted to be Stevonnie with her so when she left, he'd come with her.
    But no. Seriously? Would Steven, even Steven with anxiety, do this? He wouldn't be stupid enough to believe Ruby and Sapphire, not GARNET considering GARNET would know about being happy together too, to marry Connie and be happily ever after?
    Uhhh no.
    Going on. Argument with Greg. Steven's mad that he was too free. Greg basically said 'hey kiddo it's better than being too trapped :]' and Steven crashed the car.
    Greg basically gave Steven the upbringing he would've liked to have, which although isn't ideal, you understand why. But Steven's now saying 'because you were too lax, all this stuff happened' which is also understandable but not really. Homeworld would've found him wherever he was.
    Fragments. I don't know why Steven even agreed to training in the first place. I don't know why Garnet didn't use future vision to find out where Steven was. I don't know why he agreed to fight her with these powers he didn't know about.
    Because depression? No.
    But I would've preferred if Jasper stayed shattered. It would've given him a permanent punishment.
    I'm skipping a lot.
    Soooo skip to big finale. Because he sees himself as a monster, he becomes one.
    And all of this trauma, all of his pain, shattering Jasper and attempting to shatter White, being rejected by Connie, arguing with his dad, constant reminders of his mother's mistakes, gets resolved with 5 words.
    'Steven, we're here for you.'
    In 5 seconds.
    And after that, he gets therapy(from WHOM?!) and moves out because?
    Because big sad.
    How is he going to get a job? He's missed out on school completely..
    I love Steven Universe, but I really hated the ending of the whole series being fixed by the power of friendship.
    This answer is too long. If I've gotten anything wrong please tell me
    I find it extremely hard to believe that Steven is made out to be stronger than the three other Diamonds combined. Episode after episode it seemed he was getting a new ability (some that didn't make any sense for his character other than to be extremely convenient for the plot) and those abilities outnumbered the Diamond's own even WITH their new powers. Yet for the entirety of the show the Diamonds were big, intimidating, powerful, they were *huge* threats that the Crystal Gems were scared of because they ARE the biggest possible threat out there. White Diamond was especially terrifying because she was the biggest of them all, with the power to literally control everyone around her if she were to focus hard enough. She never had to lift a finger to fight because others did the fighting for her under her authority and command. Yet Steven was made out to be even *more* powerful than all three of them? He couldn't be stopped by the Diamonds, who were previously perceived to be genocidal war criminals?? Yeah, okay. By that logic Blue, Yellow and White should've taken Pink Diamond more seriously as she was apparently more powerful than them.
      yes I had the exact same problem, pink/steven seemed to have way more powers then the three of them and to add insult to injury they're powers weren't even that impressive. they could only do damage to gem kind so organics don't have the same weakness, they only had 1 power each, and half the time non diamond gems are way more powerful, lapis could literally control presumably the whole ocean and yellow & white could only really attack one at a time. then steven has like 17 varied powers that can work against gems and non gems
    • @kou7191
      @kou7191 Před 2 lety +13
      I mean, Steven/Pink isn't a Mary Sue per se, but he did get a lot of random and/or convenient, asspull powers - between his and Rose/Pin's powers, aside from "normal" gem skills like strength, shapeshifting and weapon summoning, he has:
      1- healing so strong it can revive the dead
      2- the ability to give life to plants/rocks
      3- force fields (that evolve into a Green lantern style thing I guess?)
      4- supervoice that works as energy blast waves
      5- gravity manipulation he can use to "fly"
      6- Flash-level superspeed
      7- empathic link, astral projection, and can even possess other people
      8- vibration manipulation? (only used against Lapis that one time)
      9- static signal jamming? (only hinted at, not confirmed)
      That's...more than double all the other 3 Diamonds *combined* have (electric shocks so strong it destabilizes gems, an emotional aura, and mind control). Really, only healing and shielding would've been enough, and even then, healing could've been a skill all Diamonds possess, not just Pink. It started becoming overkill when he started getting all those psychic powers.
    I’m just gonna say it. Tangled: the Series is a show that also features a teenage kid who starts off very sweet and innocent, suffers a breakdown that leads him on a very destructive path, and brings him back to being sweet and kind, but that seemed to be done a lot more organically, because we saw exactly what led him to break down and we saw him go back on the path of good. Of course that kid doesn’t have any magical powers nor is he involved in an intergalactic war, he’s just a regular teenage boy. But his entire character arc was well-written and pretty satisfying. Probably because he developed over the course of several episodes instead of snapping out of his berserker rage with just a hug. I’m just saying this because Tangled: the Series really is a good show that deserves more recognition but also because its good guy-bad guy-good guy character was honestly written quite well, at least in comparison to Steven
      Finally someone agrees with me about the whole Rose Quartz thing. Not only was it boring, it sort of...felt very wrong? The Diamonds, who likely did worse than Rose, were redeemed, yet Rose was given more and more reasons to hate her. This wouldn’t be a big deal if Rose were alive, but she isn’t. She couldn’t defend herself, or even be redeemed. It could’ve been interesting if, maybe, Pink Diamond was bad, and the early days of Rose Quartz she was selfish and sort of an attention-hog, but maybe she could’ve improved and actually start to love the Earth, which makes her determined to stay and actually defend the planet. She didn’t have to be the bad guy all her life, and I really hate that they paint her like that, the one person that’s truly “gone” in the show, yet redeem everyone else.
Their actions have consequences but these consequences VERY RARELY impact THEM the way Rose's did. Rose's actions have consequences, not just for her, but for everyone she ever cared about, and the consequences haunt everyone years later when she's not even around because that's just how big the ripple effect of her actions is shown to be. Are other gems haunted by what the Diamonds did before the first SU finale?Sure they are, but the Diamonds don't really care much about any gems besides themselves, Spinel, and Steven so it doesn't affect them as much. The Diamonds help other gems but you can help people without caring a lot about them
      That episode where Steven shows he still hasn't completely forgiven White by attempting to crack her gem on a pillar was a step in the right direction, but the writers didn't do much with the idea that Steven hasn't forgiven her after that. It would have gone hand in hand with the idea that just because she isn't doing anything evil NOW doesn't mean the evil things she did stopped hurting people. Just like how Rose not being around to make choices now doesn't mean her decisions stopped hurting people. We've had YEARS of seeing how badly Rose messed up. It would've been nice to see the Diamonds seeing consequences they never thought about, being forced to realize just how badly THEY messed up, and being bothered by the consequences
    Thing is, as a person who hugs people to make them feel better, friends or family (with consent of course) this ending was as barebones as you can get. "A hug fixes everything" is not how it works; yes a hug can help heal mental wounds, a strong one can even fix long-term ones but it doesn't fix everything. It's a process.
    A hug is like a Bandage; it doesn't fix the problem, but helps you while you fix it. What comes after hugging is listening and understanding; talking things through. That's the real solution, but they glanced over that and focused on the wrong area.
    I've talked with people worse than steven, people questioning their life; their purpose, coping with the past and even the fate of their own life hangs in the balance at times; the listening and talking after a hug is what helps people, they need someone to vent to, to get their frustrations out and to understand what is going on; a fresh perspective. Something the Finale did nothing on beyond "WE LOVE YOU!" That isn't listening.
Like, a genocidal space society with its own caste system and questionable ethics all centered on the theme of gems? That sounds fucking awesome. This show suffers from the lack of human interaction from outside Beach City and the lack of development of Homeworld. I feel like if we saw more gems get shattered we can actually have stakes, and be more unnerved at the shattered-gem fusions
      So like I completely see your point, its a valid criticism right there. The lore is lacking severely, but I would question if more lore would have disconnected the audience from the very real human problems that Steven and the Gems were going through all throughout the show. That's what worldbuilding is for: to distance the viewer from the story by establishing a set of pre-established non-negotiable or unchanging aspects of a vastly reality. But because Rebecca sugar wanted to keep the viewer CLOSE or similar to Steven's narrative, worldbuilding in SUF would have worked against that.
      The ending makes it pretty obvious that Steven will presumably either get over or learn to better manage his trauma someday. Temporary or not, it's still a fix and a rushed one at that.
      The problem isn't that Steven still has issues. Quite the opposite. His arc of facing his trauma was a great idea despite everyone seeing corrupted Steven coming from a mile away.
      The problem is that the journey toward the finale builds up another compelling obstacle only to once again waste too much time and ultimately solve the danger in a few minutes.
      It's the same flaw the show's been criticized for throughout every major arc & big villain. It's been a repetitive formula for years, and the show had every chance to improve on that.
      More and more fans have grown wise to the routine, which is one reason a number consider this finale anticlimactic. People can argue that this is more Cartoon Network's fault.
      I feel like the problem you and other people have with this show is not that the show “resolves” issues too quickly and easily, because one message of Steven Universe Future is that Steven’s problems can’t be solved so quickly. Steven goes to Connie, Greg, and the Diamonds expecting them to “resolve” his problems, but they can’t. Steven has to learn that you can’t fix away trauma, it takes time and effort, whether or not you think that message should’ve been made a bit more obvious is up to you.
      The problem people actually have with the finale is that they think time should’ve been taken to show Steven work through his problems, which others think would’ve been more impactful. This on the other hand, was not what Rebecca had in mind, and if you think this should’ve been shown, that is perfectly valid. It’s also valid if you think there should’ve been consequences, but for the SUF finale specifically the people who Steven may have wronged or scared had forgiven him, again enforcing SU’s message about love and family.
      “When Connie bolts in on Lion and is making her (iconic) rallying cry, she never says they need to fix Steven or heal him; she says they need to help him. Because that’s the only way he can get better.”
      “The hug didn’t fix everything! That’s the big thing. The hug was a pure, beautiful moment, but I don’t believe it was meant to be a plot device to try to fix everything. Everyone was still emotional, he still destroyed things, he scared people, he scared himself. That wasn’t all magically fixed because of the hug. But his resolve to do the work, get help, and accept what happened to him - that is what made him go from Worm Steven to Boy Steven.”
      If you feel like the finale would’ve been better had we actually seen him work through his issues, that is perfectly valid (it is also valid to feel like the message could’ve been more obvious to the viewer, which I agree with).But Rebecca’s vision was different, she instead wanted to show the start of Steven’s journey to recovery rather than the end of it. Trying to show Steven work through the mounds of trauma he has would need its own season if Rebecca wanted to properly showcase all the intricacies of living with trauma. But of course your opinion is still valid no matter what it is!! :)
Maybe we get treated to the original Gems trying to help Steven at least enough not to shatter by entering the this inner world through the Diamonds' help, a storyline that could have been teased, and it leads to them seeing Stevens inner world and how it's withered, bleak, slowly becoming a cracking strangely nightmarish void. It ultimately leads to them healing the healer/support of the group more fairly, and can have the other characters trying to connect with him to pull him it out of it he reforms and his diamond doesn't break.
      i somewhat agree but apparently rebecca said she didn’t want to show more of steven healing because she wanted to give steven privacy and if that’s the case why show us that much of the trauma but not the healing, it just seems wrong, i mean if they planned to have it that way just keep the drama in future to a minimum, make it be him actually struggling with how his mom was before now that everybody and everything’s chill instead of him causing problems by trying to help currently, you know?
      i just think if you plan on making every seasons trauma a major element in future your going to need to show proper development to him getting better due to everything everybody remembers from the previous seasons, i think her saying steven deserves privacy is somewhat of a cop out.
      plus they could’ve ad least shown a calendar of Stevens pretty consistent therapist meetings or shown something of him meeting with a therapist over a song playing or something, it just feels like too little after them using all the seasons troubles that he’s been through, even more since back then it didn’t affect him that heavily, and back then he had people trying to kill him, but he never got super angry a lot back then, in this new season it just feels like he’s trying to cause problems on purpose, maybe it’s just me but it seems like he just needs that now and that’s just not a stable way to life.
      i know they pull a “he’s all better now” though a timeskip but i still think they needed more there to have it be believable, you know?
But Yellow Diamond just put them back together without melding them in any way.
    I mean if all it took to heal a shattered gem was to just casually put the pieces together without any glue then THE WHOLE PLOT OF STEVEN UNIVERSE IS POINTLESS, what was the point of Pink "Shattering" herself. What was the point of the Diamonds grieving over Pink Diamond's shattering, they didn't even say "oh she's fine just put her back together" that's exactly the nonsense they did with that scene with Yellow Diamond fixing shattered gems, THAT WAS BULL____! If they wanted a scene for Yellow Diamond they should've just had her fixing the horns of corrupt gems.
