Is the 1861 Overture a version of Dixie?
"each dixie boy must understand that he must mind his uncle Sam, away, away well all go down to dixie"

Love this!! Now, you never used him but I have always regretted never thanking Basil Poledouris before he died. (Red Dawn)
@@primalreversion7034 (copy-pasted from dillionderosa.com): The main theme of the south, Dixieland and the theme of the North, Battle Hymn of the Republic are played one after the other to depict the conflict between the two armies. A development battle ensues as the conflict between the two grow. Concluding the battle is a triumphant version of Dixieland to represent the South dominating the war up to this point. General Stonewall Jackson is introduced next in a joyous marching victory. His theme is built to a climatic end with two abrupt cannon shots to represent Jackson’s sudden death when he was shot twice by his own confused men.
The North then starts to have major victories with battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg. These northern victories forced the South to be on the defensive for the rest of the war. After a grandiose Battle Hymn of the Republic, the south returns with William T. Sherman’s theme, Marching Through Georgia. Continuing with the southern themes, Swing Low is introduced to represent the struggle of the slaves. The North and South themes return once more before another developmental battle erupts. However, this time the North is victorious concluding the war between them. The piece ends in a exciting coda with the North, South, and the abolishment of slavery represented with a jubilant Swing Low finale.
Klaus's theme songit the most Indiana Jones'esque nazi song I've heard in a while.
I love how the Nazi is somehow the least insane looking out of all three.

There's a certain amount of irony in the VVitchfinder General having arguably the best theme yet canonically hating everything about music that didn't praise God.
Did Matthew Hopkins hate music? True, the only music in a puritan service were psalms, (no organ), but puritans did have music outside of the church.
Do we know anything about the musical tastes of the innkeeper of the Thorn at Mistley? (I've looked and haven't found anything so far).
The character that Vincent Price played may indeed have hated secular music; I don't know - it was back in the 70s when I saw it on telly, and I can't remember.
And in the course of checking, I find the UK version is shorter than the US cut, has a different title, and the scores are by different composers!
I'll bet the US version doesn't have the spaceship scene.
@@cheesedoff-with4410 O wow, that's crazy.
It is indeed. (I was kidding about the spaceship of course.)
@@cheesedoff-with4410
Oliver Cromwell was known for his love of music. In fact the first opera in England was performed under his rule. But like all other puritans, he did not agree that there should be music in church. Singing psalms and stuff was allowed in church, but not music.
Yo, that first piece is telling a STORY. Outstanding work from the composer. I can really hear a wartime narrative in that music.
It would make a great soundtrack for Emperor Tigerstar's time lapse map of the Civil War...
If you visit Dillon's website, he indeed outlines the narrative within it!
Yeah, it is heavily inspired, as the title indicates, from Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture that tells the success then defeat of the French Napoleonic troops in Russia. You get the same thing with the Marseillaise playing, then interrupted by gunshots and Russian musics taking over.
The music opens with Dixie representing the Confederacy and in real history, the rebellion struck first. Wait...
A man with multiple personality disorder, a former-lost-causer complex and a love for history has made an OST.
*gooooooood*
You would think it would end up as incomprehensible noise but hear we are.
He has a multiple personality disorder?
@@jamier65551 no its just a joke on all the characters he plays, since they’re all him with a costume and an accent lol
I'm so disappointed that your masterclass rendition of "John Brown's body" isn't on this list XD
The instrumental is intertwined in the 1861 overture, no singing like in one of his checkmate lincolnites videos
The melody is interposed with the entire 1861 overture, I recommend listening the whole way through, its actually more of a reoccuring theme than the dixie song
Maybe saving it for a 3rd OST...
Also props to Atun-Shei for somehow always coincidentally timing new releases for when I'm loaded.
I, too, am filled with burrito.
I'm just waiting for OST Album#3.
Klaus' theme sounds like it should be in a medal of honour game.
i think that's the intent to sound like nazi music from video games
Uhm nherr *snort* euuh it's honor not "honour" ehehe *snort*
So is the last Japanese one
I like how this says OST Album #1, thereby implying there may be more. Hopefully a future album will include suitably Soviet Russian music for the Red Army soldier that tried to kill Klaus.
Here's the sequel: czcams.com/video/Zs2W2LXzfLw/video.html
"Atun-Shei Films OST" is never something I thought I would read but I'm very happy I did lol
Fun fact for those who don't know; Klaus' theme originated from Atun-Sheis film "Alien, baby!"
An excuse to watch all the videos again. Listening for leitmotifs to be orchestrated later....
Pretty weird movie too!
Also, either it or the audiobook of The Fall of Alla-Xul is the origin of Atun-Shei.

16:57 Ceafe that infernal mufic, for mufic is the fign of devil worfhip. filent contemplation of the Holy Bible is all that if needed.
"And as always, remember that ye are a guilty sinner, unworthy of God's love. Thou livest like a winter tree, fit only to be cut down and burned. Spend thy life in silent contemplation, and hope the Lord may see fit to show mercy upon thy wretched soul." The Witchfinder General, 1683.

To be fair, Puritans in New England enjoyed music but typically as congregationalist singing of the psalms. Many of their psalms are based on secular melodies of the time so make of that what you will.
"“It is a New Way … it gives disturbance, roils and exasperates men’s spirits … the names given to the notes are bawdy, yea blasphemous … their good fathers that were strangers to it are got to Heaven without it. And therefore what need for all this adoo and pudder for nothing? … a contrivance to get money … they spend too much time about learning … tarry out a nights disorderly.”
I read some of the comments with the Witchfinder’s voice. I think I might need help.

21:28 Klaus's Theme
Original track created for the character/boss Klaus, Which is the last boss in the boss you face in Atun-Shei Games.
"The unique nature of this theme, only seen once in the game, Coupled with its powerful, intense prescence makes it a favorite for many, me included. When it was introduced, I felt like i was at the end of the journey, not a game, and when it picked up, so did the fight. It was the best moment of the game, when you finally end them, and liberate europe from nazi occupation. Overall, this Ost was 11 out of 10, but Klaus's Theme is easilly a 20 out of 10." - Johhny Reb, possessed by a Nazi
"The Quakers Will Burn In Europe Now!" - Witchfinder General
Couldn't say it better than Johhny, as everything he says about Klaus's Theme is true.

The 1861 overture is simply amazing and my hat is off to whoever composed it
Dude this is way deeper than a "wildly unpopular youtube channels" music has any right to be. The Checkmate Lilcolnites has a duel between Northern and Southern Music, almost like the show itself. The rest sound very much like Movie Themes but thats not an insult. Its good music.
Kudos dude
The 1861 Overture could put a tear in the eye of any Billy Yank or Johnny Reb. Well done!
Heureka! The glorious historian hath bestoeth us with his grande collection of Musik!
(don't whine about my bad impression of historic English, I'm litteraly a native German speaker)
God the finale to 1861 is really fantastic and awe-inspiring. The whole piece is a great reimagining of the 1812 Overture set to the songs of the American Civil War, such a great original track, Derosa is a really good composer.
You are, single-handedly, the reason why the Northern version of Dixie is now my default.
This does bring a smile to my face!

I love the Marching Through Georgia section of the 1861 Overture. It's the best version I ever heard!

The 1861 Overture is an awesome ripoff of the 1812 Overture and I love it.
Oh yes Daddy, hit me with that good. The Lord has truly smiled upon us tonight.
This is the first time in ages that I've sat and listened to this much music at once - and "new" stuff too. Credit to Mr. DeRosa.

"madly grinning johnny reb" is my favourite atun-shei face you need to trademark it lol
With this album, the Atun-Shei lore/universe is getting deeper and deeper
Marching Through Georgia in the style of a grand European waltz, absolutely beautiful. If Sherman came out of the Austrian Alps, proud and terrible.
Hurrah, Hurrah, we bring the symphony
Hurrah, Hurrah, the string that makes you flee
So we played the main theme from the alpines to the sea
While we were marching through Austria
- Napoleon, 1803
Y’know the other day I thought of recording the entire OST and publishing it but I figured you’d come in and have it covered, I was right, thank you kindly.
Hole-ly-shit. This is so damn good. I never thought that Dixie and Glory could be merged into one epic battle theme and turned into a symphony! It almost tells a story, with Dixie being the south declaring independence and seceding from the union with loud and hopeful music, that turns sour and grim with what that actually stands for, and what it meant for the slaves. Then things slowly gain from there, until, BAM! The Union invades, and the war has begun! I love how from there you can almost hear the themes of the two opposing forces clashing with one another!
Can I just say, I was here when your channel was tiny, and is fuc*ing awesome (excuse my French) to see what you have done with the channel. It is epic man and love watching each new vid. Congrats and keep up the awesome work. Sincerely, a fellow history nerd and filmmaker :)
You don’t write too badly.
Thank you! I’ve had trouble finding the Witch-Finder General’s theme in the shire in which I dwell
If this was an actuall vinyl, Goddam I would put it on a voyager space craft
Consider this he puts it on wax cylinder
I'm pretty sure NASA would be happy to get this made on vinyl if you agree to give them a good look at the ship you're planning to use for the trip out there. Or if that's a Noninterference Directive issue, at least haul along a few "small" upgrade packages for Voyager, shouldn't be more than a few tons.

How fantastic, was always looking for a vinyl album featuring music of a deranged Confederate, German, and an insane 17th Century man! Seriously though, what fantastic work by Dillon DeRosa! Just purchased this on Apple Music.
This is not the video I was expecting, but I am so glad we have it. Thank you lanky history man.
This sounds real and not MIDI. God that must have been expensive. Worth it. Hats off to the composer/arranger
Klaus Theme sounds somehow familiar, like if John Williams had a bad dream....
Could not have come at a better time. Writing about the lost cause for my history class. Perfect background music.
Just when I thought you hit your peak, you keep subverting my expectations.
Holy shit these are actually really good songs.
Ngl, "The Great Swamp" sounds like it belongs in an Elder Scrolls game or something, and I love it.
It reminds me a lot of the score of The Last of the Mohicans, which is probably what it was aiming for.
I was thinking Princess Mononoke.
I love the effort put into all these tracks. The Witchfinder General's Theme is absolutely enthralling every time I hear it. Fantastic score and character.
If this were actually on vinyl I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
16:55 really makes me realize that I am a wretched sinner, utterly unworthy of God's love. A fountain of pollution is deep within my nature and I live as a winter tree; unprofitable, fit only to be hewn down and burned. It really motivates me to steep my life in prayer, and hope that God sees fit to show mercy on my corrupted soul.
