    The reason the season felt disjointed, and why the finale felt like a midseason finale is because this episode was meant to be the penultimate episode van talked about that’s a tradition for thrones.
    Shortly before hotd wrapped up filming hbo decided to cut the last two episodes for the season, and the budget along with it, then 2 months later the writers nd actors strike started, so they didn’t have enough time for proper rewrites and reshoots
    The last 2 episodes that we were supposed to get now got repurposed as the first 2 episodes for season 3

    the directors literally integrated 'A Christmas Carol' into a "Ghosts of Harrenhal' adaption with Daemonds story. I think that's genius, i just think it could've been executed better.

And, I don’t think me or Chuck is looking at HOTD through the lens of GOT. It’s not that. But, this ending is vastly diff from how we ended season 1. AND, the mere fact that the writers wanted it to be 10 episodes confirms the feelings of many.

  • @watermage25
    @watermage25 Před měsícem +31

    The finale was good, if it was like the 8th episode of a 10 episode season. This season as many have rightly criticized was filled with filler. The number of battles they could have included in this season that was built as a season of war, its so disappointing that they only did one. The guys on the left were not listening to the criticisms the guys on the right levied. Like yo, listen, instead of being offended by it.

    • @Regenmacher175
      @Regenmacher175 Před měsícem +6

      It was not filler because those moments inform the characters and set up things that become important later. They are breather episodes that are necessary because if everything is a big epic climax it doesn't mean anything without the connective tissue. Episodes 4 and 7 are great because they built up to those. GOT had a big battle episode every second season and those seasons had 10 episodes each. After season 8 of GOT a bunch of people (not me) demanded that these shows take more time to explore the characters instead of moving from climax to climax. I didn't necesarily feel that this was something that was lacking with the final season but I also appreciate the slower-paced episodes where the focus is on the characters and what they're going through. Now this show does exactly that and people are still not satisfied. The showrunner has already said that they pushed a big battle to season 3 because they wanted to do it justice but couldn't do so with the means they had left at their disposal for season 2 (I don't know if they weren't given enough episodes to fit that in or if it is a question of financial limitations, probably the latter). This is to say that, at some point, I can't take those complaints seriously anymore.

    I loved this finale and agree with Van. I think the season was great and the finale paid off what was set up within this season - I really think the people who are disappointed in the finale had convinced themselves there would be a huge major battle this season based on the book and misinterpreting interviews.
    Most of the criticism I've heard of this finale was, "but I wanted to see a battle!" Sure, but I don't think any major battles were set up for the back half of this season, so it would have come out of nowhere. The one major criticism that I do agree with more is the amount of time spent with the triarchy.

    39:22 again agreeing with Charles somehow. The Rivermen do not like Daemon. I love the Daemon Rhaenyra scene, however, why would the Rivermen not show more respect immediately when last episode it seemed clear they were honoring their oath to Viserys amd his heir, and not Daemon, but now show deference to Daemon.

    The showrunners already said that they had to push back a big battle to season 3 because they felt like they could not do it justice in the way they thought it deserved with the financial limitations that they had after having to spend so much money on the dragon fight at Rook's Rest and the Red Sowing. They didn't want to underdeliver on this huge battle so it is what it is imo. Episode 8 is a breather and that's fine if the acting, writing, etc. is great and imo they were. I think people need to check their expectations ('what do I want from this show?') and keep them in check ('is it reasonable for me to demand that the show do big epic moments at each and every turn all the time?').

      Tbh I don’t know how people couldn’t ascertain that themselves. You can tell by the CGI this episode that they were low on money. They’ve had to do so many dragons already, they couldn’t possibly do another fight that would almost have to have multiple dragons.

When the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms enters the great hall and no one kneels is massive sign of disrespect and that there loyalty lies elsewhere. I don’t understand why people complain about all the prophecy stuff with Daemon. I guess I can blame GOT for that because it wasn’t emphasised enough how driven the people in the story are by prophecy. There wouldn’t be HOTD or GOT without the prophecy that sent the Targs to Dragonstone from old Valyria in the first place. Aegon conquered Westeros because of prophecy. A character abruptly changing the course of their life because of prophecy isn’t even unusual in the story - see Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark. The Mad King was driven by prophecy, so was his daughter, Dany. So too were Stannis, Melissandra, Euron Greyjoy, Bran Stark, even Cersi thanks to the woods witch. I think awakening the “dreamer” in Daemon was brilliant writing and as a book reader who loves to dive deep into the lore, this is exactly the sort of thing I’ve been waiting for.

  • @TheRulersBack18

    on one hand i agree that this should've been a 9-10 episode season instead of an 8 episode season, but on the other hand, chuck is talking outta his ass (as usual i guess) bc you know damn well if they spent an episode showing all 3 new dragon riders learning how to ride a dragon, he'd be making jokes and saying how it was a filler episode
    some of this stuff is pretty damn simple. rhaenrya chose addam bc: 1. he immediately stated his loyalty, 2. she knows addam served under corlys, and she's gotten his appraisal of him, 3. she doesn't want jace in any possible danger (unclear of daemon's motives, jace is the heir, etc.), 4. she obviously can't trust ulf, 5. she doesn't know hugh's background at all, not to mention the relationship between vermithor/silverwing vs syrax/seasmoke.
    the lannister bit definitely makes this feel like more of an episode 7-8 of 10 than a season finale though.
    anyway, van is right, any complaints about this episode are essentially complaints about the season as a whole...daemon's journey taking too long (necessary bc it had to be unclear whose side he was on until after rhaenyra got the 3 dragon riders, but still a valid point), not enough time with the dragon riders (kinda unavoidable bc there are freaking 3 of them, but still a valid point), alicent's journey being too abrupt (after some consideration, i think her journey is basically fine, even though we didn't need to see her floating in a lake), the whole lannister bit happening in the finale (just not enough episodes, otherwise, this is a fun little bit away from the main characters that we would ordinarily enjoy)

    For Charles, you've fundamentally misunderstood who Daemon is. It's not that his entire character changes because of one vision. His entire point is to be this personification of the conflict between loyalty and one's own desires. He loved his brother and was ferociously loyal to protecting him and their legacy. He completely denied the importance of his brother's obsession with visions and thus saw this attachment to uniting the realm because of a vision as the largest issue that made his reign as king weak. He wanted their legacy to continue and thought the only way that would be possible would be through his strength as the true blood of the dragon, no matter how much he loved his wife/niece. These visions and the final ultimate prophecy vision have completely realign what he believes is important. He sees now that his brother was the only one that was seeing things clearly. He now needs to be the man he was always supposed to be and that was the man who protected his brother's legacy and his decision.
    We took a long time to get there, I agree. But as much as I've come to understand about George's characterization of Daemon, him needing all this to convince him is absolutely aligned with his character and gave him a renewed sense of purpose. It mattered

    Correction: we meet Ulf in episode 2 after Aegon hanged the ratcatchers. He is seen stealing from someone else and then asks why the ratcatchers had been hanged. That is meant to indicate that he's a somewhat dubious person because he stole something just in passing and very casually. He's then seen passing himself off as a bastard son of Balon and when pushed on it later, he is forced to admit that he as not sure...he just wanted everyone to buy him drinks. He's not special, probably deep down knows he's not special and now all of a sudden gains a dragon. What does gaining a dragon do to someone like that? He immediately shows off because he thinks he's gotten confirmation that he's hot shit now. The transition seems believable to me.

      Charles is on his BS again. He was complaining all season about the peasants and not paying attention and now he wants a peasant show.
      Hes triggered because he doesn't like the mirror.

      There's almost no transition. The way Ulf acts when he gets a dragon is totally consistent with his established character.

      @m.a.p.5541 no. I watched the show. Guy was a chill underachieving drunk then got a dragon an is suddenly a self entitled egotistical prick.
      Writers should have fleshed out the character and showed the transition from chill drunk bar guy with his buddies to an self-important ass.

    Kind of crazy to complain about Daemon’s story this season when the book has nothing saying what he does during this time. Should he have been left off the show this season then? They had to be completely creative. Van is right. They wanted more battles and action. One book vs five finished ones means a lot of “filler” to make up.

    I think she picks Addam because he immediately bent the knee and perhaps because Syrax can do better against Seasmoke if ever Addam were to attack. They are similar in size and Rhaenyra remains the most experienced rider. Condal said the saddles are installed when the dragons are young.

      He didn’t really do anything except direct episodes that no one could see and try to shoehorn his wife into a producer role for no reason.
      He wasn’t involved in the writing or anything.
