Magic the Gathering Alter Tutorial: Wrath of God

- A brief video on how I alter Magic the Gathering cards, start to finish. In this episode we do a border extension on a 9th Edition Wrath of God. Things I used:
- Torn up cardboard box to mix colours on
- A couple small brushes from the dollar store
- Sand paper
- A cup of water
- Reeves pack of 10 colours acrylic paint tubes

I remember making a forest and a swamp alter as a kid and looking back at them.. they are pretty atrocious. Kind of want to make some new alters to see how they go now and this is a really informative video that is super helpful! Might even step it up to some real cards rather than just basic lands aha

I know this has been 4 years but if you happen so see this comment, would you be so kind to tell me if you use any kind of acrilycs fixation spray on the finished card, so the paint wont be scraped off later? Do you use that on your finished altered cards?

Do you ever use acrylic gloss as a finish at all or would that be too much layering?

Cheers :) I have, but I haven't found appropriate tape yet that's easy to use in tight spaces!
@@PieterSneep A simple tape could be used to be honest :) I use a regular one for my alters ! You "just need to" cut the tape with a knife or so to put it on the box space :)
But hey, not forced to obviously, you are doing a great job anyways ! It could just erase the no fun police time with the toothpick :')

Hi, i have a small question. I started doing this and i bought the cheapest acrylic paint there is. When i apply it, it really doesn't cover te card, i can see trough it. It needs 4-5 layers of paint until i don't see any lines anymore. Is this because of the cheap paint or because i didn't sand the card before painting? And what grid of sandpaper do you use? Many thanks.
Hi! Different brands and types of acrylic paints have different pigment levels and thickness. I've had dollar store brands that were adequate and dollar store brands that were useless. I recommend going for types of acrylics labelled student level or better. They seem to hold up well (I use Reeves acrylics, some student level, some of better quality). The other factor is transparency of your paints. Some brands label whether their colours are transparent or opaque, others leave it up to the name of the colour and there is a bit of a learning curve to learn which colour names indicate opaque or transparent. "Pthalo Blue" and "crimson" for example are known to be a transparent colours, while "titanium white", "cadmium yellow" and "bright red" are usually opaque. As for sandpaper I've been using 120 and 200 as my types! Hope it helps :)
Good quality paints will have opacity charts printed on the tubes. You gotta go the extra mile to do a little research on opacity and lightfastness. It’ll pay off in ridding yourself of frustration, grief and wasting money.
how long does it normally take you to do these alters?
Heya! It depends on the card, sometimes the colors are really hard to mix and it takes 2-3 hours, sometimes they're easy and it goes a little quicker. This Wrath of God took about 1,5 hours iirc :) hope it answers your question!

It looks like you are using pretty small amounts of water, is it only for cleaning the brusa or do you ever thin the paint?
Im a bit frustrated by how quickly the paint dries on the pallet when im painting. You dont seem to have any issues with this. How Come? Am i missing anything?

Never too late! If you want the paint to dry slower, try some slow-dry mediums for acrylics. Some can make change the aspects of your paint a little bit, like more glossy or more matte, and sometimes mediums can be a bit sticky on the cards. But get yourself some quality slowdry medium from a proper art store and you should be good. Plus, sometimes mediums look expensive but one bottle of medium usually lasts a long time since you only need very little doses of it. Thanks for checking out the channel and good luck painting!
Great job. A lot of skill here. Personally not sure why anyone would do this, though, unless they don’t know how to use a graphic design program or just don’t want to. Perhaps they just really enjoy painting.
I have mtg cards but I don’t buy them. I print them out. I just slightly modified the pre-existing mtg card template. I’ve never liked the mtg card template art for any of their cards. So I kept the same shape/look I just got rid of all the extra outlines and texture image thats on the template. Made it a clean flat color design. Found some better icons for the mana symbols and just replaced the expansion symbol with my first names initial. Below the power and toughness I added my graphics design logo instead. I moved all the flavor text below the text box so the text box only has the cards ability(s). Found two versions of the font mtg uses for the title and subtitle boxes. I used a cleaner font for the text box area.
Overall anyone can tell it’s a magic card because I didn’t overhaul the cards template just cleaned them up. Took the art and put it where it goes and printed my cards. The artifacts or colorless cards are the only ones I modified the most. I put a transparent gear icon in the text box and gears in the corner of the art box and switched the color a little. Even though I didn’t do too much, it still took a few days to get all the cards official images and re-type everything for each card. I’ve done about 300+ cards so far.
Once printed I sleeved them with dragon shield sleeves that I got as a bonus when I bought a card lot of Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions from eBay.
This was my first introduction to ds sleeves. I like them but I don’t like the price. There are just as good sleeves out there that have a higher sleeve count with equal durability for far cheaper. They just don’t have the famous rough backside that ds sleeves have. To me ds sleeves are good for what they’re commonly used for which is heavy play and tournaments but as for regular board game use not so much. For print and play games as far as prototypes go, they’re great. Overall they didn’t blow me away but I do plan to buy some for more mtg printed cards.

What does the back of the card look like? Your technique looks like it would leave smudges on the back of the card
Heya! The back is fine, it got a few smudges on it during the process but a moist brush cleans it up. If you want a cleaner way of doing it you can gently tape the backside edges to a piece of cardboard and you should be good to go :)
