    Great video man, I have a 2023 Spur and I just love that bike ❤️.
    Question, did you bottom out at any time during your rides in the bike park?
    Thanks, keep the good videos coming 👍

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I didn’t have any harsh bottom outs at the park except in the fork on one of the bigger hits. The front of the bike does seem to get out gunned sooner than the rear. But it did take a pretty significant hit, and another volume reducer would likely help

    Great riding! And awesome review!
    Regarding the tire recommendations, I haven’t tried the Forekaster yet, so your nudge is just what I needed. I do prefer the dhrii to the dissector out front as you describe.
    You said rekon race rear, is that correct, or just “rekon” (as pictured)? Thx!

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Sorry, I should have clarified more… I was running a DHR2 front and Rekon rear. Partly because it’s what I had laying around, and trails are still sloppy right now. The Forekaster / Rekon Race setup would be the ultimate lightweight or drier conditions setup IMO.

    Awesome video! Hemp lock is my favorite trail in kanuga. How would you compare the spur to the Norco fluid ?

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks, and same here! The Fluid is noticeably heavier and not as fast, but may be better for someone looking for a 1-bike solution. The Fluid I tested is the nicest one available and still slid in at over 31 lbs. The Spur is 27 lbs with heavier downhill tires, and that difference is noticeable. The Smuggler or even Sentinel make very compelling 1-bike solutions as well. The Smuggler I custom built in the shop was well under 30 lbs, but is on-par with the capability of the Fluid. This reply makes me sound like a weight-weenie... I'm really not, but when you consider how light Transition frames are compared to other brands, it's worth noting, especially when the Spur is in the conversation. For those who may read this, Norco Fluid review czcams.com/video/HlVY7IsIuLg/video.html.

    I'm debating a medium or large. I'm 5'9 and my current sb140LR in M fits perfect with 460mm reach. How does the M spur feel?

  • @ColoradoGooner

    Excellent riding and super informative review. Curious what the spec is? And any thoughts on whether 130mm would improve things or stick to 120mm?

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks! The only updated model they have for now is the X0 Transmission build which is what is shown here and on their website. If it were me, I would ride it for a while with the 120mm fork and see how it went. That being said, I’ve never been afraid to go 10mm longer with a fork in the past on bikes that I felt like could use it. The front end of the Spur does get out gunned before the rear end. For me, I’ll most likely keep this bike and I’ll most likely keep it at 120mm. The nice thing about the Fox 34 specd on this bike is that you can easily swap the air spring.

  • @RandyRIII
    @RandyRIII Před 2 měsíci

    How does it compare to the Smuggler? Is there enough separation to change from a smuggler type bike to this spur (specced with 130mm)? Thanks for the review!

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Here's my Smuggler first impression... czcams.com/video/1uHDacLmahQ/video.html. I never got around to doing a long-term review on it. The Smuggler, in the stock configurations, slides in over 30lbs and is noticeably more capable and noticeably heavier. I sort of "down built" my Smuggler and got it down to 28 lbs with really light wheels and tires. In that configuration, the spread between the two bikes is definitely less. The Spur still wins out in snappiness due to those flex stays. The Smuggler is a very hard to beat all-arounder though.

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I'm personally sold on the large, but simultaneously wish that the reach was closer to 470 instead of 480. Medium patently feels too small for my preference. It is a tough call at our height, and I wish Transition would actually shorten the reach of every size slightly, and add a size at the top of the size chart which would help folks not be in the middle of sizes quite as much.

    Can someone explain to me how the 2020 builds were ~25lbs and the 2024 builds are ~27lbs? I can't for the life of my figure out how or why.

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  Před 21 dnem +1

      It was spec’d with a step cast Fox 34 which is noticeably lighter than the standard Fox 34 spec’d now. Additionally, the current SRAM AXS Transmission drivetrain is heavier than X01 mechanical but quite a bit. Those 2 things alone probably account for the difference

    • @quinncolby
      @quinncolby Před 2 měsíci

      Sort of. I took my Ripmo & my Spur to Moab. Ripmo for blacks & double blacks. The bike is so forgiving. The Spur was for the fast blues & longer rides. Both great but if you don’t live in a place like Moab you don’t need a 145/160 bike most days.

  • @REB4444
    @REB4444 Před 2 měsíci +3

    Everyone loves their bikes because there are so many short-travel trail bikes that are excellent. But I'm going to say, '"Nah!". I've tested the Spur & I have to say, the Pivot Trail 429 is IT. It climbs just as well, somewhere in between the Ripley & the Spur, but is more capable than the Spur on the downhill AND more agile. It accomplishes all this without having to resort to flex stays which work in most conditions but also brings in a flexy feel or bob in chatter. The Spur is amazing going up & going down for a short travel trail bike because it uses its length & slackness for stability, but that also penalizes you in slower twistier terrain. It feels like a bigger bike when it comes to agility compared to the 429 or the Ripley or even the Tallboy. I have yet to bottom out my 429 in the 18 months I've had it. The 429 isn't as bottomless as the Tallboy, but it is a lot plusher than the Ripley or Spur. It's the purple squirrel of short-travel trail bikes.

      You either heard the analogy of the state of mountain bike tech from 10 years ago, or you didn't. Not trying to debate who considers what old. I'm well aware of the origins of the sport.
