Transition's new Smuggler is back from the dead, and it's phenomenal

- There has been a mysterious hole in Transition’s line up since 2020. There's the do-everything Sentinel (aka Send-it-all). The astonishingly capable and light-weight Spur. And of course the enduro-ready Spire, which might as well be a pedalable downhill bike. So what does Transition have for those of us who aren't looking to send it all, or wear spandex, or pedal a downhill bike around?
Well, now they’ve got the Smuggler, and we think it’s their coolest bike yet!

What rear hub does the bike that appears in the video have on?
Would be nice if you guys actually answered some of the questions.
@@matiagachaelomocom Hey Mati, sorry, missed your question. It is a fairly generic Race Face hub, the Trace hub. 36 points of engagement, steel axle. Just a sturdy, inexpensive hub.
- Dan at Fanatik
@@ZRMTB Sorry about that, are there any in particular that you're curious about?
- Dan P
@@FanatikBikeCo Hey Dan. Thanks for replying haha. Any idea if Transition would be making changes to internal rear brake cable routing on future bikes?
Thanks again!
Rumor has it Logan stayed up late on his birthday just to bring you this incredible video
It was my bday yesterday
Came for the Smuggler, stayed for video guy!!
Phenomenal video! The mix of riding and interviewing - 👌. Please, use this video guy more as the tester in your future productions - he's extremely fun to watch, very skilled and seems to truly enjoy himself on this kind of a bike - he uses it like a musecal virtuoso uses his musical instrument. Very inspiring!
@Logan Patrick Nelson really well done Logan!
Inspiring, playful, inventive, and enjoy seeing sequences of multiple attempts to make an idea come to life!
A really refreshing mountain bike video, that video guy is a real treat! He should be in Pink Bike Academy.
Logan for CEO of Pinkbike!! (I assume that's a democratically elected position?)
Great bike. On my radar. Good luck selling a $3700 frame only in 2023 and on.
Great video! Even if the puddle drain was selfish 😂
awesome, love TR and the crew!
This was such a cool video about such a sweet new bike!!!
Awesome work Fanatik Crew and Transition
After a long hiatus from mountain biking , stopped riding when there was still only 26" wheels.Came back to it in 2014 with a Specialized Camber Evo, 29" hoops 120mm travel f&r. That bike was so much fun.
Video guy can flat out rip a bike. What a great update to the lineup!
This is just a great video from start to finish. The riding, the filming, the inside knowledge from the Transition guys, that amazing Smuggler...
Loved it... And it just made me wanna go ride my bike!
ended up going with a Vitus as my next rig but Transition was Def on top of my list also. Hands down, has some of the nicest looking bikes out there.
Great video guys, awesome crew and cool new bike
Thanks Chris!
Ooh! That hardtail on the back wall of the design room looks niiiiiiice!
Unreal video boys 👊
The first edition of the smuggler got me so stoked on riding again. I still ride one today, glad they are keeping a good thing going.
It was such an awesome bike. This one is better though!!
Cheers - DP
I like seeing Logan on this side of the camera. 👍
Content has leveled up recently! Nice work gang
Thanks Jeremy! We've been doing our best!
Cheers,
Dan, Logan, and the rest of the team at Fanatik
Love the bronze color!
Nice brand placement Sam 💙
Your new rider is awesome
Really good review
Dam it... I love the bike I ride (2022 Orbea Occam) which I got because it was so wonderfuly middle of the range and now Transition brings out this bike... I soooo want one!!!!
Logan rips! Get him in front of the camera. He rides like a champ, fun to watch!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Also, love the failed attempts in the edit. Such a down to earth vibe that is motivating
Great video
Get well soon ,greetings from germany 🤙Logan well done 👍
Thanks Martin, I appreciate it! Getting better slowly but surely.
- Dan P
Logan is a rad dude!!
Thank you so much for this video!! I currently love (and daily ride) my 2015 Smuggler, but have been looking for its replacement. Wanting to stay with the Transition brand, I have been tossing around the idea of the new Spur, but wanted a bit more... Was so excited to see this new Smuggler but was going to wait til next year, for a new color way. After seeing them here, I actually like the colors a lot!! Now it may be time to dust off the credit card!!
I think both the colors are quite nice, although that of course is entirely subjective. We've got the frame loaded up into our Bike Builder, if you're curious how it looks built up different ways.
Cheers, Dan

A really well edited video. And videographer can rip!
Saw the clip on JKW channel, glad you’re okay. Excited to pick up a smuggler to go with my sentinel!
Thanks ya'll. Still got a bit of a limp (and the bruise has actually gotten crazier) but I am okay.
If you've already got a Sentinel and are looking at a second bike, I'd push you towards the Spur. Have you ridden one? Reason being I think the Sentinel is actually a great all-around bike (can hit the bike park, ride trail, etc), whereas the Spur really accentuates the things that make the Smuggler really fun. Or to put it a different way, I think the Smuggler is more of a "one-bike-to-do-it-all" than the Sentinel, and the Sentinel would be nicely complemented by the Spur.
One caveat to that would be if you wanted to sell your Sentinel and only have one bike, in which case the Smuggler is where it's at.
Hopefully that is helpful and doesn't add to the indecision!!
- Dan P.
@@danp5812 Reviving this comment... I currently have a Spur. What bike would you suggest to best compliment that for the PNW? Sentinel or Spire?
love that color scheme
BK in the bushes and mud in the ear…taking one for the team!
This thing looks awesome and the video was great. Cant wait to see some comparisons against the ripley, trail 429 or tallboy
None of those bikes are in this bikes category.
The old Smuggler GX was the most fun bike I've ever ridden. I hope this one lives up to that.
It does!
"A mountain bike for mountain biking" heck yes this is what the people want
Haha you caught that? 🤣
Finally, right?!?
😁 Cheers! - Dan at Fanatik
"Most of us don't wear spandex, want to send it all or eat rock gardens for breakfast." Sitting here with an Epic Evo and an Insurgent park bike feeling personally attacked. Great vid, the trail pics make me miss the PNW! The new smuggler looks like an awesome do it all and the sentiment of the vid is right. I used to own an Evil Following with 140/120 and it had that magic fun factor on nearly every trail until you got to the REALLY gnarly stuff. I reached for it most rides.
The Following is an awesome bike. I had one also, bought it for a lighter option than my Sentinel, and same thing, ended up riding it the majority of the time.
Cheers - Dan
Lols just saw you crashed on the side of the trail in the Jeff Kendleweed vid yesterday. Glad you’re ok.
Thanks!
Que bike linda! Um sonho de consumo... abraço do Brasil
Hey, Sweet Tofitian hat on Darrin!
I rode my Spur at Whistler this summer and it was actually really fun :)
Hahaha 5% Whistler still counts! What trails did you ride?
@danp5812 pretty much all the greens and blues - it was great on crank it up, c'more, H of D, Ninja Cougar, karate monkey, etc. I was tempted to try a few blacks, but I decided not to push my luck.
Que bike linda! Possuir uma dessas , só em sonho.... Um abraço do Brasil
Wait... is this JKW Logan? Great vid, what a cool bike!
@Logan Patrick Nelson Hahaha sick!! And nice riding!
How does everyone feel about the internal rear brake line routing?
Having the rear brake line externally routed was one of the things I loved about Transition frames.
I prefer external routing. Swapping brakes doesn't happen often but the choice to do it would be a lot easier with external routing.
Yeah same here the externally routed rear brake is my preference. But for the majority of people who don’t work on their own bikes the internally routed option is more appealing
Perfect!
External
Saw Jeff's vid where he found you guys on the trail. Good to see your ok!
Did I miss the travel numbers or is that not officially released yet?
130mm rear, easily bumped to 140mm by removing a spacer in the stock shock or running a different one, and 140mm fork.
Cheers,
Dan P.
So good cable routing now. The Spur has cables running right on top of the crank axel which was ridiculous.
This actually does too. They're just internal. It's also not an issue, because that axle has a plastic cylinder around it, so the cables would never actually touch it as it spins.
- Dan P
The bike is fine, but Logan and Dan are the real stars
Hahaha, thanks Forrest. The bike is really good, but at the end of the day it's the rider that makes the bike, and Logan is a phenomenal rider!
Cheers,
DP
hey @fanatik any ideas what the max insertion is on a large? details seem to be missing from the site, also how does the dropper cable work? is it fully internal and just pops out on the seat tube or is it still a fishing game to get it out?
sounds absolutely awsome
now the price
Was pretty set on getting a norco optic but now idk this thing looks sick
It is 😁
Better than transitions launch video
Very different. I really enjoyed theirs. There's a ton of easter eggs to be found!
Thanks for the compliment! - Dan P.
Bring that ,,video guy,, infront of you cameras he's rippin💪🦖🦖
That bruise is insane.
Believe it or not the part on my inner thigh has gotten significantly larger. Bleh.
- Dan
Logan is a freakin sender!
If they sell an alloy frameset I’ll be picking one up. Otherwise I can’t justify 4k on the NX build. I’ll be sticking to my GT Force… for now.
Fair enough, the Force is a fun bike! I *believe* they will only be offering the alloy model as a complete.
- Dan P
Damn, "video guy", why so shreddy?
Great watching ! 👍
Where the bottom of the shock mounts won't that hold dirt and wear out that area over time?
Nothing against Transition as one day I'd like to own one, but the Specialized Stumpjumper has been this bike since the 90's. Something is still missing...
That "plum" smuggler is hot!!!
This video made me swaller a hotdog whole!
@loganatfanatik yes
Love video guy, and I'd send him dozens of cookies for free!
I want one so bad
Are these heavier than say the Union? What might this be with BERD?
Would you guys test bikes with polar wheelset extremes? Maybe a crap bike and phenomenal one. I'm wondering how big a difference a wheelset is to the spec.
My mind says it might be a close second to the front fork.
am I missing something... but where are the holes near the bottom shock mount for the dirt/moisture to go away?
I don't get how you can make that in 2023
not a Trek uber fan, but look at the new Fuel EX or even AL Patrol... I don't get why you remove those holes on carbon version
If a get a coil, (currently have an RS Ult 2021 one). the rebound knob is near the bottom shock mount and it literally would bathe there
I mean... maybe it does not provide lots of benefits for someone, but it does for me :) and that's a deal breaker
Own a spur already great bike this one looks proper good but stuff £3700 for the frame only. Transition obviously ignoring the current market issues
No Logan the bike isn't floating... you're just an awesome rider😂
Logan looks like a Jesse Melamed x Jackson Goldstone hybrid lol
We need more video guy content!
Dan - you ok?
Saw you on Jeff-Kendal Weed’s vids, your leg was injured pretty badly!
I am okay, thanks for asking. Pretty unfortunate, but it happens. Could have been worse.
- Dan
Quadzilla over here hanging out in his undies ! Haha . Thanks for Review
I think those quads saved me from a broken femur 😬
Cheers, thank you for watching!
- Dan P.
Ran here as soon as I saw JKW's video. Lol!
A bike to actual be ridden
Who's that serious guy playing Darrin's role?
Kudos Transition, NO headset cable debauchery. A bike company that actually cares about their customers!
How would you guys compare this to, say, a SC 5010?
Largely, quite similar. Same travel, very similar geometry. The 5010 is a mullet bike, so may feel a little tighter in corners. It also uses their VPP suspension platform, which has its nuances. Listen to what Logan says about coming from his Tallboy to this bike though, that'll give you some insight.
- Dan P
Any thoughts on how this compares to the Stumpjumper 130/140? I ride in the Midwest and do not have the ability to demo a Smuggler.
I haven't extensively ridden a Stumpy, just demo bikes a handful of times. But based on that experience, I preferred the Smuggler. Felt more peppy pedaling and pumping, and would be more fun on less steep terrain. Felt equally as good on the descents. - Logan at Fanatik (video guy)
It is a very similar bike. It is less flexy (but also heavier) than a Stumpjumper, and I would say it errs slightly on the more aggressive side of things, where as the Stumpjumper is better suited for slightly mellower trails. If you weigh over 190lbs or push your bike really hard, this might be a better option just because it is less flexy. If not, I'd say pick either!
- Dan P.
I love video guy
can't believe that's his natural hair color
What travel range bike do you think is best?
- Dan P
Any answers to how you can replace cables and housing without needing to remove the bottom bracket??
Cause it’s fully guided internally. The tubes ideally if they designed it well should pul your casing where it needs yo be
The riding and people make the video. I just find it hard getting excited over a Horst link design. Rinsed and repeated over and over in the 21st century.
The bottle rocket was the bike that killed it and put them on the map
Yep. That bike was rad. Terrible, but rad.
- Dan P
I knew I recognized you from Jeff Kendall Weed channel
Transition make great looking bikes but I hate when bike brands don't give the option to route the rear brake line on the driveside. Instantly makes the cables messy.
I wonder though, it looks like the cables come out a window just after the BB before entering the rear triangle. Is it possible to just cross the cables there?
@Vic only if you run an AXS seapost because you only have 1 port on the driveside.
2 each side with different grommets to give the required number of exits is how it's done best IMO.
YES!! (thats it)
Would be great if you can buy just the frame and build your own bike
You can build one to your liking via our bike builder! Currently have a M, L, & XL in stock. www.fanatikbike.com/products/bike-builder
Around 9:20, the orange helmet he’s wearing… what is it?
www.fanatikbike.com/products/smith-forefront-2-mips-helmet?variant=39689058091054
Smith Forefront 2
stumpjumper or smuggler?
I just looked at the geometry and this can't be true 72 degrees STA for a 65 degree HTA?
How tall are you guys and what size were you riding?
I'm 5ft 7 and it was a medium, fit perfect. - Logan at Fanatik
Little late to the comments..but what size would you suggest for 5,9 with a 6 ' wingspan..I'm thinking large ..I'm on a 475 reach bike now ..
kinda like the sc tallboy
Lol I watched that video before this and I was like waaaiiitt haha
@loganatfanatik I shot myself then I woke up
This bike should always have some purple-ish colorway to facilitate plum smuggler jokes.
I wonder how the smuggler would ride if you did bump it up to a 140/150 or 160
That's the Sentinel!!
how does it jump?
@Logan Patrick Nelson Thank you Logan! Really appreciate the insights!
Not internal cable routing!!! They need to take a page from konas book, internal cables suck
I just hate to say it, the only reason why I didn’t get one is because it doesn’t have the down-tube storage, I love that bike but to me the glove box became a must.
Great video as always 👍👍👍
I like it. But man we have to talk about the prices. If you're a bike brand and your bike makes a Santa Cruz look cheap in comparison, you've done something seriously wrong.
So why (why why why) Transition doesn't design and make frames equipped with Pinion gearbox and belt drive ?
Not yet , but i intend to buy a Zerode this sumer
HOLY F***!!! That's a $4000.00 frame only ouch!!! With components thats a $10k-$16k bike
Yeah a mountain bike for the mountain biker.... we are known to have tons of cash to throw at bikes...
