Watched this movie high… almost had an existential crisis, and somehow I didn’t cry at the end (pretty close tho). All in all, watching the Truman show high was a great experience 😄

They mention how christopher is a reference to Christ (bit of a stretch) and Burbank is a city in California but they don’t mention how Truman is the only “True Man” in a city of actors?

It's even worse. Christof is a Christ figure *in his own mind,* but if you actually look at the role he is fulfilling in Biblical terms, he is actually the Satanic figure. The viewers are angels. They rejoice when Truman, after his baptism/rebirth rejects the World and chooses the unseen which lies beyond his world, but which he has always believed in.
Truman being the only true man is a nice wordplay but doesn't really mean anything about the philosophy of the movie, in my opinion. They can't say every quirky detail about it, it's not an essay
GinnGinevra it has more to do with philosophy than the other two references. I don’t believe the movie has anything specific to say about Christianity or Jesus specifically. It’s possible you can interpret an anti-Christian message because we’re supposed to be happy Truman wins in his rebellion against the architect of his life. Burbank doesn’t mean anything deep. What I do think the movie makes a statement on is people’s interest in genuine human interaction. I don’t have room to elaborate but at the end Christopher says “you were real, that’s why people loved you.”

Didn't Plato surmise that the person leaving the cave would be too overwhelmed with all of the colorful, 3D stimuli and would end up retreating back to the cave? But then since he saw too much, the other prisoners in the cave wouldn't believe him and he'd be the lowest wrung there, forever condemning him to a state of belonging nowhere? Kind of like where Truman REALLY will be when he steps outside to the real world?
I like to imagine he and that girl get together after, and naturally she helps him adjust, and they have kids and happily ever after bla bla you get it im still a man

In the name of JESUS CHRIST. Yes, Truman has a lot of self-discovering to do. I think he needs to hold off on getting into a relationship, he does not even know who he really is! They could have left her part of running down the stairs to greet him out, because they have a long road ahead of them! Hope they fell in love with the others' soul and not just looks. This movie tells us a lot about the world we are living in, how the government tries to play GOD, try to keep us living in an illusion, this movie should not be taken lightly. GOD BLESS.

The Truman show made me realize that going to work and watching sitcoms was a waste of my life, it inspired me to try to explore more of the world. The only thing Truman truly wanted was to explore and the whole world had that freedom but instead only sat at home to watch him live 24/7. As for the movie, I always thought that Truman would have a nervous breakdown after escaping because the entire world would be stalking him and he would never get a moment's piece ever again.
Not everyone in every 200 country watches a show he'd find a Fiji for himself.

I love this quote, me and my friends use it all the time
I think it's significant that Truman's "Cave" is one of light and his emergence is into a place of darkness. It's if he is leaving a place of enlightenment into a dark, harsh reality. Leaving a place of knowledge for a place that's unknown.
I relate to TRUE-MAN so much. When he later realized that everything he had originally known was a lie, he felt misunderstood, and frustrated. The people who surround me in my life almost act the same way the actors do in this film. They (sent from God as tests) try to keep me believing the system we are born into to is real, thinking that animals are delicious food, and that I should choose a political party to favor etc.... Anyway, CHRISTof did everything he could to keep him from the truth, as God does for humanity to see how dedicated we are. When Truman went on the journey for truth, he was hit with storms and other obstacles, then he finally found the truth though determination... The firmament that surrounds him (and us). Then Christof speaks with Truman, giving him permission to take in the truth, but nothing will be the same and even seem worse initially. As they say: the truth will first disturb you, then change you, then set you free. Truman was finally free after attaining all of this knowledge and found LOVE, which is depicted by the female character he chases in the film, but she represents love for himself! He finally learned how to love himself for the way he TRULY is, not what the actors created him to be. That's why it's so important to once and a while isolate yourself to learn more about yourself. Know thyself to love thyself.

The system IS a lie, built to rip off Average Joe and to keep him a self-punishing, financial slave.
Really good one. And a really good movie. Every time I watch it I'm reminded how thankful I am that they decided to make it tonally semi-serious, rather than out and out comedic, as would have been the studio's preference for a Carrey vehicle at the time. A great example of sticking to your guns when the studio execs have 'notes' and making a memorable classic rather than a forgettable dud that does reasonably well in theatres and is then relegated to Sunday afternoon TV or whatever the Netflix equivalent is (probably just 'Netflix'??).

What happens when you have to deal with overprotective parents? By far this is one of my favorite movies, if it is not the main one, and seeing that relationship that Christof has with Truman it's almost like a reflection of the relationship that I had for years with my parents (specially with my mom). Just think about it in case you have also experienced it, that control masked as love, that intention to influence every aspect of life and as one, in the end, either accept that bond as such, staying in that "cage", or breaking the chains and decide to fend for yourself.
