- The Truman Show is that rare film that feels even more relevant today than when it came out. The 1998 story about a man (Jim Carrey) who doesn’t know his life is being filmed and broadcast live to a large audience foreshadowed our present landscape of oversharing, which often encourages us to act like an audience is always watching. It also exposes how turning real life into entertainment can dehumanize people, and reminds us that privacy is a valuable, even essential component of an authentic life. I've read about this "digital footprint" that many parents are now creating for their kids, before they can even consent to it, like how people make public IG pages for their newborn babies. It will likely have weird, negative effects on this next generation of kids as they age.
I respect any parent who tries, in good faith, to keep their kid's lives private.
I dont know what people thought was going to happen. Yall ate up family sitcoms & reality TV, watched the 6th Sense and Shirley Temple and Dakota Fanning with glee, NOW yall wanna be shocked "oh deary me, kids being made famous and working in media? Where did this come from?!" But it was encouraged and internet fame was the next natural step. All you can do is work to make sure they are following child labor laws and let it go like people have done for a little over a century imho.

I don't think it's ethical for parents often influencers to show their children even babies on the internet. I don't understand how they can subject their children to online criticism and public attention when they can't make that choice being so young.

I agree that is super unethical and like Hal9000 stated (cool username) it's about money. Maybe they really need the money, and they will go to extreme lengths to make money-- however that doesn't stop it from feeling weird and icky knowing that there's a sense of exploitation, but hey, like the video pointed out people keep consuming, so they will keep going

@@HelloHello-tm7uc that's part of why I dont watch family channels. I've been tempted to get sucked in cause I'm totally a sucker for an adorable kid, but as soon as I started learning more about the behind the scenes situations, I made sure not to watch any of that content again

The Truman Show is such a beautiful analogy for spiritual awakening. Realizing that your entire life was a lie, overcoming your greatest fear (as symbolized by Truman's fear of water), and breaking through the illusion...into true reality.

My favorite line that stuck with me all these years was Christof answering the question of why Truman hadn't figured it out yet. He said, "We accept the reality with which we're presented." There was a cold, spine-tingling brilliance to that line that sticks. Ed Harris is one of the all time greatest actors ever.

The Academy doesn't reward talent anymore, they just nominate people that they like (i.e. Hollywood darlings). Jim Carrey is a comedian who has been in some low budget comedy films, so he doesn't fit the mold of what they deem as an appropriate nominee. We all know if he was a bit more of a respected actor he would have gotten the nomination, and probably would have won.
Well it was 1998, they made some poor Oscar choices that year (Shakespeare in Love best Picture?)

The birth certificate is merely a record of inventory. Why did hospitals begin taking footprints of newborns? It wasn't done to give the parents a memento of the occasion. The footprint is taken to legally prove that child's foot never touched land, because if it had, said child would be a Sovereign, Free Being.
The footprint means that child became an asset of its country's corporation; a slave, such as in the United States of America (government) Corporation.
It has been this way since 1871 *at least* . Knowledge truly IS Power.

I love when it's all over and everybody cheers and laughs and cries, and one of the viewers is like, "What else is on?".
It is such a fitting ending.
When I first saw the ending, I hated it. I wanted to see a court trial where Truman gets his justice, I wanted to see him reunited with his love, all of it.
But after a second rewatch, I realized how perfect the ending was. How we, the viewers, watch every preconceived notion a man has about his reality crumble before him. And for them, it was just another click of a button, and their lives carried on.
This is why I’m in the camp of people that are more scared of fame than desiring of it. Once you have it, your humanity belongs to the public, not yourself.

Yes when I was younger I wanted to be famous so bad and then I grew up and saw what social media stars go through and I’m like no thanks I like my private life I couldn’t handle all that hate and pressure they put on celebrities it’s destroyed some people

This is too real. In 2008, here in Brazil, a man kept his ex-girlfriend hostage in her house for over 100 hours. While the police was on the case, the hostess of a sensationalist afternoon tv show managed to get the man's number and called him, while he was aiming his gun at the girl's head. The journalist only made trivial and unethic questions for the sake of live tv. At the end, the man killed the girl. I think it's the most cruel episode of brazilian media, the closest we got to Truman so far.
That's so horrible! Has the journalist faced any consequences?
@@elenapopovic2527 I believe she hasn't. She wasn't the only one exploiting the situation, but she was the one who crossed the line. She never had a good reputation, and after that it got worse. Most people blame her for the fate of the girl.

This makes me terrified for the children of family vloggers. Like the Truman show, every moment of their childhood’s on social media. Puberty’s gonna be interesting for them...
Some of them probably commit suicide, knowing that they where made by their parents only to be a cash cow.
Most of the vloggers that are showing their kids off will probably not be around internet wise by the time their kids become preteens.

@Matshidiso Sekgampu in my country we have communities that have an aggressive culture or addiction cultures that just seems natural to them. A study of their history shows they were exposes for a prolonged period of time to stressors and coping strategies that produced aggression issues and addiction that when these became apparent it was so wide scale it started being seen as part of their culture with normalising statements going around like, "we [insert tribe community] are hard, you don't mess with us" and now the whole nation is trying to heal an entire culture.
When these kids become adults it will be normalised to have those disorders and everyone will be automatically considered mentally ill so that otherwise would be odd and seen as wrong.
And we are starting to see it with Millennials and some Gen Xers where you see nowadays we have hardline stances and have completely dehumanised and villified the other side. A good example is the way the Democrats and Republicans in the US now verging on blind hate of each other. We grew up being so exposed to why we are right and the others are wrong along with things line social media giving is "socialites" that eloquently Stoke hate to the point that even if we should be able to understand we are not the standard, we refuse to understand that we are not the standards.

I know, and the town is known as Seahaven, or more aptly, "C Haven"= Christof's Haven. And to add to the mentality that everything is Christof's creation, there's a map of the world behind him during his introduction, further cementing him as the "God" of this universe. 🌌🌍

The point of this video isn't to "drag" any specific person but instead to highlight how modern society has built an entire culture around exploiting ourselves and our lives. Why do people end up trying to be famous? Because society tells us that there are benefits to it. If society made it clear how stressful and limiting those lives often are, they wouldn't seem so appealing but instead they focus on the glamourous trappings of fame. Boiling this video down to just the Take making fun of CZcamsrs and bloggers is missing the point. Those people are just one part of a much bigger societal problem.
You are showing no empathy for people just like the video says. Dehumanizing these CZcamsrs and "fake celebrities" who, yea, might be playing roles but it's what people want to see and they "buy" it. CZcamsrs are still people.

A woman named Myka Stauffer and her husband started CZcams channels focusing on the adoption of a mentally disabled/autistic 2year old from China. They recorded everything. They recorded him and their other children nonstop. They gained thousands of viewers based mainly on this adoption and this little boy’s life. After two or three years they “rehomed” (their word) him because it got to be too hard and they had already gotten their clout. Absolutely heart breaking and sickening.
It sounded unreal yet I just went to see her channel and it's real! WTF 😖

The greatest crime done to this film is Jim Carrey's Oscar snub not even nominated yet an amazing performance in a timeless film
The movie itself was not the type that would be Oscar worthy. It was kind of campy. But Carrey's performance did, indeed, end up being Oscar worthy but the Academy doesn't operate like that, unfortunately. My Cousin Vinnie was one of the few exceptions.
Sometimes I'm scared that I'll have a normal life and never be famous or special. But the truman show really just shows how undesirable it really is to have fame.
I disdain fame, but I crave the financial fortune that usually comes with it.

@Lisa Shetler They cared about Truman the character, but not Truman the person. After all, even the most famous and influential people in the world are still people, and sometimes their character (personality, ideas, style etc.) is mistaken, or conflated with their humanity (faults, actions, vulnerabilities etc.), which, depending on the circumstances, can do some serious damage to their lives. Whether the show was good or not in-universe, the fact of the matter is that a man was unknowingly recorded and watched everyday of his life since birth and everyone he knew and loved were paid actors. Nothing about his life was honest and genuine, and people like Sylvia knew that and wanted to put a stop to it. She, and others of the "Free Truman" group, actually cared about him as a person, while everyone else was complacent in watching him as a character.
The Truman Show is literally the statement of what any first year undergrad course in sociology will tell you. People play the roles they are taught and given from birth, and these roles are an endles series of overlapping roles of expectation, habit, control, and reward/punishment. It is undoubtedly true, the few real individuals among us break out of the Matrix.
I always think about the movie’s ending whenever there’s new CZcams drama. A lot of us get engrossed in it but at the end of the day no one really cares outside of it being mildly entertaining.

I have seen interviews where stars say stuf about those magazines and are shocked how they can print stuff that not ture but the public who read think it while others just see and be like just another read to kill time. it like unless it a real site or legit interview and they say stuff gotta just skip the trash mags and live life.
I think theres something sad about the people who actually read them like why do you need to dig into someone else's life like you dont have your own and only the negative shit at that.

I almost feel as though there's increasing pressure for everyone to document their lives online in order to fit into society. For one, having a social media account and actively consuming content is often necessary in order to keep up with current trends in culture and maintain your social circle. There's also a certain stigma against not having a social media account-- it's like you don't really exist if there's no proof of your existence online. I used to not update my accounts, and those who would follow me would always ask why. Combined with recent events, the pandemic forcing most social interaction to take place online through social media, and the discourse that people have an obligation to state their beliefs online in order to maintain a certain level of morality, and it looks as though we're transitioning to a culture where our lives, opinions, & values are going to be even more open for observation. Does this make sense?
It does make sense. I remember going out to a college event in 2016 and hanging out with a bunch of people. One of them asked me where she could find me, and I said that I only had Twitter and Facebook. She asked about my other social media accounts, and I didn't have more at the time (or now, for that matter). Then she looked at me like, "What is wrong with you? Where am I going to find you?" I get it, social media helps us connect to different people and find and maintain relationships that we probably wouldn't have otherwise, but I am not the sort of person who likes sharing his entire life online, and I think that neither I nor anyone else should be expected to.
Yeah I got instagram for the same reason about a year ago, I just felt like it was the easiest way to keep up with the culture and stay connected. However, I'm private, I don't really post that often and don't really feel the pressure to. I do think in the current world, it's basically necessary to have a social media account, but that's a far cry from literally broadcasting your life for the public.
Very insightful and I can totally relate as someone who doesn't use social media. Popular culture is now synonymous with internet /social media culture, so it is impossible to be up on pop culture without being constantly interacting with others online.
I very much agree. It scares me, because I don't *want* to have all the responsibility of always posting online, presenting my best self all the time and constantly checking on (being pushed into) news updates, constantly being connected to the world. But society expects it. I miss important university information if I don't check Facebook and if I don't read emails. Every company and person has social media, and if you don't engage with your friends' posts, they'll be offended. It's inescapable unless you want to be a hermit.

Honestly looking back on the Truman Show makes me feel so bad for the kids on family vlog channels because it’s probably similar to how their going to grow up. But it’s worst for these kids because they have the added pressure of knowing ( once they’re older ) that their family’s income depends on them having a camera in their face and sharing important “family “ moments with the world. ( also I probably use the word their wrong so many times in this post so my bad lol )
I was thinking about this same thing the whole time! People are documenting their entire pregnancy, vlogging the birth, creating instagram profiles for newborn babies, etc. It's unsettling to me.
That's why i like Nekojitablog. They dont show their kid because they want him to make his own decision when he grows up.

I remember a post on Reddit about a teenager with a family trying to force the kids to be part of a reality show and the answers were a real shock because several other teens were giving "tips" based on their own experience with "influencer" relatives. If children starts are anything to based of, society is raising a whole generation of people that will be deeply screwed up once they grown up.
I like how they have these cute and fake versions of conspiracy channels to keep the masses lightly entertained by dire matters.

The difference between Truman and other reality stars, is that Truman didn't know he was being watched, whereas people in the real world actively try to get onto reality shows, and know full well what to expect.
This is one of the few movies meant to revolutionise the world.
It did it's job pretty well, the public saw it as a blueprint/instruction manual instead of a cautionary tale tho.

I remember reading an article on the director , Peter Weir , when this movie was about to come out and it said that he didn't have a tv , watch tv and he raised his children without tv . A great filmmaker . Also , Andrew Niccol wrote the screenplay . He wrote Gattaca as well and Gattaca is another story that is the near future .
I was OBSESSED with this film. Every shot and every line said is amazingly done. Peter Weir is such an underated director these days.

To this day, I still remember when I saw the Truman Show at the theater. It was brilliant and Peter Weir became my hero for the nuanced performance he got out of Jim Carrey. Still, what stands out all these years later was how I *FELT when I walked out of the theater.* I remember walking out and looking around me differently; wondering if I were being watched. Afterwards, while having dinner, a powerful discussion with my date happened about whether or not this type of thing could actually happen. We both agreed that if there was money to be made from it, that it would indeed happen. Isaiah felt that would ruin life as we know it. I thought he was being a bit too dramatic.
A few months later, the reality show Big Brother debuted. And Isaiah was proven right that it would ruin life as we knew it.
I owe that dude an apology.

It’s so weird. So many people choose to have a CZcams channel and post several times a day on Instagram and want to be broadcast. Couples filming when they move. When they eat dinner. And I just sit here and wonder WHY they do it. They could easily make videos in a different way, choosing a topic and sticking to that and make money. But instead they share every intimate moment. I think people who do that, just can’t sit with themselves. They can not be alone and don’t like their life. Why would you choose to tell the world about you and your partners sex life ? The crazy thing is that when you DON'T want to publicly live your life on social media and you tell people you don't have Facebook or Instagram, you're treated as if you're insane.
I think it's MY CHOICE if I want to be on Facebook or not. When I tell that to people, you would think I told them I decapitated puppies for a living!
Like, why are you so offended that somebody doesn't want to be on social media themselves, or doesn't it want to be in the pictures all over your social media?

D Same!! Every time I meet someone new, the first thing they HAVE to ask me is for my social media’s, and as they list each app one by one and my answer each time is that I don’t have it, they suddenly lose interest in even starting a friendship with me even if I ask if we could just exchange numbers instead. It’s insane, having social media is like having the all access pass to relationships with others at this point.

One person doesn't even want to be another person's friend because the other person doesn't have Instagram-- THEN, if you do happen to have Instagram or Snapchat, you're actually deemed to be less worthy of an overall person if you don't have a lot of followers!

When I told someone that I did not partake in facebook, twitter, etc... they took that to mean that I didn't have a phone, as if just using it for practical reasons like just communicating with someone via calling or texting (with admittedly some less practical uses such as CZcams or the occasional mobile game) was a concept they had never entertained before.
Counterpoint: I have met and almost dated 4 men who upon meeting me and taking me out, have said they have no social media. I took it at face value because I do know people who genuinely feel that way and choose not to engage. But all 4 men turned out to be in possession of profiles that I found out about and the reason they lied to me is because they were married or engaged already and were hoping to set me up as a side piece.
Prior to these experiences I never looked down on anyone who didnt have social media. But now I do when it's a straight man. Strong indicator of a cheater.
remind me of an experiment some artists did here. They built a glass house where an actress would live for a month trying to show how women are seen as a product. As you would expect from an experiment like this, people spent hours outside the house just watching her live her life, since everything was made of glass they watched her cook, shower, go to the bathroom, everything. Men spent the most time they could expectating "the show" just watching, entire families would stand outside watching her. It got to such a point that they had to cut the experiment short to only 2 weeks because the harassment was to much for her. They replaced her with an actor and the entire media presence, the audiences that would stand outside dissapeared.
Point made, and still ... the public: OBLIVIOUS to it all.

How's it going to end
This movie was so good. I was completely taken in and emotionally invested in Truman’s story. It’s crazy how relevant it is today.
You know, I quit Facebook and Instagram about a couple months ago, and I never felt mentally healthier in my life, since the arrival of social media on it. Had I stayed on social media this far, I would have had a mental breakdown, just like Truman.
I only use Instagram to look at pretty or cute pictures and to read some memes and jokes and I'll admit, with the new algorithm showing you proposed content once you reach the end of your feed, I spend a little too much time on it lately, but I get a lot of healthy laughs out of it and I'm cheerful when I close the app, so that can't be too bad a thing. I guess it's always about the way you use it. Should maybe add, tho, that I don't follow influencers but artists and two meme accounts, so there's no jealousy or other bad feelings involved. Just fun.
You just described me! I did the same, a few months ago, I was so consumed, anxious and stressed by it without even fully realising. After 10 years of being ruled by social media and letting it affect how I live in the real world, getting rid of it and not engaging in the fake online world was truly life-changing. I’ve never felt better

It’s amazing that I watched this movie as a child and understood the messages it was saying. My parents and brother thought the movie was stupid and made no sense.
I always wonder how people can be confident that they are picture perfect enough to be watched all the time and still be loved by those watching them. I certainly have many personal faults I need to work on that I wouldn’t want airing out, and so having to make content around this heavily flawed existence seems like a nightmare.
Dealing with being a very flawed person is a difficult battle enough on my own, just how much harder do I have to make it for myself by BROADCASTING that?

They focus ENTIRELY on the visible, commonly agreed upon flaws and on NONE of the invisible or disputable ones. They also have help from other people who would like to make money off of them too. It's quite doable if you compartmentalize everything ( but no way to live imho).
I think the assumption that people are confident just because they put their face out there is a misconception. In a lot of cases, it’s a case of fake it til you make it. I suspect that if we could poll many of these celebrities and influencers and get authentic answers, we’d see that the constant expectation of perfection actually results in very low self-esteem.
@@TknoelTellsStories very true. I've toyed with the idea of doing that for a living (ran a beauty blog back in the day before they were profitable and my friends and family really think I should do it for profit). Trust me, the insecurity is a big part of the reason I dont do it.
I think it's important to note that we all kind of fake or artificial in just about every public setting. We are all actors and performers, whether we're conscious of it or not. For example, a loose one, I was hanging out with one of my oldest friends watching a movie when her boyfriend at the time called. Her voice went up three octaves, her body position changed, she emphasized different words when she spoke and the second the call ended she looked at me and asked why I was staring at her, and she didn't even realize she changed. Hell, on Tuesday I helped my dad clean and when he asked me to carry an inflatable mattress up to the garage after I worked all day cleaning his storage unit, and when he walked away I pulled the corner of it, realized it was too heavy, and cried for about five minutes because I 'promised him' collected myself, he came back and I calmly said "that's the furthest I could get it, haha, too heavy." My point is, we all want to have a specific image, we all want to appear to be smart or funny or strong or friendly and we turn that picture-perfect image and then turn it back off. The only difference between celebrities and the socially screwed is how good we are at faking it and more importantly how long we are able to maintain the fake. I can't maintain my fakeness for more than a day, 15 hours tops, and five minutes crying to myself in my own weaknesses rejuvenate me for another like, 5 hours tops not including sleeping. and then there's recovery, which has thus far lasted a day and a half. I call it refilling my social battery, so please don't think they have anything special over you. They are deeply flawed, if not more flawed than you are, and any breakdown you see is their battery running low, and if someone doesn't look like they have a low battery, they're having it off-screen.

I so wish they’d make a sequel about Truman after he goes out the door. It could be every bit as deep as the first one, exploring what happens after you’ve awoken, and how you connect to the world.
Nice take! Back when I watched it in the cinema, it was a different time. No facebook, youtube or social media. There wasnt even big brother yet in my country and internet wasnt widespread. The movie to me was more about living your life for yourself and not let society dictate what your life should be. But now, i realize this movie is really way ahead of its time. Its message has now evolved to actually living your life and not putting on a show for monetization. The movie now seems more relevant than ever.

@@che55ie Perhaps, but the compulsion to share everything with everyone at any moment cheapens our own experiences and sometimes makes us lose all common sense or decency. There are multiple incidents where someone shares something gruesome or tragic like the death of a loved one because it's what they know, what they're used. It's not enough to just see something, we have to share something too.

One of them said that if it was him, he would have taken a picture and put it on Facebook. He seemed pretty down to earth and clearly wasn't seeking the limelight, so why would I do that to somebody who just wanted to live his life?

@@mrsejanoz523 She also tried to quit SMS but the wrestling company and Terrace House made her return to promote stuff. One of the cast member did say that during filming he was given "suggestions" of actions to take which means that the other members of the casts could have been given orders to do things for the cameras. So not only was she bullied but the people that were supposed to protect her betrayed her as well.

I’m reminded of How to Catch a Predator, as the seasons went they became less about catching predators and about entertainment. In the last investigation they did mess up because of the entertainment value, the cops became sloppy and misfiled or didn’t file paper works and all the predators they captured were freed. And the show was cancelled when they went to a predators house, I think some kind of politician and he killed himself.

Seeing it only TEN times, I’m way more than that, and it turns me into a blubbering mess of tears every single time! I don’t know exactly why, but I really buy into Truman’s sense of vulnerability in the face of being lied to by all the people he ever knew. I will likely never tire of watching this again and again! In my top 5 most enjoyed films ever, and for emotional reaction, THE BEST I have witnessed personally.
Great take. I've never understood people who willingly spend so much effort showcasing and editing and monetizing their experiences for other people's consumption. It makes so many parts of your life seem devalued, artificial, and performative. I can't imagine being okay with that loss of intimacy. I'm very protective over who has access to my own reality. It feels special and important that I'm the only person, in the history of the universe, that gets to witness my exact life. This intricate, unique, difficult, amazing perspective and series of events that only I get to really experience. I like hearing other's stories. I like recording memories. But using your life and its moments as promotional material that you constantly package and manipulate as a way to gain fame or make money seems horrible to me. How can you ever know what's fake and what's genuine about yourself? How can you truly be happy?
For some people living their lives this way is easy or easier access to money so they sacrifice their privacy for money and opportunities.

I was very naive when I was little. When we watched this in English class, the credits at the beginning made me think this was a real show and what I was watching was just a documentary about a once popular and creepy real show. What through me off and made me suspicious was the fact that no one on the island could sail a boat because the excuse was that they were all actors. In my head that didn't make sense. Yes, they were actors but they should of had at least someone on hand to could sail. My mind was weird like that. Extremely gullible, but smart enough to pick up on weirdness.
You know I stumbled on this and I learned a great lesson that actually brought me to tears.
The empathy and true connection I have experienced between humans when I was younger is such a hard thing to come by this day.
If we truly understood how dehumanizing the quarantines and lockdowns are. We would take the muzzles off.
But since we’ve been demoralized and dehumanized for the last 30-40 years by media.
Majority of people lack the empathy. The warm touch of another human being, the caring smiles, the minute body language.
We’ve allowed ourselves to become dehumanized. To the point where fellow human beings attack each other for not wearing a face diaper.

Can barely stand Jim Carey as it is, but this story is so out there, that after 20 minutes I needed to get back to real life (Yippee!)
I would love to see the Take do the same analysis videos they do for black and/or female characters for persons with disabilities as well. I know they aren't as large or media present minority as black or LGBT+ people, but that's why I think it would be good to raise awareness on their problems with stereotyping in movies and TV.
For instance, in mainstream movies the disables character usually ends the movie by dieing or being "cured". And they are very often playes by nondisabled actors and actresses. AND they are almost never allowed to be normal people, but either subjected to the viewers pity or admiration for "living a life with such terrible hardships".

The way that people live mirrors the way that is shown in TV because it tells them a better story that they can make it themselves in real life.

This movie just came to my mind today for some reason because it reminds me how we put our lives out there on youtube/facebook/instagram and they both had/have ads too. Like Truman, I want out of this fake world.
I believe the Truman show is all about overcoming our fears. Truman, like us all, lets his fears fence him in. It isn't till he faces his fears and then overcomes them that he is able to venture into the real world. Most of us let the fear of the unknown or imagined stop us from ever having the life we were meant to have.
Reality TV is edited. Truman's life is directed as a 24 hr show. There is a big difference. I think Truman's journey is much closer to Neo in The Matrix. At the end he exercises Self Agency and Radical Free Will by stepping through that door. I like "The Take"'s video about the Matrix and Matrix II, they are worth a watch, and apply it with a wide brush to this movie. That makes sense to me.
Truman's life is still edited though. Christoph still chose which cameras to cut to and when to cut away entirely. During the slower, "boring" parts like when Truman slept or when he stared off into nothing or during anything they might not want to show, they would cut to past footage, interviews, etc. That's all still editing, a deliberate choice of what to show and not show the audience.
There is NO difference. They're both pure fiction.
And of course there's the fact that Truman's life has been fabricated and scripted, much like a cheap and sleazy reality show. Just because conversations aren't dubiously edited doesn't mean they're any more real.
@ULGROTHA Probably not. Truman's journey is not one of self-discovery but of learning that the world around him is a lie. He never has any need to question or challenge his identity, but rather the identity of everyone else in his life.
