      Callum6355 On what basis? To be a great player you need to prove it against the best and on the highest level. He cost Man City the Wigan game. He cost England the Iceland game. He's never played in a quarter final of the champions league and part of a Spurs team who bottled it. Playing against Basel and the poor premier league sides when you have 80% possession isn't anything special about him. If he gets to play Vs Ronaldo/Marcelo, Iniesta/Alba and Ribery/Alaba and plays well then I'll come back here and agree with you. Or if he keeps Hazard quiet in the world cup group stage. Until then, he's overrated and unproven.

    They essentially all play different roles as midfielders so comparing them is stupid. If you want a player to pick out insane cross-field passes and dictate the tempo of the game then you go for Scholes. You want a box to box to turn defence to attack and take the game to the opposition you go for Gerrard and If you want an attack-minded midfielder who can win you games by scoring at any given moment you go for Lamps. Its all about preference as in their primes they were not similar players.

    • @mashwork6615
      @mashwork6615 Před 6 lety +6

      Technician the Producer Lampard was not an attacking midfielder. He played deep for Chelsea the same way Scholes did, but he would arrive late in the box to finish of moves that he started off. Not an attacking midfielder at all. He ended playing deeper for Chelsea when the likes of Ramires, mata and Hazard came and he was still quality and aged a lot better than Gerrard ever did. Lampard scores 15 goals at 34 years old playing in a 2 man midfield and we won the europa league

    • @OfficialTechnician
      @OfficialTechnician Před 6 lety +16

      There is a big difference in me saying attacking Midfielder and Attack MINDED. Attack-minded means his focus was always higher up the pitch and essentially in and around the opposition box. CR7 is essentially a winger but his attack-minded mentality means he almost plays as a second striker. Mata is currently United's Right winger but he drifts centrally due to him being a natural number 10. Positions don't usually mean much when a style of play has been ingrained into a player

      Why I think Gerrard is the best because he is the only one of the three who can produce all of the qualities that you mentioned. He scored bangers at the most crucial of times, he could also dictate a game with his passing and get an assist out of nothing from a 40 yard pass and like you said he’s box to box, can defend like a world class CDM and attack like a world class CAM. Gerrard is the only one who could do it all.

Great selection of midfielders though. I doubt we will see a midfield or england team that was abundantly packed with talent any close to that again. "Scholes is the best" proceeds to explain how the other two had more individual impact, followed by stating Gerrard is the most complete player and could do everything and lists how Scholes can't tackle. Picks Stevie G as his captain and goes a small ramble about him being the all time best Liverpool player because he did what he did without great players around him, unlike Kenny.. the initial reason behind him picking Scholes. Strange. This suggests that Scholes could do moments of magic behind the scenes, making a game tick over in a squad of superstars, while also falling short in defending. Whereas Steven Gerrard is a complete player who can also do that, yet also elevate his team, lead and drag them to success.

Gerrard was sought by some of the biggest clubs and its fair to say he would have gotten into any team and made a difference. There are reasons why some players list him as the best they've played against or with. Alonso has outright said Gerrard was better than him, a player who played alongside Xavi and Iniesta, who played for arguably the best international side in modern history and won the biggest trophies on the biggest stages. Gerrard was one in a thousand who stuck with a club despite their skill or potential, its what arguably made him even better for it. Look at LeTissier.
      I'm all for anyone saying Zidane was the best or one of, but to state that its 'by far' to another top top player with different assets - is a stretch.

    • @TwoAwesomeKids34
      @TwoAwesomeKids34 Před 3 lety

      @@mike_nelson no it's not Gerrard was class, but the argument that he could do everything is not a bonus as there was a better player than him in every position. The fact that xavi and Zidane were miles better is because theyre the two greatest of all time and they were that much better, not because Gerrard was bad. Zidane made everyone look stupid and xavi was untouchable with how he consistently provided assists. Gerrard could do both of these but not as good as others. He never really had a specific job. He's better than lampard easily, but scholars was better than him imo, because he was a different type of player. Gerrard could run at people and bang one in but there were lots of top players who could do this, where as scholes was someone who completely controlled games, something which very few players have been able to do, which is why he was vital to United success, his stats aren't as good as Gerrard's or lampards, but he played a massive part in every trophy United won, and unless Gerrard scored the winning goal, was something he was unable to do

    Just imagine if 4-3-3 formation had become the default or we had a progressive manager as opposed to sven goran-erikson. I believe he is the reason england never won anything, if we'd had had an English manager who played a 4-3-3 or a 3-5-2 then we definetely would of won either Euro 2004 or World cup 2006. After that they aged a bit and weren't as good anyway but 04 and 06 with the right tactis and manager we would have won.

We wouldn't have won WC 06 anyway when you think about it, would have been France in semis and Italy in final (nah we wouldn't have won both of them)..HOWEVER, what I really meant and what I say to people mates etc. Is that we would have won euro 2004 hands down playing the right system because Scholes would have been deep lying (in which he was THE BEST IN THE WORLD AT) in the midfield three instead of being on LEFT WING ffs! Would have also settled Gerrard and Lampard in front and sorted that out. Rooney cutting in from the left (arguably more dangerous with pace as well at the time) and that leaves Beckham a bit further up the pitch on the right with Owen up front. We would have been indestructible! Bit he had Scholes on left mid! It's criminal! An out of form Holland relatively off the pace from what I saw in the semis (who Portugal comfortably beat) and then Greece in the final!

      @@marshallbrennan370 Under the circumstances (Owen/Beckham injured, JT suspended, Rooney suspended/nowhere near fit) I'm with you, I don't think we would have stood a chance. However the lineup against Portugal, with Rooney on fire, maybe. Either way, should have beaten Portugal.
      10000% agreed that they would have won EURO 2004 (first time I watched football which is why that hurts the most) with a different formation, though imo they probably should have won it even playing 4-4-2😂To start with, Campbell's goal against Portugal. I also completely remember Holland being absolute shite in the knockout stages (after being a joy in the groups), so England probably would have taken them down even without Wayne. Same for Greece. Having said all that, I still feel the Czechs were the best team at that tournament and arguably not even a proper formation and Rooney might have been enough to stop them if they'd had Nedved (who's injury was just as big a tragedy as Rooney's)
      Not quite on board with your suggestion that Rooney would have been so destructive from the left. Where I have a little bit of sympathy here is that Owen and Beckham were woefully off form, but he couldn't drop the captain/icon/Real Madrid man nor the only Ballon d'or winner in god knows how many years. Maybe a kind of diamond with Beckham providing width on the right and Cole/Gerrard/Rooney on the left? Though, unlike in 2006, when Rooney got injured he replaced him with Vassell (or Heskey?), when he could have brought on Hargreaves or Joe Cole

    Didn't know Dyer was a Liverpool fan but still I'm surprised he picked Gerrard. As Dyer won no silverware in his career which is probably a big regret of his when you look at what many of his ex teammates won, he could've at least had a Euro2004 winner's medal if Gerrard hadn't had such a poor tournament.
    The first and last games of England's tournament were the most important games and both ended horribly, he lost us the France group game which cost us avoiding the hosts in the quarter-finals and in that quarter-final he went nowhere near making up for it, he had a quiet game so quiet he didn't complete it and we went out. Yes we were unlucky and probably robbed by the ref but that was the consequence of playing a host nation like Portugal in the first knockout round and Gerrard still had the ability to produce much better than he did but he didn't deliver as always for England, many other England campaigns he let us down. It became predictable during the latter stages and the managers were silly to keep picking him I'd say after the failed Euro2008 qualification so it shows how clueless they were to not only pick him for another 3 majors until he retired but give him the armband???? when he already proved vs Croatia at Wembley Nov2007 he couldn't be the inspirational captain we needed. I wasn't really expecting him to be either, but although I was pleased he missed WC2002 through injury because I knew we'd exceed expectations without him, 2004 & 2006 we did expect more from him to no avail.
