- Working in Affinity Designer’s Pixel Persona, digital lettering artist Ian Barnard demonstrates how to use his Freestyler Brush Pack to combine multiple lettering styles in a single piece with simple illustrations to tie it all together.
Freestyler by Ian Barnard contains a mixture of brushes including outline, 3D, flat, monoline, texture and pattern that allow you to create unique and impactful lettering styles with little effort.
As a bonus, Ian has provided a set of free sample brushes from his Freestyler brush pack to get you started, which you can download here: affin.co/FreestylerFC

Very nice creative session! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge!👍🌞
Thank you very much for the teachings, master.
Greetings from BRZ 🇧🇷
Brilliant 👍 Can't wait to try this out. Great walkthrough thank you for posting 🙏☕
Ian, this was excellent. Thank you :)
Wow! Amazing 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Looking forward to this
Thanks Monte. Hope you enjoy it!
For those that stumble across this video and say there's too much clicking, I think the iPad apps have gesture shortcuts that you can even customize further. I remember watching another Affinity Sessions video where the artist shows some gesture shortcuts for certain tools. I think it was in the one conducted by Robert Hansford titled: Comic cartoon illustration using vector tools or something like that.
For me it's more about all of the hiding and revealing panels constantly that wears me down. You're constantly looking for stuff... takes me out of the flow compared to the desktop version. I get that when screen space is at a premium everything has to be hidden but apps like Artstudio Pro do a good job at balancing whats on screen and what's hidden and it's a pretty robust app.
Excelente 🔥
Do you get the letter builder guide shown in this vid?
Enjoyed to follow your creative session, thank you! One question that occurs to my mind is, why using Affinity Designer while only drawing in Pixel Persona? Could you achieve the same in Affinity Photo? Just curious ...
Works great in Photo for me!
@@relliehunter yes, think so too. Was just wondering why using Developer without taking advantage of vector.
I'm just more family with using Designer over Photo. I would've loved to have a vector version of the brushes but I couldn't get the 3D and outline ones to work.
Great tutorial and idea for a cool logo. I have a question what tablet do you use?
It's an iPad.
You're better off spending a $100 to $250 on a 15" touchscreen display (in lieu of a wacom/huion tablet) to connect to your laptop/desktop, instead of dropping $1k on an overpriced tablet with less pen fidelity/power. Also, watching this without there being any shortcut buttons like any pen tablet/display would have (or even a BT keyboard for shortcuts) was quite painful. All those painfully slow repetitive tasks were like nails on a chalkboard.
@@LesterCovax Any recommendations for a decent quality touch screen display?
Very nice illustration.
Having watched all the way through, I'm struck by how much tedious clicking is involved in revealing and dismissing brush and layer panels. I wonder whether or not this could be mitigated by a rethink of the UI for the Affinity iPad apps.
Exactly what I was thinking! It's the main reason that I still do all of my work in Designer on the desktop, much faster and way less tedious. Plus the UI icons are too small and delicate. Serif needs to revisit and simplify the iPad experience.
Which model / Generation iPad are you using please?
I was just wondering if your brushes will work on PC for AD2, I seen you they were on sale on Affinity site, and wanted to give them a try, thanks
The brushes will work on Mac and Windows as well as iPad 👍
@Affinity. I bought this pack but can’t see the letter builder anywhere. Please advice thanks. The pack is great btw.
Hi, the lette rbuilder is a separate pack, link in the video description.
Does the letter builder brush? Come in the freestyle pack?
Hi, no it's a separate pack, link in the video description.
A Legend says that he will never move his left hand
It's a skill I've learned to master! 😂
Great!! Are you able to make your own Fonts or font packs using Freestyler?
Sure. That's sounds like a great idea to use them for.
What is freestyle?
Affinity looks great to me. I don't understand if this one for Ipad is not for android tablets. There are many cartoonists designers etc... who would like to have Affinity on your android tablet. In the future would it be possible?
Affnity me parece estupendo. No entiendo si esta para Ipad no está para las tabletas android. Hay muchos dibujantes diseñadores etc... que les gustaría tener Affinity en tu tableta android. En un futuro seria posible?
I just bought this pack but I don't see the letter builder brush anywhere. Am I missing it?
Buy the letter builder pack
@@kidschannel9917 He really should have mentioned that in the video instead of it being put in the description. It's kind of BS for an add-on demonstration to utilize anything but the base software or free resources. Imagine watching a tutorial video for a $25 product, to buy it and find out that a $2k plugin was used in said video (a bit of a hyperbole, I know, but I could easily see it happen with VFX software).
Question. Where did you get the letter builder? Thanks! I want to make sure I found the correct site because I can't find it as an add on.
Did you ever get an answer to this? I’ve been looking for a while.
@@kellenpowers link is in the video description :)
@@viviannevillanueva80 so it’s sold with the freestyle pack correct? I saw the over view of the pack but didn’t see it unless I’m missing something?
Nice
Is it easy to use this on a Mac not iPad?
We need tablet mode for windows please!!
Does this work on iPad
Yep. It's being shown on an iPad.
Could you project to a larger screen next time?
That oversight (hur hur) really bugged me. All they needed to do was zoom in with the overhead cam via the built-in optics, or just do it in post-production.
Due to how much this annoyed me, I'm sad to admit I took the time to measure how much video real-estate was wasted by showing the table and his hands instead of a crop to the screen. It ended up being a whopping 60% (of an hour long video on graphic design, mind you) that was taken up by pointless static background shaz...

Can I have the brushes for free?

It seems affinity is much cooler for apple
it is
Great creative session. As an engineer, it really bugs me that "TRY" is 3D down-left while "Fail" is 3D down-right. As a professional letterer, is that commonly done? I don't think I've ever seen such mixing done in hand lettering.
Creative license!
Im loosing interest in this program we havnt had any cool updates everything is bring update for mac and apple what about pc and tablet users ??
It's even worse for us Linux users 😢
You can draw these with the brushes available right? I'm trying to see why you would need to buy the brushes.
Hi, yes you can get a similar result with the brushes provided with Affinity Designer, this brush pack just gives you more options if you want them!
