So very fast drop for a paddle ride, nice to watch from the second scene perspective how large scale engineering works, as it gets clearly more a stable drop with the help of the jet than it would be on a paddling attempt.

It's crazy when it's sunny out the wave looks fun ! But if it's a little overcast it looks so different and scary. Lol either way I'd never surf there way to big , but those guys and girls who do it are awesome, love watching mavs, videos

I'm having trouble understanding the video. At 1:23 the subtitles says John Mel (his son, i assume) riding a big wave via tow in jet ski. Confused about exactly what's what, here. Which is which and where is who.
"John Mel" is meant to identify who's on the ski 👍
His son. (Also his Dad's name.)

What date did that occur?
Respect for the courage but I do not like the whole concept of towing. I know I'm in the minority here but a wave that can not be caught in paddling is not meant for surfing. The towing drives young people who risk their lives for social likes. It's quite far from the essence of surfing and has become like a circus freak show.
I'd rather see a wave ridden than just watch it go by. Tow in is legit as long as paddle in is held in higher regard.
Either way Mel has done more than most of us ever will....

You know, some old school Hawaiian could be sitting there and say I don't think boards with fins is really surfing, I mean you don't learn how to use your feet or balance or anything, never mind the offspring of the colonists appropriating your culture. Guess it's just a matter of perspective you old fart, where would we be with anything if we didn't adapt and try something more?

I ve been surfing since 1976. I have got some good big surf in my life, as Punta de Lobos, Chile. Nothing like that, of course. But I really dont appreciate this kind of surfing... For me, what turns me on is long perfect 6 foot barrel waves. Anyway...
