Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Well done Barry. Had just googled Fatty Goodlander and there uou were having had the good luck to catch an interview with Fatty
. By now your in Aus. I hope you have found some place great to hang out with some great Aussies. I just left there 5 months ago having arrived in Bunderberg Nov. 2018. Hung out there for 18 months while my partner worked so she could put some money by. I only tell you that story because it allowed me to get to know the Keyes Family. Lyle and Annie and his brother Athol and all their children. Amazing old school Aussies. Later on we sailed down to Tassie and got stuch there for the time of Covid. Was there for two years and met a bunch of lovely people there, even more so as I was single handing I hope you have managed some new mates and are swapping stories about past adventures. Good for the soul. I look forward to watching more of your stories in Aus...Best to ya mate...Kim Philley of SV Philiosophy now in Bali Indonesia
Wish we could have had a tour of FG's boat but ok well ... grateful for the visit.
It’s always a treat to see old Salts telling tales of the sea...
Hell ya! Fatty is a legend, love his writings.
Nice guy. Please to meet him and his wife.
A true OG!
Thanks for the fatty interview. He is a legend!
BRILLIANT, That was pretty funny 😄 hahaha 😂
U not just an old Seadog but u r also an awesome producer. Thanks.
You're a hoot Barry. A dern hoot. Love it every time!
Cheers
Wow Barry, you couldn't stop grinning with Fatty G talking your ear off. Good luck to you both, fair winds.
I always enjoyed reading Capt. Fatty's exploits. It was neat to see him in the flesh! Thanks Barry, you made my day!
Great episode Barry! Your filming and narrating are always so entertaining to watch. You're really good at it! Hope to meet you again in the South Pacific next year! Cheers Johan and Malin
You both, The Old Seadog and RAN are one of the best movie makers.
Another great channel but that is mostly land travel is the prsw100 channel... very good narrating and wonderful photography.
And for RVing, a good channel is Traveling Robert.. he also has a good narrating voice... he also does live stream Saturday nights around 5 or 6 p.m. Central Time .
What I like about all three of these gentleman is that they are down to earth and act like normal ,decent people..(which is actually kind of rare on CZcams as some of the people are in your face and over the top obnoxious also those are usually the people who have the typical CZcams music which is often irritating too...)
i love the outtakes
Never heard of him but he sounds entertaining.
Great job. Reading Fatty's book and hearing him talk are almost the same.
No kidding...I met them in The Caribbean, years ago, super accommodating people :)
Genius! All of it
Fatty..........legend! ⛵
The salt content on deck is higher than the water :)
Hi, I love your music choices in your episodes. I’d also like to thank you for your generosity in introducing other people you encounter or hang out with. It’s so much fun seeing who you meet. Thank you!
Fatty and his wife Carloline are so cool! Lol "I don't like sailing single handed cause I hate sailing with an idiot." Brilliant Fatty. Very cool Barry thanks for the interview. The bay of Panama still looks the same last time I saw it 36 years ago!
Even a faraday cage needs to be earthed.
Amazing. Meeting 'the legend' Goodlander.. read all his books .. great stuff !
Barry it's the lighting
Always good entertainment Barry thanks for sharing. Ant & Cid xx
Cheers.
😂😂really liked the music - started tapping to it🙃
We shared a nite about 6 months ago anchored in the Flats with Fatty and Caroline (unbeknownst to us) In the morning as we were motoring to go thru the canal, I recognized their boat, so we did a quick loop around Ganesh, made some small talk and were on our way. He's a very nice, friendly guy, with more knowledge and experience in his big toe than the majority of cruisers out there, but you'd never know it. One of the highlights of my life...
To see a short visit with you and Capt Fatty! What an unexpected treat!
Fatty is a cool sailor. Love your vids, too!
Nice one Barry, Thanks. :)
Thanks for s great episode!
thanks for showing us the flattering angle on the sloth there mate.. just what i needed as i was having a gulp of the good stuff
That guy owes me money!💸😎
Great video as usual Barry!
Another great episode. Just when I think it's over then the out takes, my favorite part.
Magnificent! What a treat for you and us. Two icons of this community in the same video... and you Seadog. 😉
Only joking.. Another great episode. `keep ‘em coming.. 👍
Great to see Fatty.....what a legend!
Another great episode. Cheers
Great video Barry and fantastic chat with Fatty Goodlander.
Just finished watching all of your videos on TV where you cannot comment or like. On computer today where both are possible. As I'm a 72 year old ex-sailor, just wanted to say thanks and may your winds be favorable and seas light.
Cheers Jim
Great episode reading one of Fatty's books now, he is the same as his writing!
Ha Ha Fatty is funny! I read one of his books! What a character!
Thumbs up Barry !!
Excellent!
That was great. I just began reading Fatty's third book actually
Good vid Barry.
Nice one Barry! Consider us part of your fan club. Always more fun to follow someone who you have actually met. :-)
Drop it in the water and make a timber one , easy to do , no rust , easy to paint , keep going
Another technique for those holes could be inspired from your friend zingaro where he drills the hole bigger and then fills it back up and then drills again to the right size.
Cheers mate the rum makes you red not the paneling cheers from Florida
Hope I can meet both of you someday!
Fatty changed my life as far as sailing goes.
Barry, your battle with rust makes me not want to get a steel boat. Now I'm looking harder at aluminium or fiberglass. Wood would be cool, but I think that is a lot of work too.
That poor sloth looked like Al Sharpton
I was told that when lightening hits your boat everything gets fried, boat being grounded or not. Electronics need to be disconnected like your friend did, but put in a place where the metal electronics are NOT touching metal on the boat.
Water! Drink!
Barry the celebrity. lookalike - at 7m15 you look just like Patrick Stewart!
Captain Fattys boat is a Wauquiez Amphitrite, I love the layout but I hear that they sail like a bus
Barry, the reason you are looking 'red" in the boat is because you are drinking to much :).
No, actually it is because the interior lighting (and the wood) shift the color balance towards the red side. You can compensate for this in the camera settings on your Panasonic camera. Look in the manual for setting the "White Balance". (It's page 75 in the manual I found online). I didn't see anything about adjusting the White Balance in the manual I found online for your Sony.
There is also some information (videos) on the web about changing the white balance of your scenes in the Final Cut editing program. When you get somewhere with high speed internet, you may want to do a web search for "Final Cut Pro and White Balance". A number of videos on the subject will show up in the search results. Even if your Sony can't adjust the White Balance in camera, you should be able to do it in Final Cut.
Would you buy another in steel? If so would a built-in stick welder be in order so you could refabricate as you go along..
James Bond 007
do you plan to sandblast the deck someday and painting it again?
Would you buy another steel boat ? Every construction method has its problems .
so you ment the man of the sea
Do you lock the boat up when you leave ? Just curious because I saw the sliding doors at the entrance ?
a three toed sloth
Old Seadog is funnier ;)
You need a grinder and welder not filler on metal. That area will be just as rusty in a few weeks. Why not make a GRP or Teak anchor locker cover?
Cant use a grinder on a boat without tenting and air filtering. Metal filings and dust destroy paint work instantly and can cause thousands in damage to my and others boats.
‘White balance’ to fix colour problem
Make the front cover from carbon fiber next time
Barry, if you had a choice, would you prefer an Amel 50 monohull or a Leapord 50 catamaran?
kmurray96 I bet you the Amel. At least I would !
I think he, or Nutshell, liked the Wynn's cat, Curiosity. Me? I'm not french, so I don't believe you need the crap in your face to make you a sailor. BUT, the Amel is a french boat, so go figure. I do like that dry helm.
Stop complaining Barry :) Steel is a dream to fix compared to my fiberglass osmosis/core/ rot issues. Quick scrape, acid, fill, prime, paint. And thats you done. Try cutting, replacing core(always bigger than we think) finding new core, epoxy, more epoxy, fairing sanding, fairing, sanding, more glass, sanding, more glass and then hoping it will last. Not even a sweat for you, and rock solid. Steel boats are easy work. Did you know a study was done on steel boats regarding lightning? You live in a fariday cage already and don't need to add copper lightning strapps like the rest of us. When lightning hits a steel hull, energy goes around it and not through it. Safest place to be in a storm. Still complaining :)
Red Face & Nose - Alcohol ;-)
or just English :)
And a he'll of a lot a sun
how could you tell that the sloth was asleep?
it was snoring :-)
Is that the way English say Sloth? Like Aluminum
alphasxsignal Australia is sloth rather slowth as well.
I enjoy your video's, some thing that may come in handy for you in a rusty yacht is a rotary blaster that fits into a drill, it has tungsten tips that blasts away rust, you can get them from www.meridianzero.co.uk they did a article in practical boat owner, it may help you sort the on going maintenance. Michael F.
Michael F
WOW never seen before! also found rotatingblasterdisc.com
Another CZcamsr, JeffreyHK, works on a cargo ship and did a video on how they maintain the steel. They use a tool called a needle scaler. Usually air, but also available as an electric tool or an attachment. Details here: czcams.com/video/dtbLLBDfXY4/video.html
Michael F Searched their WHOLE site and couldn't find what you're trying to refer here??
Robert Rudolph : Me neither but a google search refined by photos will show you some good stuff.
Mister Professor : Needle scaler may be effective for paint but is not very effective at all for rust. The video does show some hard core tools that ARE effective on rust. Compacted rust is harder than regular steel and requires an extra-ordinary amount of power to remove it. Burning it off with an arc welder is also very effective.
Barry, you should look into the CRS products at the attached link. I have no affiliation with Maxon but I did sell these products in a prior sales position. It's pretty amazing stuff. It penetrates the steel to stop oxidation. www.maxontechnologies.com/
Try using butyl tape.
to help seal the holes around screws and bolts. :-)
Great stuff isn't it.
Rust even sleeps
Canny Neil Young album 😴
Half the video is watching people dinghy to get some fuel jugs filled. Wow.. Just wow.
Thats the point
Cap'n Fatty was on Delos and talked for like three hours. Never shuts up.
Dude, stop trying to deny your redness. You are fried. Put on sunscreen. Now.
Tim Lamarre he’s Caucasian, when you get older the redness is quite likely, sun or not.
