  • Sailing out of Panama City to the island of Toboga. I spend the night in the loudest bay in the World with a bunch of party hard boaters. Time to say goodbye to friends and clean my bottom (of the boat that is!)

Thanks so much for your support,
    The adventure continues.
    Safe sailing.
    Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
    The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
    Underwater video Gopro3plus.
    Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
    Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
    Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

One time I was in White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, BVI and I was the only sailboat anchored on the East side of this humongous anchorage. This guy came in and anchored right next to me and started playing loud rock music. Remembering the old movies about Chinese and Vietnamese sound torture, I played a CD with my favorite Bethoven's Symphony very loud about 3 times until the guy lifted his anchor and moved his sailboat to the West side. This would not have worked in Panama with so many boats but it serves as a notification that you are not the only old grudge in the world. And don't worry, crocs do not eat old people with tough skin and dry meat. Talking from experience.

Your adventure is fantastic. I follow you now for almost a year. As the owner of also a steel (dutch) yacht I have some experience with rust. Maybe I may give you two hints. The hinges you use for the achorage storage looks like stainless steel. You can prevent rust by putting a piece of rubber (shoe sole or whatever) between the hinge and the deck. Stainless steel eats the ordinary steel out. As for the solar regulators I would keep two. Then you have redundancy and more possibilities in case of a failure. Keep up the good work and let us enjoy your adventure and good filming. Arie van den Ende (NL)

Having loud music on boats and cars is a sport in Puerto Rico. Any popular anchorage is torture until night falls, because they are all day cruisers. Entering marinas is like a mating call for them and you can't do anything better than be amused because there really is nothing to do about it. Regaeton is what they most play and that music deifnitely transports you because you just got to get out of there when it's playing.

Barry, have you considered putting an Xantrex Echo Charger ( About $100 US) between your house bank and your starter battery? That way you can run all your charging units - solar and alternator etc - to your house bank and whenever the echo charger senses the house bank voltage above 13 volts it charges the starter battery. You may not need a new charge controller then. At all times it keeps the battery banks separated. I have used this system for 16 years find it simple and effective. Best of luck and keep up the good sailing and video making!

    No rust! Great stuff!
    Why not distill water?
Distilled water is great for washing rust. Salt free metal won't rust when wet with distilled water.
Distilled water is great for drinking.
Discard a bit of product at the beginning of the process (contains non water voc) (or save for use as rust cleaner)
Stop the distillation before it boils down to nothing (other non water voc)
Met any cruisers out there distilling water?

From one old fart to another the satisfying part about those “youngsters” is that some of them won’t live to be much older. Those that do live to be older will wonder how they got lucky enough to be called “old”.

    • @afrog2666
      @afrog2666 Před 4 lety +2

"good thing young people who party might DIE so cranky old farts can be left alone"
GREAT! That way they won`t become like YOU either..
Hoping people will die so YOU can have silence, that`s just disgusting and pathetic.
Best thing about the ocean is that you can go wherever you want, but just because you`re old doesn`t mean you decide what goes on wherever you go..
I`m not a fan of partying kids either, but at least at sea you can remove yourself from the equation, unlike living in a city where people shout and scream all the time around where you live..
Anyway, I took ONE look at that place and knew people would party there.
Guess what? Don`t like loud music? Don`t go to places packed with young people ;)
Meanwhile in Oslo, Norway, it`s saturday and my noise cancelling headphones are charged and ready..

Howdy mate, remember if you let a battery get below about 20% charge you will f**k it. Also, good idea not to skimp on the quality of solar panel regulators and instruments. When your batteries are flat because you failed to properly recharge or monitor them and a storm hits or you have prolonged inclement weather, you’re going to be screwed - as no doubt you already know. Cleaning under your hull with a feather would have the same effect as that brush, wouldn’t it? I enjoy your videos buddy. Good onya!
