I was in the market for a semi-auto 22WMR rifle as an upgrade to my Little Badger and this one channel managed to cover literally every gun I looked at and every question I had. Extremely detailed reviews.
Ain't no way I'd buy a gun that specifies you have to use a certain brand of ammo. The CZ 512 uses them all and 100% reliable!! The Keltek PMR 30 came out with that when they had their fluted barrel...only use CCI ...and I waited until they solved their problems to buy one and it now shoots them all with very good reliability.
You are correct... when using any autoloader the charging handle/bolt should ALWAYS be left "fly" and never "rode" home. You do fantastic and very thorough reviews... I always enjoy them. You presentations are done in a very professional and knowledgeable manner. You've just earned a new subscriber sir!
Thanks for the video just had my 93 F 22WMR out this afternoon and the first round did not fire with it then I see this. LOL I want the B 22WMR FV looks like a great rifle.
Just remember one thing about CCI ammo. They do not make duds like Winchester or Aguila does. The Win.dynatrash ammo is pointless and good to know ahead of time in this well done video.😎👍
I wonder Mike, did Savage make any changes or upgrades to this model rifle since you did this review? It is now March 2019, so you can see my reason for the inquiry , I watched this review some time ago, but this proves that like a good movie,..it does benefit the viewer to watch a good review again. I picked up on a couple of points that I missed the first time I watched. I'll now watch 'velocity and Boyd's stock video.
First 3 characters of the lot numbers of the recalled ammo are 1WN or 1XA. Its stamped on one of the end flaps of the 50 rnd. box. I had a box of this bad stuff a few years back. I pulled the bullets. Dumped the powder. And shot wax plugs out of a 22 mag revolver using just the primer. Worked good!
I've been thinking about one of these rifles. I had a cz semi auto 22wmr and it was great from the bench but had a very heavy trigger with no real cure that I just didn't want to deal with. I watched both videos on this and think you did a great job on the videos. A lot of people don't take the time to bench rest with sand bags and all that and it's the only way to do this and do it right. Since there was no link in the video I assume you haven't did the stock upgrade so i'm interested in seeing that. Thanks for the video!
I gave this video a thumbs up. It was informative and well done. However there are one or two things missing. Unless I missed it, you did not say how far away the targets were. I am hoping at least 50 yards or 100. The groups seemed pretty tight for 100 yards unless you are a fantastic marksman. It may outside the scope of this review but since the .22 magnum is often used for hunting it would be great to see how these bullets expand, again at 50 or 100 yards. Thanks again. I will check your other videos; perhaps my questions have been answered elsewhere.
Shot my A17 for 1st time today. 150 rounds of of the CciA17 ammo and another Cci 17hmr ammo. Had 3 or 4 strikes on primer with no fire and had several stove pipes. The guy next to me at range had same rifle and was telling me he had same issues. Also had 3 or 4 magazine fails to rotate next round into rifle. I'll focus on the 5 points next time and really look at how I place magazine in rifle looking for the proper seating. Otherwise this gun is super accurate at 50 yrds.
Late to the party! Excellent video, precise procedure! How is the rifle holding up? Any issues? Debating A17 or A22? Thank you in advance, hope to hear back soon. Subb'd & Liked !!
Still, six years later, a great review. Just a question (because I do not know), the box of Winchesters that would not cycle, I noticed that it was the only box that did not have WMR on it. Would that have any relevance?
I wouldn't mind trying one of these in 17 hmr. Only thing is, 17 hmr isn't legal in semi auto on this side of the pond (I have it in the Browning T Bolt). It wasn't around when the latest batch of wacky gun laws were drawn up over here (Northern Ireland). You can get a semi auto 357 handgun,12 gauge or 22 rimfire, but not a 17 hmr.. Go figure..! I'm interested in 22 wmr though. It is semi auto legal here, but nobody seems to use it. I saw a video of a guy who glass bedded an A17 with a fancy stock and got pretty good results.. Great video by the way.
the A17 Boyds stock fit the A22 Perfect, got a pepper Feather weight thumbhole on my A22, the only issue I have is the new Butler creek 25rd A17 mag does not cycle the 22 WMR right so far, it fired 3 rds and then jammed in the mag
Good to here. I am going to put a Boyd's stock on this week. What rounds were you trying in the A17 mag? I noticed the 40 grain rounds jamming up but the 30 grain Hornaday's seem go go in smoothly. I was hoping to experiment with different rounds to see if I could find one or two that might work in the magazine.vI'll play with that next week.
I saw a youtube with A22 Thumb stock. He used Buttler Creek. What I night mare! Almost every round jammed and he tried 5 ammos. He went back to a factory mag. He did not know how to load the factory magazine. Another youtuber through away his factory mag and loves butler creek WTF is wrong with Savage? Why don’t they admit Ruger has the best magazines!
A well done review making sure to include a variety of ammo's. But, I think that testing accuracy at 25 yds is a bit conservative in determining overall accuracy of these rounds.
Thanks for the link. Keep up the good work. I love this kind of stuff. BTW I have a friend that has the A17 mag. I shot a few rounds thru it...it's a tack driver. Thought that was only at 50 yards. Nice little rifle.
The reason the Winchester Dynapoints did not cycle might be the size of the bullet. I had 2050 22 LR Dynapoints that did the same thing in my old Remington 550-1 autoloader and I found the bullets were .225"-.228". That Remington would normally shoot anything. I called Winchester and they had me send all of them back to them right away and in 2 weeks they returned 2500 new LR shell and they were .222 "to .223" and they work fine.
I do not have the A17. The 17HMR is flatter shooting but I think the A17 and A22 are proving to be reliable and accurate. The A22 has more energy at closer ranges and the 17hmr has the advantage at ranges more than 100 yards. Most think the 17 to be the more accurate round.
That is this week. I am going to put the Boyd's A17 stock on the A22, test the A17 25 round magazine AND do velocity test on some 30, 35, 45, and 50 grain rounds. These will be the topics I cover this week.
I have tried several different brands of ammunition in my Ruger M 77/22 VBZ .22 mag and found the Winchester .22 Dynapoint to produce horrrid accuracy as well . However the accuracy of the Savage A 22 at 25 yds is not impressive , this should be the accuracy expected at 25 yds off hand not from a sandbagged rest from the bench .
The refired round didn't eject, it fired finally. But you have the gun down in the pad clost to touching the bolt handle. No hold open, even my Rossi has hold open on last shot. Snaping a firing pin on the empty chamber is a no- no. Rossi also has a better mag, curved to prevent rim interference load N shoot. Dyna points don't work in autos.
my local walmart has a A22 with a wood thumbhole stock for $360. I really like it and want to buy it but I can't stand un-reliable rifles. Seems like some reviews say a22 works fine and others have feeding issues. Did you do anything special to yours to make it function well? I would welcome advice from any other owners. Thanks
It seems solid. I hope the .22lr version is a good gun. I don't get on with 10/22 bolt hold / release. I don't want to go tacticool for me first .22lr semi.
I have not tried the 22lr version of this rifle so I can't say from personal experience, but the 22 WMR is much harder to engineer to run correctly so I would suspect the Savage in 22lr should be good.
Their apparent size appeals too. I find myself wrapping my myself around standard 10/22's. I am a bit awkward I like something to hold onto. Thanks for replying.
I just bought The Savage A22 magnum. Now I read all these bad feed issues. What brand and type of ammo are you using. It is hard to find A22 ammo. Will CCI maxi mags work? CCI TNT mags? What works?
Nice review I will stick with my Rossi 72(.22 magnum) with pistol scope. It shoots the best with armscor ammo. fastest and smallest group size. I like a pump action locked breach.
I sent you a message with my personal email so if you reply via an email where I can attach and send it to you. you will get a photo of my remington 512 with the 16 and a quarter inch barrel.
The A22: Has one of the hardest clips to feed in the rim fire industry, these same clips are hard to get in the gun, and to stay in place during normal operation. 60% of the guns tested would not reliably cycle using anything but the high speed ammunition, also after the safety was taken off (Fire position) the action would not cycle. Last but not least, four (4) out of 50 rounds would not fire because of a poor (Very Faint) firing pin dent. My pest control company weighted for the A22 release with high hopes that it would work as well as the bolt auction 22WMR rifle. We purchased three to test before we purchased 17-more. The A22 failed, we sold the three at auctions, and are now testing the CZ-USA 512.
Mine works well if you follow the 5 recommendations. As far as loading the mags, I go over that in detail. Once you realize the construction of the mag follower it is easy to load.
Yes, I thought that statement in the owner's manual was "different". I have to say that reliability has been perfect with 11 different rounds so far. In the next review I did get excited after the Boyd's stock issue was ironed out and did do a string of fairly quick follow up shots, way too fast for the chronograph and the rifle functioned fine. Certainly easier to keep your sight picture than bolt or leaver even if you have to pause for a split second. I think by the time you confirm your target this rifle will be ready to fire again. Look at the string of fire after I fix the Boyd's stock and see if that is fast enough...czcams.com/video/ROHaBaYt6hs/video.html
You did your testing at 25 yards, I bet if you test at 100 yards the bullet trajectories between the light to heavy rounds would be significant. I would bet that you get 5" or greater in bullet drop with the 50grain bullets vs the 40 grain or 30 grain bullets. at 100 yards I would check this prior to hunting fer sure!
I have that gun just bought it last week I liked the gun only thing I do not like is the Crip the 10 round Crip I do not like it because it's hard to load
I've had my stock a few years so I am not sure. I like them in 22lr with a bolt gun because they are very quiet with a suppressor. I have not looked for them for a while. I stocked up when the priced were normal. They do not cycle a lot of semi autos, but in a bolt gun...czcams.com/video/2ZJHvCgLFZo/video.html
Yes they are... They are basically like a hot 22lr for use in a 22mag. Most 22lr autoloaders experience the same problems when firing 22 long and 22 short rounds. They are all slow velocity wise and don't generate the required recoil energy to completely and fully cycle the action. This is the reason they don't work well in autoloader 22mags. They are for primarily for plinking and squirrel hunting because they cause less meat damage. I have several boxes of them and would only use them in bolt, lever or pump action rifles. Accuracy typically isn't the greatest from my experience with them.
Well I think the recommendations make sense. It's not a military weapon. It's a lower cost varmint gun. Follow the recommendations and all should be good in the hood.
For the life of me and my 60 yrs I cannot figure wht all these gun company's stopped putting iron sights on there rifles. I won't buy one without period .
Nope. Seymore is right. At least with the LR version which is a PITA. My A22 in LR trigger is awful, gritty even at the lightest pull. Seems accurate, but with that trigger so bad it's ability is hard to judge. Waiting for the Butler Creek 25 round mag. The gun misfires. Strangely the firing pin is the same length as the bolt, has no return spring, so must rely on inertia to set it back so it can be struck by the hammer.
@@MichaelBellmbell556 Yeah, I know. Rimfire guns can sustain damage to the firing pin, because with no cartridge in the chamber, the firing pin can and does hit the edge of the chamber.
Got the A22 to kill wild hogs.It has been back to Savage twice and proved to be the absolute worst gun I have ever owned. Its hard for me to believe that some actually work well. They keep trying to fix it but its just a really bad gun. After one year my warranty is up and I will just be stuck with a 400 dollar piece of junk.If I had it to do over I would have got the CZ 512.It doesn't have to be shot in a "special " way just to work and the magazine wont be falling out.Savage engineers really bombed out on this one.
I'll just copy and paste my response from your post on the other video: The mag catch is a weak spot, but every time mine has fallen out I did not click it in. I have tried 12 different rounds with DynaPoint being the only one that would not fire in the A22 I have. The CZ shot all 12 different rounds but the DynaPoint accuracy was poor. Either you got a lemon or I just got lucky. Sorry to hear about your Savage's poor performance. Please follow up and let us know how savage takes care of it.
My A22 has been a total of 4.5 months at Savage in the last year. This time I sent it back they said it is not a functional gun. They said they would have to wait for me one to be built..Why the hell did they send it back to me the first time.Even if this abomination of a weapon works when I finally get one back it will be my last savage junk for sure. They are a lesser manufacturer for sure.
My new A22 is the most accurate single shot rifle I have ever owned. I really screwed up buying this one and I've owned many 22mags in my 70 years. Don't buy this one !
I don't like all the plastic. The rifle feels much better with the Boyd's stock. I personally don't mind magazines, and the factory mag works very well. This rifle has proved to be reliable with 11 different types of ammo. czcams.com/video/ROHaBaYt6hs/video.html
Like both reviews. But I think the guns a piece of junk. The first thing is going to happen is that plastic dust cover and retaining pin is going to break. And that trigger guard doesn't look like it could guard anything. Just can't understand how they could put such a nice barrel and receiver on a gun and then ruin it by using a bunch of flimsy plastic parts. I think I'll stick with my old bolt action Marlin. It's slow but accurate and it works in every single time
Kudos to Savage for developing a reliable and accurate semi-auto 22 mag. at a reasonable price. Many have tried, but most have failed.
I am working on the 25 round magazine. I think it can be made to be reliable. Test to follow.
very excellent reveiw, looking forward to more on this. Thank you Michael.
I was in the market for a semi-auto 22WMR rifle as an upgrade to my Little Badger and this one channel managed to cover literally every gun I looked at and every question I had. Extremely detailed reviews.

thank you for the review ... really well done. still working on a decision but this was a lot of help!

Thanks for this very informative video. Now, I know of some features on my A17 that I had overlooked. I guess it pays to read the instructions!
Thanks for watching!

Looking at the CZ 512 now. I'll do a field test next week with the same 12 rounds I tested in the A22.
Thanks for the video just had my 93 F 22WMR out this afternoon and the first round did not fire with it then I see this. LOL I want the B 22WMR FV looks like a great rifle.
Just got mine today along with 250 rounds of cci ammo. Cant wait to shoot it. Great review!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Mike for the tips.
Good review, thanks!
Thank you and Merry Christmas !
Very nice review
Great vid. Very informative.

The Win.dynatrash ammo is pointless and good to know ahead of time in this well done video.😎👍

great video! I recently purchased some of the Armscor .22wmr and they seem to be good ammo for the price.
I have some of their 22lr that works well.
awesome test
Thanks
A great review nice to know that the A22 Mag may need some attention to ammo.
Thanks for watching.
I wonder Mike, did Savage make any changes or upgrades to this model rifle since you did this review? It is now March 2019, so you can see my reason for the inquiry ,
I watched this review some time ago, but this proves that like a good movie,..it does benefit the viewer to watch a good review again. I picked up on a couple of points that I missed the first time I watched.
I'll now watch 'velocity and Boyd's stock video.
Thanks. I do not think there have been any significant changes.
Thanks.
I've been thinking about one of these rifles. I had a cz semi auto 22wmr and it was great from the bench but had a very heavy trigger with no real cure that I just didn't want to deal with. Thanks for watching. This was at 25 yards. I did a follow up video with 4 different 22WMR rifles at 100 yards.
That will be my next rifle. Thanks for the great review. By the way, Hornady is pronounced hor-na-dee, not hor-na-day. Good job sir.
Yes, I pronounce it incorrectly more often than not, but I do know it is dee and not day. I would never make it as an actor... :o)
I think I get it right more often in the CZ 512 videos.
Michael Bell You do a great job. I'm thinking about doing a video...Mossberg 817 vs Savage 93r17
Shot my A17 for 1st time today. 150 rounds of of the CciA17 ammo and another Cci 17hmr ammo.

There was a big 22 mag Dynapoint overload recall in the past. Check the lot number on the box.
Thanks. I'll check this out.

Really good test. Seems to be on par with the A17 so now it's on my list.
I wonder at what yardage the were fired at
i think he said 25 yards
The follow up video is at 100 yards. This test was at 25 yards.

That is this week. I am going to put the Boyd's A17 stock on the A22, test the A17 25 round magazine AND do velocity test on some 30, 35, 45, and 50 grain rounds. These will be the topics I cover this week.

Copy that. Re-looked at accuracy at 100 yards. Added the MR 1722M and CMR 30 to the mix.

Can you have iron sights added to the barrel? Nice review. Thanks
I am sure a good gunsmith could do that.

I believe you , they are junk IMO.
OK in a ruger american rimfire 17hmr are they OK or is a Savage 93 better both about the same price?
I'm .sorry, I do not have either in 17 HMR.
If you drop the magazine in mud, How would you clean the inners of the magazine? Can it be taken apart?
I would just blow it out with compressed air.
There's a shot at 13:15-13:20 gun goes bang... No ejection.... Gun goes bang again
That is just a result of the frame rate of my camera. The cases ejected.
What groups shoot best at 100 yards and what groups can you obtain?
Check out my video on the 100 yard comparison.
Very good video. One thing i would like to see is rapid fire. If you have to pause between shots for it to fully cycle ,then why have a semi auto.

Being the the old fuddy-duddy I am,and seeing the difficulty wither magazine I believe I'll just stick with my old Model 93.
No problem with that.
The charging handle looks like it's rubbing against the bag.
You did your testing at 25 yards, I bet if you test at 100 yards the bullet trajectories between the light to heavy rounds would be significant. I saw Buffalo test the CZ512 with 30 grain vs 40 grain 22 mag bullets and the 40 grain dropped 7" at 100 yards
My goodness, how long is that barrel
22"
I have that gun just bought it last week I liked the gun only thing I do not like is the Crip the 10 round Crip I do not like it because it's hard to load
I little different but easy to load when you get the hang of it. I tried to show that detail in the video.
Ibsuggest the 25 rd mag. . This 10 round rotary mag is a pain in the ass. To load
Can you get larger clips. If so, who makes them?
Not that I know about.
What height rings do you have on the a22 mag?
Too high but I needed to get clear of the iron sight. It is a B Square mount I had in the shop.
I would like to have the 17 but the cleaning on this firearm is tedious
I don't like cleaning my Ruger Mark2s either. But they are among my favorite pistols to shoot for fun.
Will a 18" barrel 17 hmr suffer in accuracy over a 22" barrel??
Velocity yes, but accuracy is more related to a barrel's quality than it's length.
steven Thompson umm no the best velocity is with a 16 to 18 inch barrel past that then it starts slowing down
Are those Dynapoint's still in production? I thought they quit making those years ago?
I love the 22LR in a bolt gun with a suppressor. They are VERY quiet.
One of my first videos

Is that a charging handle or did Savage decide to use up a few cases of unused 22lr magazines?????
You always have a spare magazine with you,,,,,,,,LOL
I would like to see this rifle with the laminated stock the A17 has not a fan of the synthetic stock
I put a Boyd's stock on it in another video. Check out my channel if you get a chance, and thanks for watching.
What was the make and model of the scope?
Cheap Simmons 22MAG
What is "Ride The Bolt"? Thanks BEST Regards Sir !
Not completely releasing the bolt and letting it fly forward.
BAD B
4:35
Tip #4
Pull bolt back until bolt stop is released, let bolt go ...
Well I think the recommendations make sense. It's not a military weapon. It's a lower cost varmint gun. Follow the recommendations and all should be good in the hood.
Thanks for watching!
For the life of me and my 60 yrs I cannot figure wht all these gun company's stopped putting iron sights on there rifles. I won't buy one without period .
Seems like a pain in the ass to load that magazine.
Not once you realize how the follower works.
You didn't say what range you were shooting at, 50 meters 100 meters?
Sorry, I thought I said that. It was 25 yards.
Bună seara cît costă o armă?
No carbine? No stainless? Savage needs to step it up.
Those would be nice options!
have you tried to pattern them at 100yrds?
Yes it is on my channel. Please feel free to browse and share.
You may improve your accuracy a little bit if you did not put your fingers of your left hand onto the barrel.
Thanks.
Rossi has come out with a "clone" of this rifle..
Interesting.
check 5 steps before firing. A flintlock is easier to ready.
HaHa. The big one is just make sure the mag is in position and locked up.
first round misfire bolt hit sand bag lite strike
That explains it. Thanks.
how far are the targets?
this test was only at 25 yds but here is a follow up at 100 yds with 20 other rifles added in the mix.....czcams.com/video/m2w7GMIjsOI/video.html
supposed to say 2 other NOT 20 other
What happened to the rule that you shouldn't dry-fire a rim-fire weapon?
Depends on the weapon.
@@MichaelBellmbell556 Yeah, I know. Rimfire guns can sustain damage to the firing pin, because with no cartridge in the chamber, the firing pin can and does hit the edge of the chamber.
@@timhallas4275 What I meant was some rimfires are designed to allow dry firing. 10/22s are fine to dry fire for example.
@@MichaelBellmbell556 How do they make it safe?
Looks like the bolt handle is hitting your bag.
Nope. It was clear.
the magazine looks to be a deal breaker for me
Ya. Their mags suck big time. Many are defective. Some times the rounds don't rise and then jam.
I'll just copy and paste my response from your post on the other video:
The mag catch is a weak spot, but every time mine has fallen out I did not click it in.
Dynapoint is the worst ammo I ever used in any gun
Yep The only good use I have found for it is suppressed in a bolt rifle. It stays subsonic and is very quiet.
Go for something better and less finicky, like a CZ512 or ZKM 611.
czcams.com/video/A8yOywwlLeo/video.html
I have a ZKM 611 and a CZ 512. I need to do a review of the ZKM 611, the CZ 512 I have already reviewed.
Good job, but stop with the meaningless 25 yard accuracy. The standard is ten rounds at a 100 yards.
Indeed. 25 yards is handgun distance for accuracy testing.
Save the $400 and buy a ax if your only siteing in at 25 yards. Lmao
My new A22 is the most accurate single shot rifle I have ever owned. I really screwed up buying this one and I've owned many 22mags in my 70 years. Don't buy this one !
I show every pull of the trigger.
This rifle is not for me to much plastic and loading a magazine is a pain
I don't like all the plastic. The rifle feels much better with the Boyd's stock. I personally don't mind magazines, and the factory mag works very well. This rifle has proved to be reliable with 11 different types of ammo. czcams.com/video/ROHaBaYt6hs/video.html
cz blows this rifle out of the water
czcams.com/video/A8yOywwlLeo/video.html
Like both reviews. But I think the guns a piece of junk. The first thing is going to happen is that plastic dust cover and retaining pin is going to break. And that trigger guard doesn't look like it could guard anything. Just can't understand how they could put such a nice barrel and receiver on a gun and then ruin it by using a bunch of flimsy plastic parts. I think I'll stick with my old bolt action Marlin. It's slow but accurate and it works in every single time
I agree that the barrel and receiver of this rifle deserve better "supporting parts".
I'll never buy that fire arm
That is why I post these videos so you can make your own informed decisions, Thanks for watching.
@@MichaelBellmbell556 Thanks
Yeah, not buying this Savage. Rossi is better.
